American Horror Story Every Finn Wittrock Character Ranked

Ever since his debut in season 4 of American Horror Story, Finn Wittrock has become a firm fan favorite. Wittrock has appeared in four of the nine seasons and is set to return in the upcoming tenth season, Double Feature. Since his stellar performance as deranged Dandy Mott, Wittrock has shown he’s more than capable of standing shoulder to shoulder with series originals like Evan Peters and Sarah Paulson.

Finn Wittrock has played a variety of colorful characters across his American Horror Story career. Right from the off, Wittrock was able to gel effortlessly with the long-standing cast, so much so that it’s easy to forget he wasn’t there from the beginning. From Dandy through to Bobby, some of his characters have been the most captivating of their respective seasons while others have been simple bit-players.

5 Jether Polk (Roanoke)

American Horror Story Every Finn Wittrock Character Ranked

Jether is a member of the inbred Polk family in Roanoke who are overseen by the savage Mama Polk. Jether is one of the more sympathetic members of the family, having never killed another human, unlike his mother and siblings. That being said, when the family capture Monet, Lee, and Audrey, he does show a perverse interest in their suffering, going as far as to record the ordeal.

Unfortunately, Finn Wittrock’s talent is somewhat wasted in the role of Jether. Wittrock only appears in two episodes of the season and is far from a key player. Unlike some of his other characters, Jether lacks any real complexity or depth and as a result, Wittrock never really gets an opportunity to shine in Roanoke.

4 Bobby Richter II (1984)

After a two-season absence, 1984 saw Wittrock make an unexpected and triumphant return to the franchise. Through Bobby, the audience gains more understanding for his father, Benjamin (aka Mr. Jingles); the fact Benjamin names his child after his deceased brother, Bobby reflects his inner turmoil and guilt over his death.

In fact, Benjamin’s last line in the series is telling Bobby that he loves him, firmly confirming that he was never truly a villain (as we were first led to believe). Although the character of Bobby is certainly important, Wittrock only appears in one episode of 1984. With so little time on screen, Bobby is hardly one of the most memorable characters of season 9, let alone the franchise as a whole.

3 Rudolph Valentino (Hotel)

It may have become commonplace for actors to play multiple characters in a season of American Horror Story, but it was actually Finn Wittrock who did it first back in Hotel. Just as fans thought Wittrock’s role in Hotel had come to end (after Tristan’s tragic death), he showed up again as Valentino. Valentino was another ex-lover of The Countess (she certainly had a type) and was the one who first turned her. The backstory of The Countess, Valentino, and Natacha is one of the most interesting elements of Hotel as it was a unique twist on the usual love-triangle trope.

While a fairly small role, Valentino allows viewers to see a small glimpse of The Countess’ human side. It’s also through Valentino’s relationship with Natacha that they first witness The Countess’ jealously (which led to the undoing of the next character on this list). Unfortunately, not long after Valentino escapes his concrete prison at The Cortez he is shot dead by Donavan meaning Wittrock wasn’t given much chance to fully develop the character. Ultimately, Valentino is a plot device used to explore The Countess’ origins.

2 Tristan Duffy (Hotel)

Finn Wittrock’s first role in Hotel was Tristan Duffy, a narcissistic model turned vampire and one of Wittrock’s most complex and surprising characters. At the start of the season, the character seems one dimensional and is just one in a long line of The Countess’ lovers; but, after he develops a relationship with Liz Taylor, a softer and more caring side of Tristan emerges.

Tristan’s death is the most heartbreaking of Wittrock’s characters and his last line in the series (after reuniting with Liz) is one of Hotel’s most powerful. Wittrock’s sophomore year on the show proved his versatility as an actor and cemented his position within the American Horror Story family.

1 Dandy Mott (Freak Show)

Finn Wittrock’s most complex character in the franchise is Dandy Mott. Just like with most seasons of the show, Freak Show had many twists and turns; fans started off the season believing Twisty was the one to watch out for, only for Dandy to evolve into the true villain. Dandy is spoiled, demanding… and murderous.

When thinking about American Horror Story villains, it’s difficult to forget Dandy, especially after racking up one of the highest body counts in the franchise. Dandy is also Wittrock’s largest role on the show to date; across the season he progresses from an unruly and immature young man into a blood-thirsty killer. Dandy’s execution of the freaks is one of the scariest scenes from Freak Show, with this alone showcasing Finn Wittrock’s full range as a performer.
