10 Best Superman Movie Posters

Superman is probably the most famous and recognizable superhero of all time. First appearing in comics in 1938, Superman has fought crime and saved the world for decades. Naturally, he has been adapted countless times for the big screen, be it a solo movie or fighting crime with other DC superheroes.

With the many movies made, there were also many posters made. Ranging from direct to video animated surprise successes to box office hits and misses, some of these posters really bought justice to the Man of Steel, utilizing color, dynamic shots, and drawing to Superman’s comic book roots.

10 Superman III (1983)

10 Best Superman Movie Posters

The third sequel in the Salkind series was of course Superman III. Unlike its predecessors, the movie wasn’t too well received. The movie’s main poster, whilst technically true to the comic book style, is pretty flat and the color palette isn’t much fun.

This alternative poster, however, is much more interesting. There is more action going on – even Richard Pryor’s bumbling computer nerd looks somewhat dynamic – and the chromes and surfaces of the computer room give it a cool futuristic feel.

9 Batman Vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice (2016)

10 Best Superman Movie Posters

It is fair to say that Zack Snyder’s Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice is a movie that most superhero movie fans would rather forget. However, whilst the main movie poster had the two brooding superheroes staring each other down, the alternative posters are modern works of art.

Depicted in a retro collage style, both heroes have the other’s logo ripped out and stamped over their faces. With a limited yet bold color palette, these posters work really well together. Batman Vs Superman is an example of just because the movie was terrible, it doesn’t mean that the posters are terrible too.

8 Superman: Doomsday (2007)

10 Best Superman Movie Posters

Superman: Doomsday is an animated Superman movie – and a dark and violent one at that! Based on the Death of Superman comic book story, it follows Superman’s first battle against the terrifying Doomsday.

People do not need to see the movie to know that this isn’t going to be a light-hearted movie. It’s gothic, graphic, and eyecatching. Against a dark cityscape that could pass for Gotham rather than Metropolis, the Superman logo stands big, bold, and dripping blood. This poster verges more into the dark territory of Batman than Superman but it doesn’t make it any less great.

7 Superman (1978)

10 Best Superman Movie Posters

The first official movie to star the Man of Steel, Superman boasted a stellar cast including Marlon Brando, Ned Beatty, and Christopher Reeve as Clark Kent himself. The main poster of the movie has become an icon among movie and Superman fans.

With the chrome styling of the “S” against a stormy sky, it looks reminiscent of perhaps a rock album cover of the time and is a great example of less is more. What’s most significant is the tagline: “You’ll believe a man can fly.” The 1978 Superman is recognized for its groundbreaking special effects at the time, doing a then-convincing job of making Superman fly.

6 Superman II (1980)

10 Best Superman Movie Posters

Naturally, due to the success of the first movie, a sequel was made in the form of Superman II. Whilst the main poster is a bit subpar (Zod and his Kryptonian supporters flying towards Superman look weird and fake), the alternative poster is superb. In a style similar to art deco, this poster is action-packed and dynamic. The bright primary colors of Superman stand out against the burning city as he gets ready to take out Zod and his lackeys, with a dizzy drop to a crash in the streets down below!

5 Man of Steel (2013)

10 Best Superman Movie Posters

Whilst Zack Snyder’s attempts to depict Superman in a darker tone didn’t land with audiences and fans, this alternative poster of Man of Steel was successful in capturing the tone Snyder wanted whilst staying true to Superman.

Superman himself is mostly hidden in shadow but his iconic “S” is perfectly visible, dark red against the cold dark greys and navy blues. It is not only great in capturing what Snyder wanted but it is a good example of a poster that is simple yet effective. Man of Steel may not have been a success but this poster certainly was.

4 Superman IV: The Quest For Peace (1987)

10 Best Superman Movie Posters

Sequel Number 4 to the 1978 film, Superman IV: The Quest For Peace, is unfortunately not the best movie. In fact, it’s considered one of the worst movies ever made, which is why it was nearly twenty years before Superman hit the screens again.

However, the poster for this box office flop is worthy to be displayed for the artwork alone. Created by artist Daniel Goozee, the piece is akin to a comic book front cover and luckily hides the fact that this movie is not good.

3 The Death of Superman (2018)

10 Best Superman Movie Posters

Whilst it was a direct-to-video release, The Death of Superman was a successful animated movie and received positive reviews. Like Superman: Doomsday, it follows the plot of The Death of Superman comic book.

As it was direct-to-video, it technically doesn’t have a movie poster, but the Blu-ray cover is certainly not something to be overlooked. Using Superman’s tattered red cape as a makeshift flag against a broken Metropolis with the sun as a symbol of hope burning behind it, this would still look fantastic displayed on any wall.

2 Superman: Unbound (2013)

10 Best Superman Movie Posters

Another direct-to-video Superman release is Superman: Unbound. The story follows the comic book story Superman: Brainiac and sees Superman team up with his cousin Supergirl to take on the evil Brainiac.

Again, whilst there isn’t a theatrical movie poster for Unbound, the DVD cover is really cool. Not only is the comic book style display-worthy, but it also has Superman using another power other than flight – laser eyes! It’s hard to go wrong with laser eyes and it looks particularly awesome here.

1 Superman Returns (2006)

After a nearly twenty-year break from cinema screens, Superman was bought back into movies in the feature film Superman Returns. To make sure he came back with a bang, the marketing material had to be good – and it certainly succeeded.

The poster for Superman Returns encompasses everything that is Superman. With a dynamic action shot of Superman flying above the Earth and the iconic reds of his cape and the ‘S’ standing out against the cooler color palette, this poster is a perfect representative of not just a Superman movie but a superhero movie.
