Hollywood loves adapting kids’ literature into film and TV, so it’s shocking that these beloved, best-selling books haven’t arrived on the screen.

What makes a book movie-worthy? Is it the story or narrative that keeps the audience in the thralls of excitement? Is it the beloved characters that the reader wishes could exist on a more physical level? Or is it the marketability of a novel’s elements to rake in the profits at the box office? This is true for most books, but what about children’s literature?
Works like Harry Potter and Winnie the Pooh are childhood staples, but there are so many other beloved stories that have been passed over for years. Have a look at these 10 titles yet to grace the screen.
10 Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator
It might come as a surprise to some people, but Roald Dahl’s immortal classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory received a rather sci-fi-heavy sequel. Charlie, Grandpa Joe, and the rest of the Bucket family take a ride on Wonka’s Wonkavator into the depths of outer space where they encounter a giant space-hotel, astronauts, and Vermicious Knids before crashing back to the candyman’s factory. It’s a strange book, but one that would make a fascinating adaptation.
9 Junie B. Jones
Written by the late Barbara Park, Junie B. Jones has been a beloved face of children’s literature from as early as 1992. The character’s antics and adventures are rife with comedic possibilities that young audiences would adore.
While there’s nothing wrong with the character existing in the imaginations of the readers, the books still have the potential for a series directed at younger viewers.
8 The Chronicles of Prydain
It’s true that Disney already attempted a screen version of Lloyd Alexander’s famous fantasy series, but The Black Cauldron is hardly a proper adaptation. Since the Disney Company still owns the rights to the novels, this might be a good time to consider adapting the dark fantasy for a Disney+ series. With magic swords, witches, and giant cats, the books have more than a few odd and beloved fantasy tropes fans will enjoy.
7 The Deptford Mice Series
The Deptford Mice trilogy and the prequels would make excellent TV series. While the books by Robin Jarvis featuring talking mice and other small creatures living in Deptford, London might seem enchanting and adorable at first, the books are truly some of the most underrated dark fantasies in children’s fiction.
They involve black magic, murder, an evil cat god, and a whole slew of other dark themes, all of which would make for a wickedly fun TV series.
6 The Looking Glass Wars
The Looking Glass Wars is an interesting hybrid of genres. Alice is a lost princess, the Red Queen is a murderous monarch, the Cheshire Cat is a clawed assassin, and the Mad Hatter is a sword-swinging royal guard. On paper, a sci-fi/fantasy series about the “true” story of Alice in Wonderland should not work. Yet The Looking Glass Wars create a phenomenal fantasy realm inspired by Lewis Carroll’s classic novel.
5 A Cricket in Times Square
While the book by George Selden did receive a short film adaptation by the legendary Chuck Jones, an extended version of A Cricket in Times Square has yet to be released.
The tale of Chester Cricket and his friends Tucker the mouse and Harry the cat is perfect for an animated series, possibly another one for Disney+. The book has a warm and comforting vibe that would make even a subway station feel like home.
4 The Bartimaeus Series
Consider the Bartimaeus series as a young reader’s introduction to dark fantasy. In a world inhabited by djinn, imps, goblins, demons, and other magical entities, an ancient and wily djinni, Bartimaeus, must team up with a young wizard named Nathaniel to save the world from darker forces. It’s a beautiful blend of the modern and the magical that could be somewhat of a modern Witcher for younger readers.
3 The Mad Scientists’ Club
Many modern readers probably haven’t heard of this series from the ’60s, but if given the right direction, The Mad Scientists’ Club could potentially be one of the smartest children’s comedies ever released. Think of the Goonies, but make them all quirky science buffs who use things like ham radios, physics, and experiments to pull off pranks and hair-brained schemes. What kid wouldn’t want to watch that?
2 The Magic Tree House Series
How has this series not been brought to the screen yet? With over 54 entries in this long-running chapter book series, a TV adaptation would run for season after season. The books feature Jack and Annie on adventures throughout history in their titular teleporting tree house. The kids have been to ancient Egypt, colonial America, and Elizabethan England, and the adventures keep on coming.
1 The Kingdom Keepers Series
Rumors of a Disney film inspired by the Magic Kingdom have been circulating for a long time, but all the while the perfect story has been sitting right under their own nose. The Kingdom Keepers series might be a touch dated, but it definitely shines as a love letter to the parks, the characters, and the Imagineers. If given the right treatment and script, this could be the ultimate live-action Disney flick.
