There are plenty of viable candidates in the series, but Animal Crossing’s many bear villagers deserve the Build-A-Bear spotlight as much as anyone.

Animal Crossings BuildABears Should Be Its Actual Bear Villagers

The Build-A-Bear Workshop collaboration with Animal Crossing: New Horizons sold out online almost immediately earlier this year. Despite the collection’s apparent popularity, some fans were disappointed that Tom Nook and Isabelle were the only animals to choose from, and speculation about the next plush began immediately. The Animal Crossing series has plenty of viable characters for the collaboration, but it seems like an obvious choice is being overlooked: It’s time to bring AC’s bear villagers to Build-A-Bear.

As the two most recognizable faces of the franchise, Tom Nook and Isabelle were always shoo-ins to be included in the Build-A-Bear collection, but, after them, the possibilities for Animal Crossing plushies are wide open. The Nintendo series has iconic critters from nearly every species, from K.K Slider, the guitar-playing dog, to Blathers, the museum-keeping owl. Iconic NPCs like these two make sense from a marketing standpoint, but Animal Crossing’s bears could bring a lot to the table. Not only are bears the perfect fit for a more traditional Build-A-Bear experience, but they’ve also been overlooked over the franchise’s history, and they’re due for some time in the spotlight.

Bears don’t often appear on “Most Popular Animal Crossing Villagers” lists, but the series has plenty that deserve more love. For example, Curt, the cranky gray bear with a bandage on his head, has been a series staple since the very beginning and is one of the more recognizable villagers in New Horizons. Some of the game’s bears are delightfully wacky, like Klaus, the sandal-wearing bear modeled after a Roman emperor, and Beardo, the sideburn-sporting, suit-wearing blue bear. Many of the bear villagers in Animal Crossing feature unique and colorful appearances that would fit in perfectly on the shelves of a Build-A-Bear store.

Animal Crossing’s Build-A-Bear Collection Should Add Klaus (& Other Bears)

Adding these characters to the collection makes sense on other levels as well. The most obvious, of course, is that a collection from Build-A-Bear should feature plenty of stuffed bears to choose from. Villagers like Curt and Klaus may have unique looks or weird personalities, but they’re still shaped like basic bears, which would presumably make incorporating them with other Build-A-Bear offerings simple. One of Build-A-Bear’s biggest selling points is dressing its buildable creatures up in a variety of different clothing options, and Animal Crossing’s bear villagers would likely have no issue fitting into most articles of clothing the store offers. Additionally, they might appeal more to shoppers who aren’t familiar with the Animal Crossing brand but are looking for a new stuffed bear to buy for their child.

None of this is to say Build-A-Bear should shelve its current lineup of popular AC characters and focus solely on the bears. There are plenty of other villager species that still deserve representation, but Animal Crossing is a big-enough brand to support multiple lines of Build-A-Bear Workshop products. The ideal situation would be to continue with the main lineup of AC faces like Tom Nook and Isabelle but also expand to include a second lineup that focuses only on Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ many bear villagers.
