Alan Wake 2 Is Remedys First Survival Horror Game

Remedy Entertainment has announced Alan Wake 2, a survival horror sequel to the beloved action adventure game, during The Game Awards 2021. The 2010 title saw best-selling novelist Alan Wake thrown into a horrific mystery which mysteriously reflects his latest book. The iconic adventure was recently remastered for the newest console generation, and now a full sequel to Alan Wake is in development at Remedy Entertainment.

When it released back in 2010 Remedy Entertainment’s Alan Wake was highly praised for its engaging narrative and tense atmosphere. Stuck in a journey which combines the action and psychological thriller genres, Wake finds himself confronted by deadly enemies who are seemingly possessed by darkness. Light acts as the writer’s greatest weapon, with flare guns and flashlights proving even more valuable than conventional weapons and firearms. Remedy Entertainment reportedly began creating Alan Wake as an open-world survival game, but during production direction was shifted to a more linear structure. The remastered version of the game, released in October 2021, brought Alan Wake’s graphics up to modern standards and assembled all of Alan Wake’s downloadable content into one package.

Announced at The Game Awards 2021, Alan Wake 2 sees Remedy Entertainment’s iconic franchise return as a full-blown survival horror title. An ominous narration teases a brand-new mystery for players to uncover, while various different locations are put on display. The titular writer will also make a return, though a horrific jump-scare suggests that all may not be as it appears. From overgrown crime scenes to rainslicked streets, Alan Wake 2 promises to strike fear into players once again when it launches in 2023 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

While Alan Wake was a revolutionary title in terms of storytelling, some gamers found the game’s actual gameplay lacking. The third-person shooter’s controls are quite stiff, and players are frequently forced to switch between different weapons to overcome their powerful opponents. While this combat inadequacy does reflect the protagonist’s background as a simple novelist, Alan Wake’s clumsy gameplay mechanics distracted some players from the experience. With Alan Wake 2 featuring an entirely new gameplay system, one that focuses on survival horror rather than linear third-person shooting, some gamers may find themselves more immersed within the dark world of the sequel.

While Remedy Entertainment has produced plenty of beloved titles, none have become quite as widely praised as Alan Wake. The title’s unique gameplay mechanics managed to enhance its masterful narrative, but Alan Wake 2 promises to significantly shake up the formula. With intimidating new environments to creep through and a switch towards survival horror, Alan Wake 2 looks poised to meet fans’ massive expectations.
