Known as one of the most thrilling shows on television to date, 9-1-1 follows both the ups and downs of the lives of first responders, police officers, paramedics, firefighters, and dispatchers in Los Angeles. With every episode starting off with the line, “9-1-1, what’s your emergency?” that simple question opens the doors for late-night TV audiences to learn about a day in the life of some of the most dedicated protectors around.

10 Athena Grant is the only character on 9-1-1 who has appeared in every episode

Created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, 9-1-1 is already in its third season, and believe it or not, Angela Bassett has played her character, Athena Grant on every single episode since.

What’s special and exciting about 9-1-1 as a series is that it follows the lives of several first responders in LA, sometimes weaving in and out of different character’s stories. However, for Athena Grant, that’s not the case. Grant is the powerful force behind many of the team’s successful rescue missions and life-saving accomplishments. It’s only fitting that she remains in every episode to do her duty.

9 Grant was meant to be a detective, not a police officer.

While the show’s creators haven’t yet confirmed the backstory behind this interesting Athena Grant detail, multiple press releases that were sent out just before the show’s pilot in January of 2018 stated that Grant was, in fact, listed on the character sheet as a detective.

It’s a little crazy to think that the hard-working, brave, and honest police officer we’ve all come to admire on the show might have actually been a detective in the early days of the show’s development. Until the members of the creative team or Angela Bassett, herself, can let us know, we’ll just remain grateful that Athena Grant is the inspiring officer we already know.

8 Grant’s badge number has a special meaning.

Growing up in St. Petersburg, Flordia, a very young Angela Bassett once dreamed of two things. The first was to marry a member of The Jackson 5. The second was to entertain. Early on in her childhood, Bassett fell in love with performing and would often put on shows for her family. As an ode to her upbringing and her own town, there’s an awesome little detail on 9-1-1 that really calls out to her roots.

On the show, Athena Grant’s police officer badge is numbered 1275. This number is a reference to the I-275 freeway that runs through St. Petersburg, Florida. If you pay real close attention to some of the show’s scenes, you’ll also spot that Grant’s unit number begins with 727- the St. Petersburg phone area code.

7 Bassett met with a real LA lieutenant to truly understand her role.

9-1-1 isn’t your fairytale, drama-filled show. It’s the good kind of a thrill-seeking cop show with twists, turns, and action. The show’s creative team makes it their mission to try to convey each scene as close to reality as possible. In order to do that, however, the actors have to tap into character portrayal even deeper.

To prepare for her role as a police sergeant (a role that she had never played before), Angela Bassett met with a real Los Angeles lieutenant to learn about what it takes – physically, mentally, and emotionally – to be a leading officer in her line of duty.

6 Bassett is an Executive Producer on the show.

What many fans of the show may not realize (unless you’re really paying attention to the credits on screen) is that Angela Bassett is not only the leading actress on the show but also an executive producer. This has given her the opportunity to tap into her character’s entire story a little more than the rest of her co-stars.

“Because I came on as an EP,” says Bassett, “I was able to have a different sort of relationship this time around, able to be in communication about, does this ring true about my character?” Being in the writer’s room and around the show’s early development helped her truly understand the part she was going to bring to life on screen.

5 Basset doesn’t think she could be a real-life police officer.

After now spending three seasons staying fit and committing to a role that requires a character of strength, bravery, and self-motivation, Bassett has revealed that if she wasn’t an actress, she definitely could not be a 9-1-1 dispatcher.

“I’d imagine it’s very stressful, all the screaming and crying and trying to keep them calm on the other end,” she revealed. “I think you’d have to have answers for all the crazy stuff going on.” Luckily for her, Bassett doesn’t have to. She is all-in for Athena Grant anyway, constantly monitoring her health and staying focused for the part she really does play.

4 Some scenes on the show actually gross her out!

It wouldn’t be a cop show if there wasn’t blood, right? Some of the situations that the 9-1-1 team finds themselves in can actually be a bit gruesome. (If you’re a squeamish person, maybe skip this show!) Though captivating and sometimes heartbreaking, Bassett has said herself that sometimes even she can’t handle some of the horrifying scenes on the show.

In one of the show’s episodes that involved a tragic motorcycle crash, Bassett said, “That one was pretty rough. You know it’s all smoke and mirrors, but you’re still like, ‘I hope they just made this up.'” Thanks to the magic of Hollywood, some scenes look a little too real.

3 Basset wanted to be a pediatrician when she grew up – not a cop!

Before Bassett had dreamed of becoming an actress or ever working in the entertainment industry, she wanted to be a pediatrician. Inspired by her mother, she thought about becoming a “baby doctor,” was the career path she wanted to take. However, when she got to college and learned she had to take science courses looking closely at blood and body parts and even cadavers, she changed her mind and dedicated her life to acting.

Funnily enough, she’s now landed a role where she still has to see and deal with all of that!

2 Basset says the show keeps her active.

Different from some of her other acting credits, 9-1-1 is a heavily action-packed show, and Bassett loves that about her series! “Since “Since I’m not 21, there’s some, ‘Let me get to the gym so I can do it,'” she says about how the show keeps her in her best shape. Dedicating time to training and fitness helps Bassett play her character in the most truthful way.

However, she doesn’t do it to pretend she’s someone she’s not. “I love to defy expectations,” she reveals, “I want people to see this is what 59 can look like, what 59 can do.”

Winner of the AAFCA Award for Best Female Performance for her role of Athena Grant, Bassett has shared anecdotes of young girls letting her know Grant has inspired them to pursue a career in public service when they’re older.
