Many fans agree that Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is one of the best games on Nintendo Switch, not to mention one of the most entertaining Strategy RPGs around. The excellent combination of the two seemingly disparate franchises in actuality worked really well, creating a neat and highly playable mix of RPG and turn-based strategy combat.
Of course, Mario + Rabbids isn’t the only great strategy RPG around. The genre has been around almost as long as there have been videogames, so it boasts some of the challenging and beloved games of all time, in some of the biggest franchises around.
10 Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story
Even before Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, Nintendo’s mascot was already known for having a fantastic series of RPGs with deeply strategic combat, with a highlight being the third game in the Mario & Luigi series on DS/3DS. The story is a lot of fun, featuring the Mario Bros teaming up with their arch-enemy Bowser to stop their mutual adversary Fawful, but it’s the combat that proves the real diversion.
A skilled player can use the counter system to not take any damage at all, as long as they’ve studied their enemies’ attacks Dark Souls-style, although attacking requires just as much skill to use effectively too.
9 Final Fantasy Tactics
This spin-off from the popular Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy Tactics focuses even more on strategic combat and that makes for one of the most popular SRPGs of all time. Set in Ivalice, the same world as the later Final Fantasy XII, during the time of a great conflict called the Lion War. Tactics features a battle system that still receives acclaim over 20 years later.
Instead of the 2D battles of other Final Fantasy games at the time, Tactics battles take place on a 3D isometric landscape where characters have to actually move within range of enemies and take them down. Fans hail Final Fantasy Tactics as one of the best games in the franchise, and games are still trying to emulate it decades later.
8 XCOM: Enemy Unknown
While the sequels to XCOM would add various improvements, the first game in the rebooted series XCOM: Enemy Unknown was the perfect mix of setting, story, and strategy. There’s an alien invasion afoot and the player has to manage an organization built to counter just such an invasion.
The turn-based combat is so perfect and exciting that every other game with similar combat is called “XCOM-like.” Admittedly, it’s not as much an RPG as other games, but every squad member will become a full character – someone that fans will be sad to see die.
7 Dragon Age: Origins
Years after pioneering the western RPG with Baldur’s Gate, and while still in full production of its epic space RPG Mass Effect, BioWare returned to the fantasy RPG genre with the incredible first game in the Dragon Age series. It boasted a dark, unforgiving fantasy realm with plenty of backstabbing and betrayal two years before Game of Thrones appeared, and it was just as compelling.
The part-turn-based, part-real-time party combat was excellent and highly tactical, with many different options depending on what party members you had with you. Just make sure to have a few mages on hand at all times.
6 Wasteland 3
For anyone who’s a fan of the Fallout series of games, the Wasteland series needs to be considered as the only reason Fallout exists is because the developers of Wasteland 1 couldn’t get the rights back. Wasteland 2 and 3 are similarly set in a post-apocalyptic future and can be both dark and comedic, depending on the situation. Both are excellent games, but the unique snowy location of the more recent title is more unique in the genre.
The turn-based combat can be extremely challenging as you’ll need to rely on taking cover and raise characters’ skills as quickly as possible, but it’s still lots of fun.
5 Divinity: Original Sin 2
From the creators of the upcoming/early access Baldur’s Gate III, Divinity: Original Sin 2 is often called the greatest RPG of all time, and a lot of the reason for that is due to the game’s excellent and inventive battle system. Players have to take angles, height, and natural cover into account, but it’s the environment that they have to watch out for the most – or use to their advantage.
For example, a lightning bolt into a pool of water will electrify it, but a fireball into it will create steam that obscures vision. Don’t have a pool? Make it rain and create one, or use blood instead. There’s a lot of freedom in how Divinity is played.
4 Earthbound
It’s the Nintendo RPG with the biggest and most devoted fanbase, but it’s sad how difficult it remains to get any games in the Mother trilogy. Mother 2, a.k.a. Earthbound, remains the most popular and the most accessible. An alien invasion from a powerful entity known as Giygas unites a group of young friends to go out and save their homes, and ultimately the world.
The combat system is cool and has a lot of options, especially as opponents often have a vulnerability to a particular type of attack, but it’s the variety of enemies in the game that make Earthbound particularly memorable. There aren’t many SRPGs that let the player fight New Age Retro Hippies and Pieces of Abstract Art.
3 Fire Emblem: Three Houses
The latest game in the long-running Fire Emblem tactical RPG series is arguably the best. The series is known for doing two things especially well: turn-based combat and building characters through social interaction. Three Houses is probably the deepest in terms of its RPG elements too.
Previous games were closer to straight strategy games but Three Houses adds more character interaction, including a full hub world to directly explore. The satisfying combat remains mostly unchanged, but as it’s one of the best strategy series ever made that’s no bad thing.
2 South Park: The Fractured But Whole
The two South Park RPGs from Ubisoft are both excellent, but while The Stick of Truth is arguably the better game (it has more locations and a better story) sequel The Fractured But Whole has a more enjoyable combat system and the more compelling superhero theme.
If the player is a fan of the show it’s a perfect adaptation, with graphics that mimic an episode, the correct voices, and the same devastating sense of humor. The grid-based battle system becomes a lot of fun too, as soon as the weird and wacky “superpowers” come into play.
1 Undertale
One of the most beloved and twisted games of all time, Undertale acts as both a homage to Nintendo’s classic Earthbound and a satire of the entire SRPG genre.
The player falls into a bizarre Alice in Wonderland-style fantasy world where even the tutorial flowers are trying to kill them. While it’s possible to fight through the game and treat it as a normal RPG, the twist with Undertale is that it’s also possible to instead befriend every enemy – which often requires just as much strategy to figure out as fighting them. It’s worth playing in order to understand the memes, if nothing else.
