Taylor Swift has taken the internet by storm with her re-recording of her Red album (Taylor’s Version). She also released a 10-minute short film for an extended version of her hit song, “All Too Well.”

Taylor is known for hiding cryptic messages in her lyrics, music videos, and even social media, so fans were quick to start dissecting the short film and looking at every last frame for hidden meaning. After doing their analysis, fans ran to different social media sites to share their theories about the film’s many Easter eggs.

10 The Book Release Scene

@intheswingoverthecreek on TikTok found meaning in the title card that read “Thirteen years gone,” which takes place right before the book signing in the short film. They go on to say that “All Too Well” was only released 10 years ago, which leaves three years unaccounted for. Furthermore, in an interview on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, Taylor said that she hints at things three years in advance.

All of this boils down to one theory: that Taylor Swift is going to release a book in three years, or 2025. Swifties everywhere would absolutely love a book from the singer. She’s an amazing storyteller, and would no doubt be able to come up with an amazing plot with lots of metaphor and symbolism.

9 The Cast’s Ages

Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien play the love interests in the “All Too Well” short film. This pairing may have made viewers a little uncomfortable, but according to @catquinn on TikTok, this was intentional. Sadie is 19 and Dylan is 29, which is very similar to Taylor and Jake Gyllenhaal’s age gap when they dated.

Furthermore, @catquinn posits that Sadie was an intentional choice because audiences have watched her grow up onscreen by following Max, who has one of the best character arcs on Stranger Things. Even though she’s an adult, she still feels young and less experienced than Dylan. This age gap works as an effective symbol for the power dynamic that a young woman would face against a man going into his 30s.

8 The Books Are All Turned Over

@jackbenedwards on Twitter was quick to point out that all of the books on Sadie’s nightstand for the montage of her in bed are turned over. He jokes, “theory; blondie turned all the books over in the ‘all too well’ short film because she knows i’m unhinged and would’ve read all of them.”

It’s true that Taylor knows her fans love sleuthing for Easter eggs in her videos and posts, and she’s even commented on some fan theories in the past. Taylor doesn’t do anything by accident and she wouldn’t want to leave a seemingly intricate detail that didn’t have a deeper meaning.

7 Taylor’s “13” Symbolism In The Form Of The Argument

After watching the short film a few times, @tatycake on TikTok noticed that the F-bomb was dropped quite a few times in the emotionally-driven argument scene between Sadie and Dylan. They had the idea to count the number of times it was said, and that number ended up being 13.

Fans familiar with Taylor’s music and personal life will know that her favorite number is 13. It’s even present in her appearance in one of Netflix’s greatest rom coms, Valentine’s Day, as her boyfriend’s jersey number. She sneaks 13s into her videos regularly and although it wasn’t visible in “All Too Well,” it was there, nonetheless.

6 The Casting Of “Him, Later On”

TikTok user @pablotaylorsboyfriend zoomed in on the credits and realized that Taylor cast a separate actor to play the back of Dylan’s character’s head in the “Thirteen Years Gone” segment. The actor’s name is Jake Lyon. They theorized that this could be a dig at Jake Gyllenhaal and his “lies.”

For such a simple shot where the man’s face isn’t even visible, it doesn’t make much sense to go through the trouble of casting a different actor. Taylor could have easily filmed the back of Dylan’s head and no one would have batted an eye. But, she purposefully used someone else with a very interesting name.

5 The Car Was A Mercedes 1989

🥚 | Taylor Swift commented on a TikTok confirming the ‘1989’ Easter Egg in the ‘All Too Well’ Short Film Trailer #RedTaylorsVersion — “Can’t stop won’t stop being cryptic and weird- that’s just the beginning it’s gonna be a fun week 😆😆😆😆” pic.twitter.com/AmKBKWju3B

There was a reference to the next possible re-recording and an ode to her 1989, one of Taylor’s best albums, according to Reddit. The Mercedes driven by the main characters in the short film was a 1989 Mercedes. This is also Taylor’s birth year.

The Easter eggs continue and go as far as the props used in the short film. Taylor never passes up an opportunity to give something more meaning, and she even acknowledged this Easter egg discovery on a fan’s video, saying that she can’t help but be weird and cryptic and to expect more Easter eggs to come.

4 The Light Colors In The Kitchen

Some movies have amazing color schemes that set the tone of the story. For the iconic lyric about dancing in the refrigerator light, “All Too Well” featured a dance sequence scene with Sadie and Dylan. As she spins around, the blue fridge light is cast over Dylan, and Sadie is bathed in the warm orange glow of sunlight from the window.

@offscreenwithjillian on TikTok theorized that this was supposed to be a visual representation of the characters’ personalities. The blue “cold” light is Dylan’s cool and distant demeanor, whereas Sadie has a “warm” glow. Taylor sings about how he never laughed at her jokes and wouldn’t call what they had love, implying he was pulled away and not as invested, treating her coldly.

3 The Book Cover Design

Many fans noticed a striking resemblance in the book that the character writes in “All Too Well” to the cover of “Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland.” Twitter user @arianaspovv even excitedly asked other fans if this was a purposeful Easter egg.

Other Swifties have corroborated their theory, pointing out Alice in Wonderland-esque language Taylor used in her Jimmy Fallon interview, like “down the rabbit hole” and “we’re all mad here,” in addition to roses being painted red in the “I Bet You Think About Me” video, one of the songs from the vault fans were excited to hear re-recorded.

2 A Freeze Frame Of The New Album Cover

One TikToker, @thisisabbytryin, found an interesting Easter egg that’s visible if viewers freeze the music video when Sadie looks out the car window as Dylan is yelling on the phone: a perfect recreation of the new Red album cover.

This Easter egg may seem far-fetched, but it’s more exact than it seems. Upon further investigation, the image of Taylor looking back out of a car window lays exactly over Sadie’s profile in perfect ratios when rotated slightly. Taylor loves symbolism and imagery, so this hidden detail is no accident.

1 Sadie’s Full Wine Glass

@rainabaig on TikTok pointed out that there’s a very minute but important detail in the dinner scene of the “All Too Well” short film. As the cameras pan around to Dylan and his friends laughing and talking, almost everyone’s wine glasses are half or completely empty, except for Sadie’s.

Taylor really wanted to hammer home the idea of the age and maturity imbalance between Sadie and Dylan. The message is that Sadie’s not even old enough to drink, but is still being served like she’s an adult, even though she’s not ready for that step and hasn’t touched the wine.
