Don’t Breathe 2 was the long-awaited sequel to the 2016 movie which was finally released earlier this year. After the first movie, there were many obvious directions for the sequel to take, most of which would involve The Blind Man exacting more terror on unsuspecting “victims.” However, the direction the movie actually took was certainly unexpected and unpredictable.

Don’t Breathe 2 was a horror movie with plot twists at every turn, some of which worked better than others. With all these shocking developments, viewers were left with many unanswered questions by the end of the movie.

10 Were The Police Looking For Phoenix?

Following the fire which destroyed her home, The Blind Man took Tara with him and raised her as “Phoenix.” However, there are never any hints that the police were ever looking for her.

Although she didn’t have the best upbringing, the police would surely be concerned about the welfare of a missing child. Even if her parents weren’t looking for her, other people in the neighborhood would know she was missing which would certainly raise questions. It seems strange that no one official seemed to be looking for Phoenix, especially as her body wouldn’t have been found in the wreckage.

9 Why Didn’t The Blind Man Move Further Away?

Throughout the first movie, The Blind Man is shown to be highly skilled and intelligent. That being said, when Hernandez takes Phoenix out, they visit her old house which means The Blind Man stayed close by after taking her.

While no one seemed to be looking for her, he didn’t know this and risked a lot by staying so close by. Although he did try to restrict how much she went outside, this seemed to be out of paranoia for her safety more than anything else. Knowing just how intelligent and meticulous the character is, it’s odd that The Blind Man did so little to cover his tracks.

8 Why Did No One Recognize Phoenix?

The first Don’t Breathe movie featured one of the most shocking horror movie plot twists when the woman in The Blind Man’s basement was revealed. The sequel also featured several twists and the coloring of Phoenix’s hair played a huge part in one of these.

Phoenix had a grey streak in her hair which she shared with her father, and this is how he proved himself to her after breaking into The Blind Man’s house. It is referenced several times that this is a unique trait that she has inherited from her birth family. As Phoenix was leaving the house and stayed close by, it’s surprising that no one in town noticed her unique hair sooner and pieced this together with the missing child from the fire.

7 Why Didn’t The Blind Man Dye Phoenix’s Hair?

Considering the previous questions, The Blind Man would surely have dyed Phoenix’s hair. As her hair is so unique and would be a clear identifier, it seems strange that her kidnapper let her keep it.

Towards the beginning of the film, Phoenix and The Blind Man openly discuss this unique trait so he clearly knew she had it. Even if he’d only discovered this years later when Phoenix herself was able to ask about it, it’s out of character for The Blind Man not to cover his tracks. After all, he had essentially kidnapped Phoenix so allowing her to go out undisguised seems particularly unwise.

6 Who Was Hernandez?

Hernandez is a former US army ranger and was shown to have a connection to The Blind Man and Phoenix when she was introduced in the movie. As The Blind Man is a military veteran, her connection to him may span from this but it is never explained.

The Blind Man trusts Hernandez enough to take Phoenix out which is particularly risky considering the child’s background. He has always been shown to be an isolated character so an explanation for his relationship with Hernandez felt needed. Also, the character serves little purpose as she is killed fairly quickly after first appearing.

5 Why Did Raylan Let Phoenix Leave The Bathroom?

Towards the beginning of the movie, Phoenix is startled in the bathroom by Raylan. Considering the way he acts with her here, it’s likely he knew who she was so it seems strange that he wouldn’t try and explain himself.

While Phoenix may not have believed a full explanation from him there and then, he could have easily taken her right away. Of course, Shadow was standing guard but viewers are shown later that Raylan doesn’t fear dogs. While the original Don’t Breathe was one of the best home invasion movies, this tactic seems rather elaborate for Raylan and his gang here as he could have taken Phoenix when he first met her in the bathroom.

4 Why Were The Gang So Rough With Phoenix?

When Raylan’s gang come to take Phoenix, they are extremely forceful in their approach and even use violence against her. Considering the real reason Phoenix’s parents wanted her back, the gang surely wouldn’t have risked hurting Phoenix.

It’s clear the gang know who Phoenix is, why she is needed and how they will benefit from her kidnap. However, one of the gang members almost drowns her and another knocks her out. The gang being so violent towards Phoenix seems odd when she was needed by them for her heart.

3 Why Was The Blind Man The Protagonist?

Although the main characters in the first movie were breaking into his house, it was clear early into the movie that The Blind Man was the antagonist. The twist towards of the movie with the woman locked in his basement also solidified this and showed just how disgusting he really was.

The second movie seems determined to show The Blind Man as an anti-hero, and at times even the protagonist. There are some horror movie villains that could be redeemed, but The Blind Man certainly isn’t one of them. Problematically, Don’t Breathe 2 tries to show this murderous abuser as a strong parental figure, suggesting he gave Phoenix a much better life than she would have had with her real family.

2 What Did Phoenix Tell The Shelter?

At the end of the movie, Phoenix is seen entering a shelter/children’s home. She does seem to be welcomed by the other children when she arrives but any adults there would surely have questions for her.

Phoenix is certainly intelligent child enough to know she couldn’t tell the truth about her origins. However, it would have been fun to see her try to explain all the bizzare things that had happened to her which led her to the shelter. It seems likely that social services would have a number of questions for Phoenix considering her young age.

1 Is The Blind Man Really Dead?

Having Raylan “kill” The Blind Man at the end of the movie seems like a strange narrative choice. Having Phoenix take out her captor, before going off alone would have been a much more satisfying ending for the villain.

The first Don’t Breathe movie ended with one of the most blatant horror movie sequel hooks but it seemed like the sequel would be different. However, viewers who hung around long enough would have seen a mid-credits scene showing The Blind Man’s fingers twitch. This scene would indicate that The Blind Man isn’t dead after all and producers are hoping for another sequel.
