10 Character Inconsistencies In VIkings

History Channel’s Vikings is an iconic show with an iconic cast of characters. It is possibly one of the more original TV shows of this past decade and for the most part, has lived up to the billing. Yet, like all shows, there are some character inconsistencies that seem to come out of nowhere.

Certain characters, that fans thought that they knew, decide to make out of character decisions and leave fans scratching their heads in confusion. Here are ten of the more extreme of these character inconsistencies.

10 Bjorn’s Hatred Of Adultery

10 Character Inconsistencies In VIkings

When Bjorn was a young man he saw firsthand what adultery would do to a family. His father’s obsession with a Seer’s vision of him having more sons quashed his love and affection for his wife Lagertha.

Bjorn berated his father for his misgivings and appeared to want nothing to do with that lifestyle. Yet, upon becoming a man himself, he has done nothing but leave one wife for another. In fact, he has so many children he doesn’t even bother to get to know them.

9 Ragnar’s Drug Addiction

10 Character Inconsistencies In VIkings

Ragnar was always pulled in so many directions it was hard to wonder if he even knew what he wanted. First, he wanted to explore, then he wanted sons, after that he wanted power, and then lastly, he wanted drugs.

Each one of these actions conflicted with the others making it hard to understand why his drug addiction arc was even introduced in the first place, as all did was take away from all the other wants and dreams that Ragnar so desperately sought.

8 Heahmund’s Willingness To Fight With Pagans

10 Character Inconsistencies In VIkings

Vikings have had some really complex characters over its time on air but probably one of the hardest characters to understand was the Christian Heahmund. He was a devout man who considered himself a soldier for Christ. At one time, he appeared to despise the Viking horde for their paganism.

However, shortly after meeting Lagertha, he changed his position to be all too willing to murder others in the name of Odin. Apparently, Lagertha was the one forbidden fruit that Heahmund couldn’t resist.

7 Ragnar’s Obsession With Sons

10 Character Inconsistencies In VIkings

Ragnar’s ambition was always going to lead to his downfall. He was a farmer that wanted to be an explorer but the only way of doing such things is to gain enormous amounts of power.

He clearly loved his first wife Lagertha but because of his obsession with having another son, he gladly disposed of her to marry Aslaug, who proceeded to give him all the sons he desired but shortly afterward, without even the slightest bit of hesitation he abandoned them.

6 Lagertha’s Usurper Hypocrisy

10 Character Inconsistencies In VIkings

Lagertha didn’t have an easy time after her first husband Ragnar dumped her for Aslaug but even during the worst times in her life she never stopped trying to ascend to higher grounds.

Whether this was her way of trying to outdo Ragnar or if deep inside, she and her ex-husband shared the same lust for power is debatable. Yet, one thing that is certain is for someone who complains about being usurped, she doesn’t have a problem of doing it to others.

5 Harald’s Ability To Murder His Brother

10 Character Inconsistencies In VIkings

When Harald and Halfdan were first introduced in Vikings, the two brothers were inseparable. Their love for each other appeared to be the opposite of the brotherly love that Ragnar and Rollo had. Yet, as Harald’s eyes turned to expanding his own lands and Halfdan’s to exploration, the two found themselves on opposite sides of a war for Kattegat.

A land that neither was from nor cared that much about. It is perplexing how easy it was for Harald to murder a brother he once would have died for.

4 Astrid’s Sorted Affairs

10 Character Inconsistencies In VIkings

When Astrid was first introduced in the series, she seemed to be someone who truly and deeply cared for Lagertha. She was her most trusted ally in battle and one of Lagertha’s only love interest to actually care for her.

So, that makes it all the more confusing when she begins a relationship with Lagertha’s son Bjorn. Whether it was lust or love we’ll never know but it appeared to be a relationship that she desperately wanted to hide from her mistress Lagertha.

3 Rollo’s Willingness To Assist Ivar Over Bjorn

10 Character Inconsistencies In VIkings

Rollo has always had a unique relationship with his nephew and possible son Bjorn. He has always shown the love of a father for the young man even when Bjorn was a boy.

He protected him in battle and appeared to carry on those same feelings as Bjorn grew into a great warrior in his own right. Yet, when Ivar asked him to help him take Kattegat, Rollo didn’t hesitate to join the nephew he never knew against his long lost love interest Lagertha and her son Bjorn.

2 Siggy’s Treachery

10 Character Inconsistencies In VIkings

After her husband Earl Haraldson was killed by Ragnar in one-on-one combat it appeared that Siggy would stop at nothing to return to her past glory. Her actions of trying to sow discord between Rollo and Ragnar were initially guided as a way of placing Rollo on the throne instead of his brother.

Yet, as time passed, she seemed rather reserved in her role as a servant and even went so far as to die for the children of the man who murdered her husband in cold blood.

1 Sigurd’s Abilities

When Sigurd was born, Aslaug made it look like he was the child of destiny thanks to his snake eyes. Yet, as the children progressed, Sigurd turned out to be the least impressive of Ragnar’s children.

He was an average fighter who failed to live up to his other brothers’ standards. Especially when compared to Ivar, who excelled even beyond Bjorn. Sigurd’s contentious relationship with Ivar appeared to be the only reason he was on the show and of course, that time ended with an ax to the head.
