There have been too many games to count with everyone’s favorite web-head as the star. There have been several bad and good ones, as well as pinball machines. These games all come from different aspects of them, from gameplay to story.

It is often debated with any franchise what is the best in various media formats. For Spider-Man, many fans might agree that Insomniac’s Spider-Man is the best while others hold the Spider-Man (2000) game on PS1 in their hearts. However, this could all be settled if fans analyze the Metacritic scores from the various critics that review these games.

10 Spider-Man: Battle for New York – 68

The Nintendo DS game received a mixed response. Critics did, overall, like the 2D adventure. However, one of the biggest issues was in repetitive missions. Compared to the other DS titles, critics often stated it would be better to play those.

The game only takes three hours to beat (according to HowLongToBeat). Still, it is eerily similar to a beat ’em up game that are often not that long. It is fair to see why critics did not jump on this game’s bandwagon compared to the numerous other handheld titles for Spider-Man. The DS port of Ultimate Spider-Man is heavily praised, so when comparing the two games, Ultimate just provides a much better experience.

9 Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions – 73

Shattered Dimensions entered the world as a mixed bag of either critics loving the game of feeling indifferent about it. The major issues with the game were in its gameplay and the glitches. On top of that, the open-world New York is not as great as it was in the titles that came before it. The level design and gameplay were also described as repetitive.

Critics, though, did have some positives for the game such as its enjoyment factor. Players might find the more linear gameplay more appealing, and the game offered a lot of items to collect. The game is definitely divisive and just depends on who is playing it if they like it or not.

8 Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro – 74

The sequel to the often praised Spider-Man (2000) game, Enter Electro often receives close to the same amount of praise but does not quite reach it. Most of the issues critics had with the game were about how short it was, the camera, and the controls. A critic from IGN described the camera as being a “drunk cameraman.” Still, the game is often named as one of the best Spider-Man video games.

For those that loved the 2000 game, there is not much of a difference. The game provided a tad open-world exploration when Spidey is investigating crimes but not so much compared to the Tobey Maguire movie adaptations. It definitely expanded off the 2000 game and provided more memorable villains. Although, the level design is not as vibrant as its predecessor. Both games average out at 7.5 hours (according to HowLongToBeat), the story and levels of the first game make it feel a lot longer.

7 Ultimate Spider-Man – 74

A game that strongly is based in the comics, it has a unique style compared to other Spider-Man games as well as unique gameplay by switching from Spider-Man and Venom. However, this game did receive mixed reviews from critics. The main gripes are in the difficulty and how short the story is.

The game did receive a lot more praise than negatives. Critics seemed to love the comic book aesthetic and the overall gameplay, but the difficulty with bosses required multiple tries, (according to a critic from Cincinnati Enquirer). Still, the controls and overall gameplay were vastly different than previous titles which could create a big learning curve for players that had experience with the movie titles.

6 Spider-Man: The Movie – 77

The game adapting the first Tobey Maguire film also had a lot of praise (like its sequel). Critics praised its controls and the open-worldness of New York. For the controls, it played very similarly to the Spider-Man (2000) and Enter Electro games. Graphics were also a plus.

Most of the cons for the game was that it seemed to lack “innovation” as one critic from Official Xbox Magazine said. It offers a fun experience with simple controls (like the PS1 games) but besides some interesting boss battles with multiple villains that do not appear in the movie, there is not much else. Also, critics complained about interior levels, saying they were very confined (which can be a problem for a character like Spider-Man who jumps around a lot).

5 Spider-Man (2000) – 77

One of the best Spider-Man games of its time, this is another title often universally loved (depending on the system it is played on). For the PS1 port, many critics state the graphics, gameplay, levels, and music are all as close to perfect as it can be (although the game can be rather hard).

On top of the pros already mentioned, the game also has a story that feels ripped straight out of comics. There are lots of unique villain bosses and Spider-Man quips. There are also a lot of tributes to the Spider-Man comics as well as easter eggs and references. Plus, the game has its own set of challenges that offer some replay value as well.

4 Spider-Man 2 – 81

One of the few successful movie-adaptation games, Spider-Man 2 is another game often loved by critics. The movie is often universally praised and so does the game seem to be. It, too, offers an open-world New York and the gameplay is solid. While levels lacked a lot of substance, the game does offer replay value with several challenges that rival some of those found on the Spider-Man PS4 game. It is not only ranked as one of the best Spider-Man games but one of the best Marvel games.

However, the game does have its fair share of issues. Mainly, as stated, the levels are bland. Things do tend to get repetitive but the unique challenges and the time it came out in are its saving grace. There were few Spider-Man games that allowed such exploration in New York as this game did.

3 Spider-Man: Mysterio’s Menace – 84

This game on the GameBoy Advance did suffer from some issues, one of those being how quickly the player needs to learn the controls. Instead of easing the player into the game, it is more of a thrust which the older games did do often. Still, critics do state that the game offers a lot of entertainment and the gameplay is excellent.

Many handheld games of the generation did suffer from horrible animation and visuals, but Mysterio’s Menace did not have this problem. One of the key positives of the game is that it is easy on the eyes. In terms of the handheld Spider-Man games, it is ranked amongst the best.

2 Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales – 85

Although they had set a high bar, Insomniac returned with the Miles Morales video game. Everything was still there from the previous installment, but critics and fans do believe that the game was rather short. Spider-Man took an average of 17 hours to beat the main story while Miles Morales only took 7.5 hours to beat (according to HowLongToBeat).

Despite this, the game still had many great gameplay mechanics while introducing new ones (including Miles’ ability to turn invisible and the venom strikes). This added some newness to make it unique and not just another Spider-Man PS4 clone. The positives to this game vastly outweigh the negatives.

1 Marvel’s Spider-Man – 87

The Spider-Man game on PS4 was released to almost universal praise. Between its gripping story, excellent gameplay, and an explorable, open-world New York, this game had it all. Critics state all of these aspects of the game while also stating that it does have some issues. However, these issues are just minor nitpicks in the storytelling mostly.

Most Spider-Man fans will say this is the best game made for the wallcrawler thus far. The game adds lots of value to spending time between completing interesting side missions and unlocking various suits that pay homage to the different stories of Spider-Man. Insomniac took great care with a character that had recently suffered from some bad games and completely reignited the franchise on the gaming level.
