Having only been launched in May 2020, HBO Max is a relatively new content streaming service that is determined to pick up the pace. Upon launch, the service proudly offered some of the most popular movies from recent decades, including The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.
At the same time, it also added several hit 90s TV shows, including sitcoms Friends and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Aside from these, the service also offers some incredible drama shows that we simply can’t get enough of.
10 Industry – 6.8
This HBO drama follows a group of young graduates who are trying to secure permanent positions at a prestigious London bank. It’s a show that was inspired by show creators, Konrad Kay and Mickey Down’s, real lives.
Down told Decider that the duo had always “been obsessed with writing a London-based relationship drama about people in their early-to-mid 20s.” The show’s cast includes Ken Leung, Marisa Abela, David Jonsson, and Myha’la Herrold. Industry has already been renewed for a second season.
9 Lovecraft Country – 7.1
Based on a novel by Matt Ruff and set in the 1950s, this drama centers on a man named Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) who decides to go on a road trip with his friend, Letitia (Jurnee Smollett), and Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance), to search for his missing father.
The trip, however, is not as simple as it sounds. Along the way, the group deals with racists and some incredibly scary creatures. Fans have noted that the show deviates from the book in some ways, but nonetheless, Lovecraft Country has received a lot of critical praise.
8 The Alienist – 7.7
Also based on a book, this psychological thriller centers on a criminal psychologist and newspaper illustrator who had been asked by the newly appointed New York City police commissioner to investigate a string of gruesome murders in secret.
And if the cast seems familiar to fans, it’s because they have appeared in various films in the past. These actors include Dakota Fanning, who recently starred in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Luke Evans, who portrayed Gaston in the live-action version of Beauty and the Beast.
7 His Dark Materials – 7.9
His Dark Materials tells the story of a young woman from another world named Lyra (Dafne Keen), whose quest to find a kidnapped friend leads to the discovery of a secret organization with sinister plans, among other things. Keen told Deadline that she joined the show because she wanted to tell stories that “make people think or make them at least unconsciously try to be better people.”
Since the show started airing in 2019, we’ve also seen Keen’s Lyra at the center of some of the show’s most heartbreaking moments. The show also stars Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

In this HBO drama, masked vigilantes are viewed as criminals. Throughout the show, we also come to learn these characters have varied abilities, making some more dangerous than others. Among the fiercest is Regina King’s Detective Angela Abar, who decides to adopt the identity of Sister Night as she fights off racists in the community.
Of her portrayal of the role, King was happy to “create [her] own thing” even if the show is inspired by a comic book. She told The Beat, “I just got to make her this badass chick.”
5 The Deuce – 8.1
The Deuce is a semi-fictional show that traces the origins of the pornography industry back to the 1970s in New York’s Time Square. The show stars James Franco, who portrays twins Vincent and Frankie. These roles are based on real-life twin brothers who owned a bar in Times Square at that time.
Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal plays a sex worker who goes by the alias “Candy.” Following sexual allegations against Franco, there was talk of removing him from the show. However, Gyllenhaal told Vulture, “I felt that it would have been a terrible shame to stop telling that story.”
4 I Know This Much Is True – 8.2
This recent drama series stars Mark Ruffalo, who also plays identical twin brothers: one is a divorced housepainter, while the other is a schizophrenic that needs to be cared for by his sibling.
To make this possible, the show brought in actor Gabe Fazio, who would act opposite Ruffalo during his scenes. While speaking with GQ, Ruffalo explained, “And that was probably one of the most essential things and why it worked as well as it does and why it really does feel like two different, breathing, emotionally complex people …”

This HBO show centers around high school students who are dealing with tough issues, such as violence, sex, and drugs. The cast includes Zendaya, who stands out for her portrayal of Rue Bennett, a young lesbian woman who is dealing with drug addiction.
For Zendaya’s fans, seeing her portray such a dark character is such a stark contrast to the characters she’s played in the past. Despite this, the actress finds that she is able to relate with Rue, telling The New York Times, “I feel like she’s a version of myself with different choices and circumstances.”

Created by David E. Kelley, this hit HBO drama centers on the beachfront town of Monterey, California, where five women find themselves wrapped up in a murder. Little did these women also know that their lives are intertwined more than they could imagine.
The show’s cast is led by Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, who also serve as executive producers on the show. The women are also joined by Shailene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz, and Oscar winner Laura Dern. They were also joined by Oscar winner Meryl Streep during the second season, in which she played Kidman’s cunning mother-in-law.

This mini-series offers a gritty look into the drug scene that has swept Baltimore, along with other critical issues that have plagued the area. The Wire was created by David Simon, who once served as a news reporter, and the show’s cast includes Idris Elba, Dominic West, Lance Reddick, and Sonja Sohn.
The Wire ran for five seasons and earned two Emmy nominations. Regarding the possibility of a sixth season, the show’s creator, David Simon, told The Atlantic that he is “prepared to go to work on season six” if the U.S. ends its war on drugs.
