Most cinephiles have their favorite comedy movies from the ’00s, but there are plenty of overlooked, forgotten gems that deserve some attention, too.

When it comes to comedy movies from the 2000s, the decade is defined by a few that stand out. Legally Blonde, Anchorman, Zoolander, Wedding Crashers, Old School, Tropic Thunder, Napoleon Dynamite, Mean Girls, and Step Brothers are just a few that will come to most people’s minds.

In fact, the decade was so chock-full of hilarious comedy films that it’s easy to forget so many others that were great but don’t quite rank in the usual top 10. They might have been box office successes when they came out, but rarely top the “what to watch” lists when people are looking for a solid ’00s comedy flick to queue up for a movie night at home. Even if these films don’t rank among the best comedies of all time, many of them are worth some revived attention.

10 Role Models (2008)

Remember this film starring Paul Rudd and Ken Marino? It was about two men who work together as energy drink salesmen and, after being charged with a number of offenses, must complete 150 hours of community service together.

Leading to comedic gold is the fact that they are assigned to work at a program that pairs young children with adult role models. Also starring Seann William Scott, Jane Lynch, and Elizabeth Banks, it’s crude but funny, and the talented cast alone makes it a worthwhile watch. It’s easily one of Rudd’s most underrated roles.

9 A Mighty Wind (2003)

The premise of this film doesn’t sound all that exciting: it’s a mockumentary about a reunion concert involving folk musicians. But considering the fact that it was co-written by Eugene Levy (Schitt’s Creek) and stars everyone from Jane Lynch and Michael McKean to Catherine O’Hara, Parker Posey, Harry Shearer, and the late Fred Willard, the crew could make any storyline flourish.

Indeed, they do just that in this parody film that pokes fun at the revival of folk music in the 60s. Each esteemed actor plays eccentric personalities involved in the quirky musical genre during that time period. It’s easily one of Levy’s funniest films to date.

8 Beauty Shop (2005)

This comedy doesn’t get the recognition it deserves as a hilarious spin-off to the Barbershop film franchise. Queen Latifah reprises her role as Gina, who decides to open a hairstyling shop after butting heads with her rude and egotistical boss (hilariously played by Kevin Bacon).

It tells the story of a single, widowed mother trying to make something of her life, but hitting roadblocks at every turn, from loudmouthed stylists to sabotage. The fantastic cast also includes Alicia Silverstone, Andie MacDowell, Mena Suvari, Djimon Hounsou, and Keshia Knight Pulliam.

7 Bruno (2009)

Sacha Baron Cohen is getting plenty of attention these days for his sequel film to the 2006 mockumentary Borat, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. But so many forget that he released another movie in the ’00s based on a different signature character: Bruno.

Another mockumentary, Bruno is a gay Austrian fashion reporter who travels to the U.S. in hopes of becoming a superstar. It wasn’t the best of Cohen’s mockumentary films, but one worth watching for any fan of his outlandish style.

6 Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

This stop motion animated comedy was popular when it came out and is considered one of the best stop motion movies of all time. This is thanks to its A-list cast that includes George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, and Owen Wilson. Yet almost a decade later, it’s easily one of the forgotten films of the decade when people recall the best comedy films.

The Wes Anderson story, which is based on Roald Dahl’s 1970 children’s novel of the same name, follows a fox who must work with his family to outwit three wealthy farmers trying to kill him for stealing their food.

5 Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)

When people think of Jason Segel from this period in time, they automatically think of the hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother. But the actor also appeared in movies, including this hilarious romantic comedy about a man who heads to Hawaii on vacation to try and forgot about his ex, only to run into her and her new boyfriend on the same island.

Alongside Segel, Forgetting Sarah Marshall also starred Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis, and Russell Brand. The film was praised for offering up just the right mix of romance with raunchy comedy.

4 In Bruges (2008)

Colin Farrell has proven himself talented in both dramatic and comedic roles. And one of his earlier performances on the latter end was in this British-American black comedy crime gem about two Irish hitmen and their angry boss.

Farrell earned a Golden Globe for his leading role in In Bruges, which was even nominated for an Academy for Best Original Screenplay. Yet many have long forgotten about the film that also starred Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes, perhaps because it falls closer to the dark comedy side of the equation.

3 Ratatouille (2007)

It’s easy to forget about this movie, given the amazing number of Pixar films that have been released over the last few decades. But this is a really funny one worth watching again that easily ranks among the top 10 Pixar movies ever. A rat named Remy has big aspirations of one day becoming a chef, so he teams up with a Parisian restaurant garbage boy in hopes that they can work together to fulfill this dream.

Ratatouille features the voices of Patton Oswalt, Janeane Garofalo, Brad Garrett, Peter O’Toole, Brian Dennehy, Will Arnett, and others. It was lauded for its stunning animation and fast-paced action, yet it’s rarely one that parents throw on for the kids, nowadays.

2 Superbad (2007)

It’s the film that put Jonah Hill on the map. But considering his meteoric rise to fame, including taking on much more serious and dramatic roles, many have forgotten about this coming-of-age teen comedy, much less that he was in it.

Hill stars alongside Michael Cera in this Seth Rogen film as teenagers about to graduate high school getting up to all of the typical trouble teenage boys would get up to, including attempting to finally lose their virginity. The story in Superbad sounds so real and relatable because it sort of is: the script is actually based on Rogen’s own time growing up with his friend Evan Goldberg, who co-wrote the movie. Indeed, Hill and Cera play characters named Seth and Evan. The movie is full of funny scenes.

1 Enchanted (2007)

This live-action/animated musical fantasy romantic comedy had kids and adults alike swooning at the lovely story and fairytale characters played by Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, Idina Menzel, and Susan Sarandon.

Made by Disney, it’s a clever self-parody of various Disney animated features, and it’s the film that made Hollywood elites recognize Adams as a viable leading lady. The movie remains very highly rated, yet it’s an often forgotten one in the animated category from the decade.
