10 Classic Hollywood Movies To Check Out If You Love Twilight

Forbidden love, glowing vampires, and vengeful werewolves all made the Twilight saga into a global phenomenon that continues to this day. Yet Bella and Edward’s love wasn’t uniquely original; their romance is derivative of many other love stories, such as Romeo & Juliet, and the core themes of the Twilight saga are reflected in many other classic movies.
While Twilight has influenced such modern movies as Fifty Shades of Grey, the recent Twilight renaissance has fans yearning for more films from the past that can give them that same blend of romance and the supernatural that they found in the first five films. Fortunately, there’s a wealth of Hollywood movies from the 1930s to the 1980s that will satisfy any Twilight fan.
10 Casablanca (1942)
One of the greatest films of all time, Casablanca has some of the best romantic quotes in film history. Michael Curtiz’s World War II romance features Ilsa caught in an emotional love triangle with two handsome men, her noble but boring husband Victor and her renegade ex-lover Rick.
Fans of Twilight will appreciate the endlessly quotable lines, the incredible acting, and most of all the themes of lost love and irrevocable romance. The film has a few parallels to New Moon, such as the female lead finding a new lover after her first love leaves her. In Casablanca, although Ilsa stays with her husband Victor, she still relies on Rick just as Bella relies on Jacob.
9 Rebecca (1940)
This romantic psychological thriller stars the celebrated actor Laurence Olivier and was Alfred Hitchcock’s first American project. Rebecca follows a widower who marries a second wife after his first wife, Rebecca, dies under mysterious circumstances. The widower is unable to escape Rebecca’s grasp on him and is constantly reminded of her presence through his housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers.
The film is beautifully acted, but Twilight fans will appreciate the central themes of the film: the battle between love and hate present in every character as well as jealousy and the revival of past mistakes. The new wife struggles to find an identity as she is overshadowed by the memory of Rebecca, just as Jacob struggles to find a place in Bella’s life while she is hung up on Edward after he leaves her.
8 Dirty Dancing (1987)
In Dirty Dancing, Baby goes on vacation with her family and falls in love with dance instructor Johnny as she replaces his dance partner for a performance at the holiday resort.
The core theme in this film is the forbidden love between two people from totally different worlds: the rich Baby who is a ‘plain yet pretty’ girl who needs confidence, and the working-class Johnny, who is a misunderstood loner. The chemistry between the two leads and the steamy kissing scenes will definitely appeal to fans of Edward and Bella’s romance.
7 West Side Story (1961)
One of the most influential movie musicals of all time that was inspired by William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story follows the rivalry between two gangs, the Jets and the Sharks from different ethnic backgrounds. The two protagonists are Tony (a former Jet) and Maria (the sister of the Sharks’ leader), who fall in love despite their differences.
This film is a must-watch for fans of Twilight as it combines forbidden love with brilliant musical interludes, and creates characters that are just as iconic and romantic as those found in Twilight.

A classic and timeless story of two star-crossed lovers from rival families, Romeo & Juliet has inspired thousands of love stories throughout the ages. Twilight has many similarities with this Shakespeare play, including the core themes of love, violence, rivalry, and jealousy.
In New Moon, just like Romeo and Juliet, Bella and Edward decide that they can’t live without each other, and Edward attempts to kill himself by exposing his vampiric nature to humans. In addition, at the beginning of the play, Juliet is promised to Paris, a rival to Romeo as Jacob is to Edward.
5 Pretty In Pink (1986)
This teenage love story follows working-class Andie who dates rich kid Blane despite their class differences. Andie’s best friend Duckie has feelings for her, creating a tumultuous love triangle, especially as Duckie hates Blane for being from a different class background to Andie and himself.
There are many parallels between Pretty in Pink and Twilight, but fans will love the multi-faceted characters and sweet storytelling, bringing a timeless story into the nostalgic 1980s time period. Andie is the object of many boys’ affections, just like Bella, and many of them fight over her throughout the film.
4 The Lost Boys (1987)
In The Lost Boys, brothers Sam and Mike move to “the murder capital of the world” and become involved with the local vampire subculture. Sam befriends two wannabe vampire hunters, and Mike falls in love with a girl who introduces him to a vampire biker gang. This comedic horror film is tons of fun and brings out the sexy, dangerous vampires that the Twilight saga tried to provide.
This film has a fun connection to Twilight as these vampires also shine. Glitter was added to the vampires’ fake blood to make it shimmer in the light, creating an ethereal effect.
3 Dangerous Liaisons (1988)
A period drama set in the French Renaissance, Dangerous Liaisons is perfect for fans that enjoyed seeing the flashbacks to the Twilight vampires’ human lives as well as the steamy romance between Edward and Bella. The film contains sex, scandal, and a star-studded cast including Michelle Pfeiffer, Uma Thurman, and Keanu Reeves.
The manipulation, assault, and power games that the characters engage in are a lot more adult than Twilight’s largely teenage audience, but fans will undoubtedly be swept up in the rich wit and elegant costuming. The film inspired a plethora of similar adaptions including Milos Forman’s Valmont in 1989 and Roger Kumble’s Cruel Intentions in 1999. The latter film is most notable for starring a pre-Legally Blonde Reese Witherspoon and Sarah Michelle Gellar of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame.
2 Teen Wolf (1985)
The typical teenage movie featuring the trope of a character with a hidden supernatural ability, Teen Wolf follows an American teenager who discovers he has the power to become a beast-like creature. This high school-based film is cheesy by modern standards but will guarantee a laugh from even the most hardcore Twilight fan.
The Teen Wolf TV show matches the tone of the Twilight films more, due to its dark atmosphere and broody characters, but the film has its own endearing charm, and fans will notice a lot of influences that went into the Twilight films.
1 The Hunger (1983)
David Bowie stars in Tony Scott’s gothic thriller The Hunger, which concerns a love triangle between a doctor and two vampires. As the ethereal vampire, Catherine Deneuve’s Miriam promises her lovers eternal life as vampires, but not eternal youth, as her current lover John discovers as he starts to age rapidly. The film received mixed reviews upon release but has since become a cult classic.
Twilight fans will enjoy the seduction scenes and vampirism, as well as the stylistic choices of the film that sometimes overshadow the story. In an age filled with films about sexy vampires, this is definitely one worth checking out, even if only to see the trippy, very 80s-appropriate opening sequence.
