While some horror movies have mastered the slow reveal of monsters, there are other films whose monster reveal took away from the terror of the movie.

The horror genre has introduced a number of terrifying monsters over the years that have inspired long-running franchises. Some of those horror movies specialize in a slow reveal that teased the monster until its final appearance with the hopes that it would impress and terrify fans.

However, sometimes the reveal of the monster can be a disappointing moment for fans that can potentially ruin the horror movie, whether it’s due to a poorly designed monster or a poorly executed one. Some of these movies would have been remembered much more fondly by horror fans if the monster design and reveal were handled a bit better.

10 1999’s House On Haunted Hill’s Final Ghostly Reveal Was A Shapeless Undefined Mess

The 1999 remake of House on Haunted Hill featured a number of ghostly scares as a group of houseguests were terrorized by the vengeful spirits that resided within the titular house. House on Haunted Hill revealed the dark mass of spirits within the house known as The Darkness, though it was a let-down for some fans.

After the various supernatural horrors seen in the movie already, the smoky and shapeless design of The Darkness failed to capture the terror of the monster and left fans unimpressed with what could have been the most horrifying moment in the movie.

9 The Devil Below Revealed A Giant Mouth Of Teeth That Controlled Smaller Drones

Scientists exploring a small town mine that disappeared in a sinkhole uncover tunnels filled with dangerous monsters in The Devil Below. The monsters are ultimately revealed to be controlled by a giant queen who is responsible for the disappearance of the town.

The build-up around the monstrous creatures that lived within the tunnels by the locals who defended the openings didn’t reward fans when the shuffling creatures were finally revealed. The giant queen monster that appeared in the finale also failed to impress fans due to the low-quality CG and uninspired creature creation.

8 Silver Bullet’s Final Reveal Of The Transformed Werewolf Was Less Than Impressive

Many of Stephen King’s terrifying novels and stories have been adapted to the big screen over the years, like 1985’s werewolf horror Silver Bullet. A young boy in a wheelchair investigates a series of deaths in his small town that puts him on the trail of a werewolf.

While the movie has become a cult favorite and features a respectable transformation scene, the final form of the werewolf looked like a man in a modified bear costume and failed to capture the horror teased throughout the movie.

7 Rawhead Rex Was A Highly-Anticipated Horror Movie With A Terrible Monster Reveal

Clive Barker’s short story Rawhead Rex was adapted for the big screen in 1986, which had many fans anticipating the horror tale about a rampaging monster from folklore. Unfortunately, the cinematic design of the titular Rawhead monster failed to capture the terror of the original stories’ creatures.

Rawhead Rex’s creature design turned a potentially horrifying monster movie into a laughable footnote that inspired Barker to direct his own adaptations of his stories. The failure of Rawhead Rex’s monster led to successful horror movies like Hellraiser which created a franchise based around the Pinhead monster.

6 The Evil Possessive Entity From Demonic Was Revealed As A Disappointing Monster

2021’s Demonic from writer/director Neill Blomkamp followed a troubled daughter who agreed to enter a virtual world to help her comatose mother, though she inadvertently caught the attention of a possessive entity that had forced her mother to do terrible things.

The movie interestingly explored a virtual environment in a new way, though failed to do the same when the titular demonic creature was finally revealed to be a crow monster with a bad costume that failed to draw up any real scares.

5 2005’s Titular Boogeyman Was Much Scarier Before The Monster Was Fully Revealed

When 2005’s Boogeyman promised to explore the terrifying monster who lives in closets and scares kids everywhere, fans were expecting quite a bit from the movie. And while the various supernatural events in the movie helped build up the terror of the Boogeyman, the reveal of the monster was a definite letdown.

The monstrous creature took on the form of childhood toys, which resulted in an unimpressive and non-terrifying Boogeyman that failed to capture the horror felt by children afraid of the monster in the closet. Thankfully the Boogeyman found more terrifying forms in the sequels that followed.

4 Split Second’s Post-Apocalyptic Hunt For A Serial Killer Revealed A Monstrous Biker

1992’s Split Second took place in a flooded London and followed a cop named Stone who shared a psychic connection with a serial killer who killed his partner. The sci-fi horror developed an interesting serial killer mystery with a monstrous connection to the astrological Scorpio sign.

The final monster could have taken many forms with the various story potentials that were uncovered about the monster, but instead, fans were surprised to see a poor imitation of a Xenomorph with sharp teeth and a visor that would have been a better biker helmet than horror movie monster.

3 The Boy Felt Like Supernatural Horror Before The “Monster” Was Finally Revealed

A young woman who was hired to take care of a young boy with very specific rules discovers that the boy in question is really a creepy doll that appears to be moving around on its own in 2016’s The Boy. The movie feels like a supernatural horror that focuses on the creepiness of the doll which serves as a stand-in for the house owners’ son Brahms who was lost years ago.

However, the movie revealed that the lifesize doll was being manipulated by the adult Brahms who had been living in the walls of his parent’s house since his apparent death in a house fire. The “monster” reveal left fans divided, but resulted in a sequel that further explored Brahms.

2 Sinister Was A Terrifying Supernatural Horror Before The Reveal Of The Bagul Monster

A true-crime writer moved his family into a house where a family was brutally murdered in 2012’s Sinister. He begins to experience odd supernatural events as he investigates a box of 8mm movie reels that contains footage of other murdered families.

While the terrifying moments build throughout the movie that teased a number of disappeared children, the ultimate reveal of the demonic Bagul through a series of jump scares erased some of the terror of Sinister. However, it was successful enough for a sequel that left the legend of “Mr. Boogie” unexplored.

1 Malignant Unintentionally Went From Horror To Comedy When The Monster Was Revealed

James Wan’s 2021 horror Malignant followed a woman who was experiencing visions of a mysterious killer that was targeting specific individuals connected to the years before her adoption that she couldn’t remember. The movie featured a few good scares that teased a potentially supernatural threat, though instead shocked fans with a body horror that bordered on ridiculous.

The killer was revealed as the remnants of a deformed and tumorous twin that was able to take control of her body in order to take revenge on the doctors who tried to remove it when she was a child. While it was an interesting premise, the movements and look of the creature were laughable and the horror of the film was lost for some fans.
