10 Friends Storylines That Could Also Have Been Seinfeld Storylines

Both Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld felt that Friends copied Seinfeld and there were definitely a few Friends storylines that felt very Seinfeld-ish.

Friends and Seinfeld are two of the most famous New York City-set shows and were massively popular in their own ways. However, over the years, many viewers, including Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David, have said they have always felt that Friends was a ripoff of their show. They were both set in New York, both had a frequent hangout and much of the humor was derived from relationships. As Jerry put it, “it’s like Seinfeld with better-looking people.”

There are many Friends episodes that seem to borrow many of Seinfeld’s scenarios and there are also episodes that feature plots similar to the ones that could be found on Seinfeld, or, some might even feel are more appropriate for Seinfeld. This could be humor over life’s minutia, wacky character schemes, or, simply, the friends sharing the Seinfeld characters’ glaring traits.

10 Joey Gets Battered – Kramer

Perhaps of all the relationship problems the four had on Seinfeld, Kramer’s were the weirdest. He once dated a “low talker” that no one could hear and a woman even had his sleeping body dumped in the river when she thought he was dead.

In “The One with the Girl Who Hits Joey,” Joey’s new girlfriend (Soleil Moon Frye) hits him, not in an abusive way, but in a playful way, and her love tap packs a mean punch. She hurts him so badly he ends up putting padding under his clothes to escape the pain. Kramer could easily be seen doing this to either save his relationship or to protect himself during a breakup, just in case it gets worse when, as to paraphrase Joey, he’s gotta “take away the [Kramer] love.”

9 Ross Dates A Dirty Girl – Jerry

Jerry was always known as a neat freak on Seinfeld and, in one episode, he became freaked out when he discovered something in his apartment had been in the toilet. In “The One With The Dirty Girl,” Ross dates an impossibly beautiful woman (Rebecca Romijn) who he discovers is also a complete slob.

This seems more like a Jerry problem than a Ross problem. Relationship problem storylines work best when the character’s partner has a trait at odds with their own. Ross was never known as a neat freak, but one could easily imagine Jerry trying to make out with this woman on a trash-filled couch and even, as Monica does at the end of the episode, asking if he could clean it for her.

8 Joey’s Hand Twin – Kramer

Kramer was often known for his get-rich-quick schemes, like the bottle deposit scam, the coffee table book about coffee tables, or trying to get $100 from a bank because they didn’t greet him with a “hello.”

Similarly-wacky Joey had a few bizarre, get-rich-quick schemes of his own. In “The One After Vegas,” Joey believes a casino dealer has his exact hand type and tries to convince him they could make money being “identical hand twins.” At this point in the show, Friends was taking Joey’s dim-witted nature to a whole other level and this fits more in line with something Kramer would do. After all, he always seemed to pride himself on his ability to see things others didn’t.

7 Rachel And The Inappropriate Sister – Elaine

Elaine had her fair share of relationship woes on Seinfeld and they often ended for ridiculous reasons, such as her boyfriend being too nice to Jerry’s parents. In “The One With The Inappropriate Sister,” Rachel meets the sister of her boyfriend, Danny.

Unfortunately, Danny and his extremely close relationship with his sister bothers Rachel after she witnesses them wrestle around with each other. In the end, it’s implied that the two are even taking a bath together. This is easily a situation Elaine could feel threatened by and would rather just end to avoid any further awkwardness.

6 Ross Can’t Flirt – George

George was never the smoothest guy. While he did date many beautiful women, he lacked Jerry’s wit and natural charm. In “The One Where Ross Can’t Flirt,” Ross finds himself attracted to the pizza delivery woman, however, every chance he has to flirt with her, he makes a fool out of himself. Furthermore, he’s angered when witty Chandler swoops in to quell the awkward moment with a funny joke.

Woman-repellant George could easily find himself in a similar situation and, because he’s also so easily slighted, he would also probably feel angered if the more socially-capable Jerry swooped in afterward.

5 Chandler’s Hypnosis Tape – Kramer

On Seinfeld, Kramer always had ways to improve himself that went array, such as only sleeping a few minutes at a time, or using butter to shave. In “The One With The Hypnosis Tape,” Chandler uses a hypnosis tape to help him quit smoking. Unfortunately, the tape is intended for women and, so, he begins to acquire “female” traits, like commenting on other women’s blouses and even wearing his towel around his head as if he had long hair.

It’s a bizarre premise for Friends, but not out of the realm of possibility for Kramer, as this is a scenario that could easily be seen backfiring on him and it’s similar to the time when Kramer took over Jerry’s apartment and he began acting like Jerry.

4 Monica & “Fun Bobby” – Elaine

Like the men on the show, Elaine often had problems with her boyfriends to the point where she wanted to change them and it always ended in disaster. These incidents include when she wanted her boyfriend to change his name because it was the same as a serial killer’s, or when she asked her swimmer boyfriend to grow his hair, only to discover that he’s going bald.

In “The One With Russ,” Monica worries that her boyfriend, “Fun Bobby,” has a dependence on alcohol, so she encourages him to quit drinking. Unfortunately, she soon discovers he was only “Fun Bobby” because he drank and now he’s as Chandler says, “Ridiculously Dull Bobby.” Sober Bobby ends up breaking up with Monica because she starts drinking to deal with him being so boring. Elaine could have engineered something like this and, ultimately, her selfish ways would cause it to backfire.

3 Ross’s Skin Thing – George

On Seinfeld, George was always worried about something medical killing him. Whether it’s cancer or lupus, he was always afraid a medical issue could do him in. He even consulted a holistic healer once to get rid of his tonsils, as opposed to surgery, which, of course, just made everything worse.

In “The One With Ross’ Thing,” Ross has a mysterious skin condition on his back that he seeks out a herbalist for, Guru Saj. Again, this doesn’t really fit with his character, but something George would do. In one of his stand-up bits on Seinfeld, Jerry states that you never want something that makes the other doctors say, “Well, I have to see this,” which is exactly what happens on Friends when Ross finds himself in a room filled with perplexed doctors standing around looking at his mysterious condition.

2 Chandler Pretends To Be Toby – Jerry

Jerry Seinfeld was a very vain person who enjoyed being liked and was irked when people didn’t like him. In “The One With Rachel’s Date,” it’s discovered that Chandler’s co-worker has been calling him Toby for many years and he hasn’t corrected him, only to realize that the co-worker hates “Chandler,” so now Chandler doesn’t want to admit that’s actually him.

Because of Jerry’s vanity and desire to be liked, it easy to imagine Jerry going to extraordinary lengths to conceal his identity in order to remain in someone’s good graces.

1 The One Where No One’s Ready – All

Seinfeld was famous for often having what is known as “bottle episodes,” meaning the entire episode takes place in one location. Seinfeld became famous for them over the years and would do one, seemingly, every season. Friends employed this a few times, but most notably in “The One Where No One’s Ready,” where Ross arrives at Monica and Rachel’s expecting everyone to be ready to attend his big event. However, no one is, and the entire episode becomes a struggle to get them to leave.

This is uniquely Seinfeld, as this play-like episode will remind viewers of classic episodes like “The Chinese Restaurant” or “The Parking Garage.”
