The Hangover was released way back in 2009 but is still considered to be one of the best modern comedies and one of the funniest movies of all time. Its two sequels, obviously, could not come close to the original’s success but were still quite successful.
Luckily for comedy fans who are looking for similar movies, there are many other movies to watch that are just as funny or almost as funny as The Hangover. Some of them even share themes and cast members which could make the watching even more enjoyable.
10 This Is The End (2013)
This Is The End could be considered a very successful experiment in some way. This apocalyptic comedy tells the story of a party hosted by James Franco where different celebrities gather before the apocalypse begins.
The cast doesn’t actually play themselves but rather the fictionalized versions of themselves which is even more hilarious. Some of the cast members include James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Emma Watson, Rihanna, Paul Rudd, Channing Tatum, Kevin Hart, and many others.
9 Wedding Crashers (2005)
Just like some of the protagonists in The Hangover, the main characters in Wedding Crashers aren’t very lucky with women. Yet, they prefer to enjoy their single status and decide to make the most out of it.
Played by Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, John and Jeremy are two divorce mediators who crash weddings while looking for women they can meet and seduce. Until John falls in love.
8 Horrible Bosses (2011)
Even though the premise for Horrible Bosses may seem awful, it is very relatable for many people which is probably why it became so successful commercially and critically.
The story follows three friends (played by Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis) who are sick of their overbearing bosses (played by Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston, and Colin Farrell) and decide to murder them.
7 Step Brothers (2008)
Step Brothers is one of those movies that has a premise that could very well play out in reality which makes the movie both funny and scary to an extent.
Starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly in the title roles, it follows to grown-up men who have to live together as stepbrothers after their single parents (with whom each of the brothers still lives) decide to marry.
6 Ted (2012)
When it comes to comedies with fantastical elements that are still mostly comedies than anything else, Ted is a great example as it manages to use the fantastical only in its premise.
Written and directed by Seth MacFarlane, it stars Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis and follows a man whose childhood dream comes true and his teddy bear Ted actually comes to life.
5 American Pie (1999)
Though it has been criticized time and time again, many people still admit to liking American Pie. Even on Rotten Tomatoes, the critics’ consensus reads, “So embarrassing it’s believable, American Pie succeeds in bringing back the teen movie genre.”
The story follows five best friends who decide to lose their virginity while they are still in high school. They make a pact and now do anything they can to succeed before their graduation.
4 We’re The Millers (2013)
Back when it was released in 2013, everyone was talking about We’re the Millers. And even though it didn’t get any particular critical praise, it still faired very well at the box office.
In the movie, a small-time pot dealer (played by Jason Sudeikis) has to smuggle drugs from Mexico to the United States so he decides to convince his neighbors to pretend to be his family. One of them is a stripper (Jennifer Aniston), another one is a runaway (Emma Roberts), and another one is a virgin (Will Poulter).
3 21 Jump Street (2012) & 22 Jump Street (2014)
Both 21 Jump Street and its sequel 22 Jump Street were based on the 1980s television series of the same name which helped launch Johnny Depp’s Career. In fact, Depp has a cameo in the first movie along with his co-star Peter DeLuise.
The two modern movies, however, star Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum in the title roles. The story follows two police officers who have to relive their high school years by going undercover and finding the source of a new synthetic drug circulating among the students.
2 The Nice Guys (2016)
The Nice Guys, unlike all the other movies on the list, is actually set in the past rather than the present day. But this historical context only adds to the atmosphere of the movie by enhancing costume design and locations.
In 1977 Los Angeles, a private eye (played by Ryan Gosling) and an enforcer (Russel Crowe) have to work together to investigate the disappearance of a teenage girl (Margaret Qualley).
1 Superbad (2007)
Like The Hangover, Superbad is often considered to be one of the best comedies of the 21st century. Indeed, the dialogue in the movie is very well-written and the chemistry between all the actors is outstanding which only adds to the movie’s quality.
The story follows two high school friends (played by Jonah Hill and Michael Cera) who decide to party and lose their virginity before they graduate. But as they try to execute their plan, a series of unfortunate events make it harder and harder to achieve their aim.
