10 Hidden Gems On Disney+ For Adults
Contents
Disney+ may have a lot of content for children but there are some great movies aimed at adults that you didn’t know were even available.

The big hits on Disney+ are the ones everyone talks about. The animated classics from the company, the Star Wars franchise they acquired when they purchased Lucasfilm, everything related to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the wonderful works of Pixar Studios, just to name a few.
Of course, that’s just the tip of the iceberg on the streaming service. While most of the catalog seems designed for younger audiences, there is plenty for adults to enjoy. Aside from the obvious stuff in the worlds of superheroes and space operas, Disney+ offers up a handful of enjoyable movies that most subscribers might not even realize are available.
10 Never Been Kissed
A lot of these entries come from 20th Century Fox. Disney’s acquisition of them opened the doors for some unexpected movies and TV shows to be added to the streaming service. Recently, one of those was Never Been Kissed, a delightful comedy-drama released in 1999.
This was one of the movies that helped make Drew Barrymore into a major star again. She stars as a reporter who has never had a true relationship and is forced to go back to high school undercover for a story. This also features John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon, and the debut of James Franco.
9 While You Were Sleeping
Didn’t it seem like Sandra Bullock was kind of everything during the ’90s? That was certainly the case again in 1995 when she took on the lead role of Lucy Eleanor Moderatz in While You Were Sleeping. She shined alongside the likes of Bill Pullman and Peter Gallagher.
While You Were Sleeping follows hopeless romantic Lucy, who has a crush on a commuter she sees daily. When she saves his life and he ends up in a coma, she is mistaken for his fiancée and doesn’t correct anyone, putting herself into a wacky situation.
8 The Finest Hours
It’s not often that Disney makes a film that ends up bombing at the box office. However, it happens from time to time, especially with the things more aimed towards an adult crowd. That’s just the audience that The Finest House was designed for.
Released in 2016, The Finest Hours is based on a novel. It tells the true story of the 1952 United States Coast Guard rescue of the SS Pendleton. It was considered the Coast Guard’s “most daring rescue.” The film stars Chris Pine, Casey Affleck, Eric Bana, and Ben Foster. The reviews were strong even if the box office wasn’t.
7 John Carter
For the most part, people look at John Carter and immediately think that it’s a bad movie. That’s because it grossed just $284.1 million on a reported $306.6 million budget, making it one of the biggest box office bombs in history. However, it’s much better from a critical standpoint.
Starring the talented Taylor Kitsch as the titular character, this 2012 sci-fi epic tells the tale of Carter as he attempts to stop a civil war among many kingdoms. Despite the fact that it was a commercial failure, most reviews consider it to be quite solid. Alas, the planned trilogy was canceled.
6 Invincible
It’s not often that Disney dabbles in the world of sports. However, they did just that when they released Invincible in 2006. The film was led by the consistently strong Mark Wahlberg and had a supporting cast that featured Elizabeth Banks and Greg Kinnear.
The film tells the story of Vince Papale (Wahlberg), a lifelong supporter of the Philadelphia Eagles who makes the team following a fan tryout session. He plays there in the late ’70s and becomes a favorite of his coach and those who attend the games due to his hard play.
5 The Fault In Our Stars
This is another one of those movies that people probably didn’t realize was currently on Disney+. While it was a pretty big hit, it isn’t an original Disney film, so it’s not something you’d expect to see on the streaming service. That being said, it’s one of the better movies available.
The Fault in Our Stars, released in 2014, grossed $307.2 million on a $12 million budget. Based on a book of the same name, it focuses on two teenagers with cancer who fall in love after meeting in a support group. The film was widely praised, as were the performances by Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort.
4 Miracle
When Disney does decide to get in on the sports movie world, they typically go with a true story. 2004’s Miracle was just that and it was met with widespread acclaim. The film was boosted by the acting chops of Kurt Russell, Noah Emmerich, and Patricia Clarkson.
Miracle is the retelling of the famous “miracle on ice” that went down during the 1980 Winter Olympics. There, the United States hockey team managed to pull off an incredible upset against the heavily favorited team from the Soviet Union. The tale translated very well to the big screen.
3 Hidden Figures
Hidden Figures works so well as a Disney+ hidden gem because it’s yet another film that isn’t originally part of the Disney catalog. Released by 20th Century Fox in 2016, this is yet another true story and it focuses on a remarkable event from the 1960s.
Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe star as three African-American females who are the unsung heroes at NASA during the Space Race. As mathematicians and engineers, they managed to help make history. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
2 Free Solo
One of the things under the Disney umbrella that not a lot of folks discuss is National Geographic. That gives the streaming service some unique offerings that nobody else has. A true highlight acquired from them was the 2018 documentary, Free Solo.
This is arguably the most intense documentary ever made. It chronicles the journey of rock climber Alex Honnold as he attempts a free solo climb of El Captain, which is a climb without ropes, harnesses, or any safety nets. This took home the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.
1 The Greatest Showman
Another gem from the 20th Century Fox deal comes in the form of 2017’s The Greatest Showman. It boasts an incredible cast of Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Zendaya, and Rebecca Ferguson, as well as songwriting from the genius duo of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
Telling the tale of how P.T. Barnum created his museum and eventual circus, The Greatest Showman features good acting and some incredible song and dance numbers. It won a Golden Globe for its fantastic music and though critics didn’t love it, audiences have left rave reviews.
