For anyone who once to keep binge-watching romantic movies, the good news Netflix continues to have a full slate of them that subscribers can enjoy. For starters, there are those guilty pleasure romantic films that people secretly like, such as The Kissing Booth. And then, there are classic rom-coms that no one will get tired of watching.
One may also be surprised to learn that there are still several other available romance movies on Netflix. They may not be as popular but they’re good to check out, nonetheless.
10 Jumping The Broom (2011)
This little-known 2011 movie centers on two families who end up clashing on the leadup to a wedding that would entwine them with each other for life. Jumping the Broom stars Paula Patton and Laz Alonso as the couple about to get married who find themselves at the center of all the mayhem. The cast also includes Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, and Julie Bowen.
Jumping the Broom may be a romance movie, but it also offers some comedy and family drama so it really has a little bit of everything.
9 Playing For Keeps (2012)
Playing for Keeps is one of the few rom-coms that Gerard Butler has agreed to do over the years. As fans may know, Butler is more known for his hit action movies such as 300, Den of Thieves and more recently, the Fallen movie franchise.
In this film, Butler stars as a former football star who decides to coach his son’s football team after falling on hard times. And he tries to get his life back track, he also finds himself being pursued by several football moms.
8 Falling Inn Love (2019)
In this 2019 Netflix movie, actress and singer Christina Milian stars as a woman who makes a life-changing decision after entering a contest and winning an inn in New Zealand. As she works on fixing and reopening the place, she meets a contractor (UnREAL’s Adam Demos) who eventually wins her affections.
Milian admitted that she wanted to do the movie because of the filming location. “I was excited about working in New Zealand because I’m really big on travel and seeing new places in the world and exploring new things,” she explained.
7 After (2019)
It may not be one of Netflix’s more popular teen rom-com movies, but After offers a similar storyline, nonetheless. Based on a novel by Anna Todd, the story centers on a student named Tessa (Josephine Langford) who meets and falls in love with a mysterious guy (Hero Fiennes Tiffin) who turns out to be harboring a dark secret.
The movie also stars Selma Blair who plays Tessa’s mom. At the moment, Langford and Tiffin are believed to be filming the second sequel to the movie entitled After We Fell.
6 Always Be My Maybe (2019)
In this underrated rom-com, comedian Ali Wong stars as a famous chef who reunites (and eventually falls in love) with an old friend (Randall Park) after returning to her hometown.
The movie is full of grand romantic gestures and hilarious, memorable quotes. Not to mention, it also features a memorable cameo from Keanu Reeves who stars as an eccentric version of himself. As it turns out too, Reeves improvised some of his most memorable scenes in Always Be My Maybe, including one where he was air-fighting.
5 Love, Guaranteed (2020)
This 2020 Netflix movie tells the story of a lawyer (Rachael Leigh Cook) who takes on a case involving a client who suffered continuous romance failures after using an app that supposedly guarantees love.
For Cook, the idea of for the movie (one where also serves as a producer) came to her after hearing about a lawsuit filed against MillerCoors for its Coors beer slogan. “So I thought, ‘Imagine if one of these dating sites made the wildly irresponsible decision to guarantee that if you pay for their service, you too will find the love of your life?’” she said.
4 Candy Jar (2018)
Candy Jar features a teenage love story surrounding two highly-competitive students (Jacob Latimore and Sami Gayle) who are determined to get into their dream colleges. The movie also stars Uzo Aduba and Christina Hendricks who play their parents. Oscar winner Helen Hunt play teens’ favorite guidance counselor.
For Gayle, the film sends a clear message to people her age. “I think oftentimes as teenagers transition into young adulthood, we’re driven by expectations placed upon us by our parents and our teachers, and our peers,” she said. “We need to carve a path for ourselves…”
3 The Lost Husband (2020)
In this 2020 movie, Leslie Bibb stars as a newly widowed parent who decides to move to her estranged aunt’s goat farm in central Texas to make a new life for herself and her children. Unexpectedly, she meets a charming ranch manager (Josh Duhamel).
Duhamel revealed that being offered the movie came at just the right because he was trying to get away from some things for a little while. “I wanted to go work just to get away from it and I really wanted to do something like this.”
2 Someone Great (2019)
This 2019 Netflix movie stars Gina Rodriguez as a woman who decides to go on a final adventure in New York right before she embarks on a cross-country move following a break-up. Rodriguez also serves as one of the film’s producers and one of her main goals was for the film to celebrate diversity as much as possible. “One of my main goals as a producer was to bring on a very inclusive cast,” she told Variety. “To have the cast look like the world I walk through.” Meanwhile, the movie also stars Brittany Snow and LaKeith Stanfield.
1 Alex Strangelove (2018)
This Netflix LGBTQ+ film centers around a high school student Alex Truelove (Daniel Doheny) who is getting anxious about making love to his girlfriend (Madeline Weinstein) for the first time. His situation becomes more complicated when he finds himself drawn to a guy that he just met named Elliot (Antonio Marziale).
For the film’s writer and director Craig Johnson, the film is “partially autobiographical.” He told Collider, “I didn’t go through exactly the same journey that Alex goes through, in high school, but I did have a circuitous and incremental coming out process that took me well into my 20s…”
