Sometimes actions speak louder than words, and there are various fictional characters across movies and television that prove this. In fact, some of these characters can convey and emote so much to the audience and win their hearts without uttering a single word.

Most often, there are instances where the character cannot speak because of who or what the character is (such as a baby or an inanimate object) so has to rely on actions and expressions to get the message across. Or sometimes, a character just chooses not to speak, which adds to the character’s personality or the atmosphere they’re creating. Regardless of why they do not speak, some of the best silent on-screen characters have ended up becoming some of the most iconic characters in mainstream culture today.

10 Oddjob (Goldfinger)

Over many years, the iconic British spy, James Bond, has faced a number of memorable adversaries and their formidable henchmen. Some of these foes have become standout characters in their own right and one example is Oddjob from the classic Bond movie, Goldfinger.

Although he is the henchman to the main villain, Auric Goldfinger, Oddjob has remained one of Bond’s most memorable villains to this day and is one of the reasons why many feel that Goldfinger is Sean Connery’s best Bond movie. In an excellent performance from Harold Sakata, as Oddjob is cool, intimidating, and commanding, and really proves a match for Bond — all without speaking a single line. Even though the movie was made in 1964, Oddjob remains a timeless movie villain.

9 Maggie Simpson (The Simpsons)

The Simpsons is, undoubtedly, one of the most famous cartoon families ever to grace the TV screen. Although a lot of its humor is down to laughable lines and catchphrases from the large cast, there is one character that remains unforgettable and that is baby Maggie Simpson.

As a baby, it is natural that Maggie cannot speak, especially as she is never seen without her signature pacifier in her mouth. Yet for an infant who is barely walking, Maggie has won the hearts of many audiences through her mischievous antics, quiet independence, and adorableness. It is perhaps because she doesn’t speak that one of the most heartwarming moments in the entire show is the final moments of the episode, “Lisa’s First Word.”

8 Tom & Jerry

One of the most famous cartoon duos is the slapstick cat and mouse team, Tom and Jerry. With 80 years of animated shorts, television series, and movies under their belts, Tom and Jerry continue to delight audiences of all generations.

Whilst there are some speaking characters, what helps make the Tom and Jerry shorts so brilliantly funny is that their antics are all action and no words. Both Tom and Jerry are very expressive with their emotions and body language, and the timing of the animated slapstick humor is spot on, which is more than enough to make the audience laugh. No words are even needed.

7 The Sandman (Rise Of The Guardians)

Nicknamed Sandy, the Sandman is the oldest of the Guardians in the DreamWork’s animated feature, Rise of the Guardians. Alongside rather big personalities, such as North and Pitch, Sandy still manages to stand out and become an extremely lovable character without even having to speak.

What makes Sandman different from other screen silent characters is that, along with body language and facial expressions, he communicates with sand. Images made of sand appear above or around him in order to convey what he wants to say or how he’s feeling, and the effect can be either funny or magically breathtaking. One rather noteworthy comic moment is how Sandy angrily rings one of North’s elves like a bell to get the attention of the other Guardians.

6 The Entire Cast Of The Artist

French film The Artist was one of the most talked-about and critically acclaimed movies of 2011, and it’s very understandable why. Telling the story of a fading silent movie star and a young rising actress, the movie lovingly pays homage to the silent movies of the 1920s. It is not only one of the best recent movies shot in black and white, but it also only has a single line of dialogue right at the end of the movie.

The entire movie is a masterpiece, and each member of the cast (even the dog) does a stellar job of moving and provoking character acting with just expression, emotions, and action. It’s no wonder it won five out of its 10 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.

5 Tinker Bell (Peter Pan)

When Peter Pan was first bought to the stage in 1904, fairy Tinker Bell was portrayed as simply a darting light and the sound of jingling bells. She has been portrayed countless times in movies and television since, but it is fair to say that the most memorable version of Tinker Bell is from the Disney animated classic.

Tinker Bell is easily one of the most expressive characters in the movie and yet she doesn’t speak a word. Her body language and emotions are big and bold — even turning physically red when angry — and she is always a scene-stealer whenever she’s on-screen. It’s somewhat a shame that she was given a voice in her own franchise films.

4 Michael Myers (Halloween)

There are many iconic movie slashers out there, and one notable example is the sinister Michael Myers in the Halloween franchise. Donning his unnerving trademark grey rubber mask, Myers was seemingly unstoppable and chilled audiences to the bone with his quiet unsettling presence as he lurked in the shadows and slaughtering his victims. He is, perhaps, the ultimate slasher villain.

Myers doesn’t speak in any of his films, but he does not need to. His lack of dialogue heightens the terror of what is already a frightening character. It somewhat dehumanizes him, adds to his almost supernatural presence, makes him harder to find, and just makes him scarier. Speaking would probably kill the fear-inducing aura of his character.

3 Gromit (Wallace & Gromit)

Stop motion duo Wallace and Gromit first appeared in the short, A Grand Day Out. The pair were a success and went on to star in two more shorts and the Academy Award-winning movie, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, all of which are among the greatest claymation movies of all time.

Intelligent dog Gromit is not only silent, but he has no visible mouth, meaning there’s one less expressive feature to work with. Yet this hasn’t stopped Gromit from being perhaps one of the most underrated animated characters out there. His eyebrows alone are enough to convey what he is thinking, and a single exasperated eye roll can have an audience laughing. Wallace is certainly lovable, but it is Gromit who steals the show every single time.

2 Thing (The Addams Family)

One of the greatest silent movie and TV characters ever is Thing from The Addams Family. To have a simple human hand to become a fully realized and successful character is a remarkable achievement all around.

Thing has to rely on hand gestures and finger movements not just to express himself (one excellent gag is when Gomez tells Thing “It’s terrible when you stutter!”) but to move about and accomplish any daily task — all of which he does in creative and entertaining ways. An excellent example of this is when he becomes a courier at an office in the first movie. Thing is a marvelous and fascinating character who is just a delight to watch.

1 The Magic Carpet (Aladdin)

From the moment he is discovered in the Cave of Wonders, the Magic Carpet is a loyal and invaluable sidekick to Aladdin and is always on hand to help him out of trouble. For what is essentially an inanimate object, the Carpet is full of life and endearing to watch.

With tassels acting as hands and fabric flexibility on his side, the Carpet is extremely expressive and emotive without making a single sound. This is particularly well demonstrated when he first encounters Aladdin and the skittish Abu. It may be the Genie who understandably steals the show but the Magic Carpet is an underrated masterpiece in character acting and animation, proving that actions are certainly louder than words.
