10 Funniest Running Gags On ABC’s The Middle
The Middle, like most popular sitcoms, had running gags throughout its run. Some were downright hilarious each time they happened.

In the world of family sitcoms, ABC’s The Middle is truly an underrated gem. Week after week since the premiere way back in 2009, fans tuned in to catch up with the Hecks in Orson, Indiana, and see what shenanigans they found themselves stuck in this time around.
In addition, to making fans laugh and occasionally cry, The Middle also rewarded its most loyal fans with several inside jokes and funny gags along the way. They were great ways for those who watched consistently to see callbacks to the past. After all, if there was one thing the Hecks were good for, it’s “Heck-ing” things up.
10 The Hole In Sue’s Room
Everyone knows the Hecks’s house isn’t the most well-kept on the block but giant holes in rooms is a bit much even for them. And yet, that doesn’t stop the hole in Sue’s bedroom from appearing time and time again.
The hole’s origin story begins in season 2 when Sue and Brick are throwing things against the wall to annoy Axl and his robot baby for school. They try to fix the hole but end up making another one in season 4. By season 8, an even bigger hole emerges causing Sue, Brick, and Axl to fix the entire wall themselves.
9 Losing The Snack Bag
The Hecks may not have left their home in Orson many times over the course of the nine seasons, but when they did go on vacation, it was always an adventure. Especially for their trusty snack bag.
The snack bag makes its first appearance in season one when Frankie accidentally leaves it at home while going on a road trip for Brick’s spelling bee. From there it’s all downhill for the snack bag – which changes colors once it as been lost for good. It gets forgotten on the trip to New York, thrown off the car while camping, left in Orlando, and even run over.
8 The Death Napkin
While many families have a will detailing who would take care of the children if anything were to happen to them, Mike and Frankie have a less abiding will written on the napkin of a local restaurant.
The “Death Napkin” is talked about a lot over the course of The Middle’s nine-season run but is only actually shown once during the season 4 episode “The Sinkhole.” Every time it’s brought up, Sue breaks down not wanting to think of what life would be like without her parents while Axl fantasizes about being the one in charge if his parents were to die after he turned 18.
7 Brick’s Obsession With Planet Nowhere
As the youngest child, Brick often gets overlooked or forgotten altogether. His invisibility in his family is what drove him to his love of books, most notably the Planet Nowhere series.
Over the course of the show, fans get to see Brick’s love of Planet Nowhere grow and evolve. Brick’s obsession over the books drags his family to conventions and he almost breaks up with his girlfriend for not being a fan. That’s not to mention his epic breakdowns when Axl spoils the final book and Brick learns they’re making a movie that gets all the details of the book wrong.
6 Sue Constantly Trying Out For Things
Sue is definitely the go-getter of the Heck family. No matter how many times life knocks her down, and it’s a lot, she just keeps getting back up and tries again.
Sue’s constant need to try out for things has been a running gag on the series since the pilot where she failed to make show choir and instead was put on the stage crew. Since then, Sue tried out for cheerleading, cross country, volleyball, plays, tennis, and several other clubs/sporting teams.
5 The Oven Quilt
The Hecks live in a pretty cluttered house, meaning they sometimes store things in places that aren’t practical. That includes Frankie’s Aunt Pearl’s heirloom quilt that resides in their kitchen oven.
One of the earliest appearances from the quilt is when Brick stays home alone and burns it after turning on the oven to make pizza rules. The quilt goes on to be burned several times since no one ever remembers to take it out of the oven. But occasionally, it saves the day like when it is used to soak up water from the exploding dishwasher.
4 “Protect The TV!”
The Hecks might love each other but they definitely love their television way more. In fact, they love television so much that it became a running gag of its own on The Middle, especially when it came to protecting it.
When the roof started leaking from the rain, the family was willing to sacrifice their family pictures to save the TV. They also chose to protect it first when the dishwasher was spewing water all over the place. And when Frankie and Mike got rid of cable, well, there was almost a family war.
3 Brick’s Lawn Chair
Family dinner time is important in many households and it’s something Frankie tries to establish early on in season 1. The only problem is, the Hecks haven’t had a family dinner since Brick was born and don’t have a proper dining room chair for him. Thus, Brick’s lawn chair is born.
Brick’s lawn chair provides several laughs over the years as Brick takes pride in it. Even when Axl tries to convince him that his weird quirks stem back to not having a proper chair at the table, Brick stays faithful to his beloved lawn chair.
2 Axl Always In His Underwear
Axl may be the eldest Heck sibling but he’s definitely not the most reliable. In fact, Axl is quite lazy, opting to spend the day lying around in his underwear over doing anything productive.
Axl’s need to strip into his underwear the minute he walks through the door becomes a running gag on The Middle early on. And while Axl’s underwear habits might dwindle when he starts college, it comes back full circle when he becomes a parent to three sons who also share his affinity to lounging around semi-nude.
1 Sue’s Braces
Sue’s constant need to try out for things isn’t the only running gag that centers around her. In fact, she has an even better own revolving around her teeth.
Sue spends most of the show dealing with highs and lows of braces thanks to her underbite/overbite. From missing classes and getting made to wear headgear to finally getting them off only for her teeth to start shifting again, Sue’s teeth have an emotional arc of their own.
