Sitcoms love to put their characters in all kinds of sticky situations hence their name. While most of the time these situations are meant to make audiences laugh at their favorite characters’ misfortunes, sometimes writers like to mess with characters’ love lives too.

The love triangle is a common trope across storytelling and one that sitcom writers especially love to employ. After all, nothing gets viewers riled up and excited to watch a show more than them eagerly awaiting for their couple to make it official. The last 20 years of television have given us some of the greatest TV shows of all time and they’ve also given us some pretty amazing love triangles.

10 Friends: Rachel, Ross, & Joey

Friends is hands down one of the most iconic sitcoms of all time. With its ten season run and historic salary for the original six cast members, Friends truly is a sitcom classic. Like all classics, Friends had its fair share of love drama.

While there were several little love triangles in Friends none of them beat the epic Rachel, Ross, and Joey love triangle. While not all viewers were happy with the introduction of the story, it did bring drama to the show and made viewers realize that Joey was more than just a womanizer.

9 Girl Meets World: Riley, Lucas, & Maya

Fourteen years after the beloved sitcom Boy Meets World ended, the world was reunited with Corey and Topanga Matthews through the Disney Channel original series Girl Meets World. This time the action focused on Riley, Corey and Topanga’s daughter, who was eager to take the world by storm.

It’s hard to top Corey and Topanga’s epic love story so instead, the writers decided to put Riley in an epic love triangle. Over three seasons Riley and her best friend Maya struggled with their feelings involving one of their closest friends Lucas.

8 Community: Jeff, Britta, & Annie

While Community never gained the success that The Office and Parks and Recreation did, it’s still a beloved sitcom by many fans. While the sitcom had a lot of laughs, one thing it was missing out on was an epic love story. Thus, the Jeff, Britta, and Annie love triangle was born.

The love triangle was hotly debated by fans of Community with Team Britta and Team Annie fans compiling pro and con lists for why their couple should end up together. Fans of Britta wanted her to end up with Jeff because they were the original pairing of the series while fans of Annie felt she was the right choice because the couple helped each other on such personal levels.

7 Schitt’s Creek: Alexis, Mutt, & Ted

In recent years the Canadian sitcom Schitt’s Creek has been hailed as one of the best sitcoms of the last ten years but it had a slow start in getting mass approval. One of the reasons Schitt’s Creek has become so successful is because of its endearing and messy characters.

One of the more traditional plots of Schitt’s Creek arises when Alexis Rose finds herself infatuated with two town residents who are complete opposites. Mutt is the rugged bad boy of the town while Ted is the golden boy who works as a vet.

6 How I Met Your Mother: Robin, Barney, & Ted

How I Met Your Mother has an interesting relationship with its fans thanks to the unanimously hated finale of the series after its nine-season run. Still, many fans consider the Robin, Barney, and Ted love triangle to be one of the greatest of all time, even if it did give them major headaches.

In fact, the love triangle is one of the reasons many fans continued to tune in week after week. What’s interesting about this love triangle is that both sides get a win in some form. After all, Robin does end up with Barney for several years before she reconnects with Ted later.

5 Fuller House: D.J., Steve, & Matt

D.J. Tanner and Steve became one of the best couples to come out of the original ABC sitcom Full House so many fans were shocked to learn that in the Netflix reboot Fuller House, they weren’t together. However, the creators knew fans would miss Steve and so they brought him back which lead to the Fuller House love triangle.

In the early seasons, D.J. dates Matt, her coworker, and part owner in their veterinary clinic. While the two are a cute match, Matt can’t compete with the history and chemistry that Steve and D.J. have after knowing each other for decades.

4 The Office: Pam, Jim, & Karen

The Office is no stranger to love triangles and yet one stands out above the rest: the Pam, Jim, and Karen love triangle. While its true many fans were always rooting for Jim and Pam to get together, things were certainly shaken up when Karen entered the picture.

Karen was a nice addition to the show because she really understood Jim and they got along. She also was never super territorial over him. However, even all her positive traits couldn’t change the fact that Jim was destined to be with Pam.

3 Love, Victor: Victor, Mia, & Benji

While some might think that the Love, Victor love triangle is unnecessary, it actually a relatable storyline for many LGBT teens who are still figuring out their sexuality.

In the series, which was inspired by the film Love, Simon, Victor starts dating Mia, Creekwood’s “it” girl. However, as the series progresses and Victor begins to understand his sexuality he grows closer with Benji, another Creekwood High student who is openly gay. Part of what makes this love triangle so relatable is that Victor isn’t trying to hurt anybody, he’s just trying to figure who he is.

2 Never Have I Ever: Devi, Ben, & Paxton

Released in April of 2020, Never Have I Ever is a Netflix original that centers on the life of Devi, a first-generation Indian-American teenager who is hoping to rebrand herself as a cool girl after a terrible freshman year.

Part of Devi’s plan to become cool is to land herself a boyfriend. Her first pick Paxton, the most popular boy in school who is definitely out of Devi’s league, or so she thinks. As Paxton and Devi get closer, she also finds herself finding common ground with her childhood nemesis Ben.

1 New Girl: Schmidt, Elizabeth, & Cece

While most of the romances on New Girl followed a more “will-they, won’t-they” approach, there were a handful of love triangles to add some drama to the comedic show. One of the best love triangles to come out of New Girl happens when Schmidt finds himself with feelings for Cece and his former college girlfriend Elizabeth.

Unlike most of the love triangles on this list, Schmidt ends up dating both Cece and Elizabeth at the same time which only adds to the drama and shenanigans.
