Fantasy worlds are what make many movies so fun, but from Harry Potter to Hunger Games, which imaginary film universes make no sense?

10 Fantasy Movie Universes That Make No Sense

As fans of the fantasy genre will attest, one of the greatest sources of pleasure that it offers is the opportunity for the reader or viewer to simply immerse themselves in an alternate reality, a world that doesn’t follow the rules of the one that people usually live in. Most often, it’s their internal consistency that grants these alternative universes their immersive nature, and many fans spend quite a lot of time exploring the various rules that govern these spaces.

However, there are a few fantasy worlds out there that, while very entertaining and immersive, also don’t make a lot of sense under closer examination.

10 The Wizarding World

Obviously, there’s a lot about Harry Potter that’s based on British culture, and so it makes sense that it would have things like schools where witches and wizards go to train.

What makes less sense, however, is the relationship between the wizarding world and the Muggle one, and how easily the latter seems willing to either let themselves be spelled into forgetfulness or simply to explain things rationally. One also can’t help but wonder why they didn’t just do away with wizards and witches altogether, considering how dangerous they clearly were (and considering how unpleasant some of the Muggles were).

9 Toy Story

There’s so much to love about the Toy Story universe, and in some ways it’s the best Pixar universe. After all, quite a few people have no doubt imagined what it would be like if their toys had their own world and their own way of living.

However, the universe also raises a whole host of questions. Most problematically, perhaps, it begs the question: what happens to the literally millions of other toys that children get? Are they all possessed of consciousness? And if they are, wouldn’t that be rather overwhelming after a while?

8 Oz

Given that the books and the films mostly came out before the advent of major fantasy franchises that spend a great deal of time fleshing out their own internal universes, it was probably inevitable that the various iterations of The Wizard of Oz would seem so haphazard and disconnected (and would spawn so many fan theories).

Even so, it’s a universe that, frankly, doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense. In all of the various film iterations, for example, things seem to change a remarkably great deal considering that not that much time has passed. It’s not exactly coherent.

7 Big Fish

10 Fantasy Movie Universes That Make No Sense

This fantasy film by Tim Burton is undeniably charming, focusing as it does on the fraught relationship between a father and a son and their eventual reconciliation. However, what makes less sense is the way in which the universe seems to be set up.

The father talks about all sorts of fantastical things that are clearly understood by the film to be tall tales, yet in the end of the film they end up being real. It’s something that doesn’t quite add up, either in narrative terms or in terms of the building of the universe.

6 Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

10 Fantasy Movie Universes That Make No Sense

The world of Willy Wonka is one of the most charming and terrifying ever to appear in a children’s fantasy movie. While it’s easy to get caught up in the fantastical elements of the story, it’s also worth pointing out that there’s a lot about this particular fantasy universe that doesn’t make sense.

It’s especially jarring to see the fantastical elements of the story juxtaposed to the supposedly normal world that exists outside of the chocolate factory.

5 Jumanji

10 Fantasy Movie Universes That Make No Sense

Jumanji is another of those films that has become a classic, a status reinforced by the subsequent reboot. However, as fun as it is to watch and get caught up in the action and adventure, it is rather puzzling that no one who isn’t playing the game seems to notice any of the weird stuff going on.

This is clearly one of those instances where the writers were focused more on entertaining the viewer than on creating any internal consistency.

4 Wonderland

10 Fantasy Movie Universes That Make No Sense

Anyone who has seen any of the various iterations of this story knows that there’s quite a lot about this universe that simply doesn’t make sense. Of course, that’s really part of the point, isn’t it, that Alice is immersed in a world that is all topsy-turvy from what she’s expected?

Nevertheless, many viewers, particularly those who are fans of the epic fantasy genre, no doubt find several aspects of these stories more than a little frustrating and bewildering.

3 Maleficent

10 Fantasy Movie Universes That Make No Sense

At first blush, it might have seemed a good idea to give Maleficent, one of Disney’s greatest villainous creations, her own backstory.

However, the film (and its sequel) have a very bizarre sort of mythology. The first one is particularly egregious in this regard, and while it clearly wants to partake of epic fantasy, it doesn’t really follow the rules of helping the viewer understand this universe. As a result, it all starts to feel like a jumble, and the sequel doesn’t really help to clarify things. Unfortunately, neither film is among the better remakes.

2 Panem

10 Fantasy Movie Universes That Make No Sense

Panem is, of course, the setting for the hugely popular Hunger Games, one of the best dystopian fictions out there. While it’s a truly rousing story about resistance to tyranny and exploitation, beneath the surface one sees a lot of stuff that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense by even the most meager of standards.

For example, why are they still mining coal, when so much of the rest of this world seems so technologically advanced? For that matter, how is it possible that everyone seems to be so complacent and willing to buy into the government’s line, and yet there are also rebels involved in the Games from the first? It just doesn’t add up.

1 Toontown

Toontown, of course, is the setting for Who Framed Roger Rabbit? It’s a fascinating sort of fantasy world, to be sure, with all sorts of animated figures running around and interacting with humans. However, that in itself doesn’t make sense.

For that matter, how is it possible for this entire world to be so infested with crime? Sure, it’s a mostly animated film that wants viewers to just enjoy the show, but even so, it frequently veers into totally nonsensical territory.
