Hereditary proved to be an incredibly popular horror movie that has a great blend of scare factor with shocks, twisted family issues, surprises, and simply creepy moments. It is certainly a very eerie movie and has plenty of utterly freaky twists as the family desperately tries to avoid the fate that their grandmother has set for them.
While some horror movies are all about gore or slasher scares, Hereditary is very much a mental horror that constantly has its viewers on edge, guessing what will happen next. Once people have managed to survive this horror, there are plenty of other great options to provide as many spine tingling scares.
10 The Omen (1976)
After a stillborn birth, one father tries to piece his family back together by instantly adopting an orphan child to pass off as their own, as if they never lost a child. That in itself is incredibly jarring, which is something that Hereditary does incredibly well, working a psychological angle for the story.
But when the child they adopt happens to be the son of the Devil, things really go off the rails. Hereditary shows what can happen when a demon has a grip of a family and starts tearing it apart, and The Omen brings very similar themes.
9 Insidious (2011)
While Insidious certainly has no shortage on jump scares and some incredibly creepy visuals, the movie really connects because of its tone. And just like Hereditary, the movie is focused on a family, and the son, Dalton being the one who is trapped in with the demon.
The whole film has an eerie vibe about it, with the score really adding to this particular movie. The scare factor is high here, but seeing a family desperately try to work out how to stop the situation they’re living in is what keeps people hooked.
8 Orphan (2009)
One of the scariest parts about Hereditary is the sheer fear of not knowing what is next, and seemingly kind and caring children end up in positions of complete terror. A lot of that is caused by their bodies being literally possessed, and while Orphan isn’t exactly the same, it is a movie that can provide a similar type of scare.
While the ‘child’ in Orphan ends up being totally different due to the movies big twist, everything up to that point provides a similar sort of feeling.
7 The Witch (2015)
The Witch is another utterly terrifying movie that is also focused around a family and the fact that they have to suffer from sinister forces trying to make their life a misery. Set in the 17th-century, the film builds up tension perfectly, just as Hereditary does, making it quite a slow burner.
However, that brings the fear factor up continuously throughout the film and ensures that the final act is jam-packed with fresh scares which makes the movie so scary. With a few jump scares sprinkled in for good measure, this is one movie that is sure to leave audiences talking as they try to unpack everything.
6 The Exorcist
Having children involved always ramps up the scare factor in a horror movie, mainly because they’re normally seen as incredibly innocent, and that is certainly what makes The Exorcist terrifying. This is one of the scariest films of all time, with Regan becoming possessed by a demonic power that makes her incredibly scary.
Much like Hereditary, it is all about demons possessing people, but there’s no doubt that this film really ramps things up in the scare factor. Regan really changes and becomes evil, whereas the demon doesn’t quite make as many scary moments physically in Hereditary.
5 A Quiet Place (2018)
Much like Hereditary, A Quiet Place doesn’t rely upon big spooks and massive slasher attacks or weapons, it is just incredibly detailed storytelling. This film is also focused around a family, and while there is no cult or demon possession within this movie, it is equally as scary.
The film showcases the fallout and tension that can lie within a family, especially when they’re having to battle for their lives. The acting throughout is amazing, showcasing how good tension within a horror movie can be.
4 The Conjuring (2013)
The Conjuring is an unbelievably scary film and much like Hereditary, it is all based on demon possession. Rather than just being a normal ghost story, this movie has plenty of twists and turns that keep people guessing consistently.
The film has lots of jump scares, with big moments that really push the horror element of the movie. This is why the film is one of the scariest of all time, and the demonic elements really make great connections to Hereditary.
3 The Babadook (2014)
When it comes to psychological horror, there are few scarier than The Babadook, which is incredibly scary and exhausting to watch. This movie will leave audiences shocked and terrified by the end. Once again, it focuses on a family, as Emelia becomes a single mother following the death of her husband, all while she is pregnant.
However, when her son begins to grow a fear of a monster, her tired state then begins to see that all around her as well. The monster is a freaky one aesthetically, and seeing the imaginary sharp-dressed monster causing mayhem to the family only adds to the psychological nightmare that is The Badabook.
2 Midsommar (2019)
Alongside Hereditary, Midsommar is arguably one of the greatest modern horror movies from recent years and it is one that fans will find just as creepy and enjoyable to watch. Florence Pugh is at her absolute best here and she is truly captivating to watch throughout.
What starts out as a nice visit to a friend’s summer festival in Sweden quickly turns into a disaster when a cult comes into play. A cult plays a big part in Hereditary, although it isn’t quite as obvious until later on, but the similarity makes Midsommar a film that people will enjoy.
1 Rosemary’s Baby (1968)
Rosemary’s Baby might be over 50 years old at this point, but few films are as psychologically as scary as this horror classic. Fans of Hereditary would absolutely love this film, which has the right amount of creepy undertones and totally shocking moments.
Once again, a child is at the heart of this one as local neighbors put together a shocking plan for a newborn baby. The things that happen throughout this movie are bizarre and unexpected, which is what makes Hereditary so great as well.
