10 Kaiju Movies That Should Return To Godzilla Canon

Recognized as Japan’s first official Kaiju movie, Ishiro Honda’s landmark 1954 film Godzilla spawned countless mega-monster movies worth reviving.

Given the massive success of the box-office revitalizing blockbuster Godzilla Vs. Kong, the world can expect more mega-monster mash-ups on the big screen in the near future. Recognized as Japan’s first official Kaiju movie, Ishiro Honda’s landmark 1954 film Godzilla spawned countless mega-monster movies in which the iconic fire-breathing beast clashes with a series of equally towering foes.

Many of these Godzilla-kaiju offshoots have been long forgotten about, but here are the ones that ought to make a comeback to the franchise ASAP.

10 Mothra Vs. Godzilla (1964)

Two years after battling Kong for the first time in King Kong Vs. Godzilla, the latter took on one of its most formidable foes in the Mothra, a humongous mutant moth-like insect that was the star of its own eponymous monster movie franchise beginning in 1961. Mothra needs to make a return!

Mothra Vs. Godzilla picks up when the former’s eggs wash ashore in Japan, prompting a greedy businessman to try to sell the eggs. But when Mothra’s offspring hatches and threatens Japan’s population, Mothra must save the city as well as thwart Godzilla’s latest rampage. Godzilla fought Mothra again in 1991 (pictured).

9 Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster (1964)

The same year that Godzilla took on Mothra, the monster doubled back to face Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster in the fifth franchise installment. Not to be left out, Godzilla also interacts with Rodan for the first time in the film.

When an alien from Venus lands in Japan and warns the population of King Ghidorah’s presence, citywide salvation rests in the claws of Godzilla, Mothra, and Rodan. The three beasts team up to defeat Ghidorah, a gargantuan tri-headed monster that should return to the franchise sooner than later.

8 Ebirah, Horror Of The Deep (1966)

As one of the few official Godzilla entries to omit the character’s name from the title, Ebirah, Horror From the Deep boasts one of the best monster melees in the series. As such, the Ebirah needs to make a comeback.

Directed by Jun Fukuda, the plot concerns a search and rescue mission for a lost boy at sea. When the boy’s brother and his crew run into the Ebirah, a gigantic lobster-like creature dwelling underwater off the coast of Japan, Godzilla is awoken from its slumber and forced to fight the creature to the death.

7 Godzilla Vs. Hedorah (1971)

After spending five years taking on various monster attacks and dealing with Son of Godzilla, Godzilla went to war with Hedorah, aka the Smog Monster, in the 11th franchise installment.

To be more accurate, Hedorah comes from the Japanese word “Hedoro” for slime, sludge, vomit, or chemical ooze. The amorphous alien lifeform grows exponentially by feeding on human pollution before Godzilla confronts the monster for ultimate supremacy. Given the advancements in CGI, pitting Godzilla versus a toxic cloud monster could be a winning formula moving forward.

6 Godzilla Vs. Gigan (1972)

One year after defeating Hedorah, Godzilla went right back to the mat to face Gigan, a reptilian space monster turned into a kill-crazy cyborg by an intergalactic race called the Nebulans. Along with King Ghidorah, Gigan is sent to Japan to conquer the world.

Along with Godzilla to prevent the global takeover is Anguirus, the first monster Godzilla ever fought with onscreen back in the 1955 film Godzilla Raids Again. Now in cahoots as Japan’s heroes, the two beasts foil Gigan and Ghidorah’s plot with brute force.

5 Godzilla Vs. Megalon (1973)

Twelve months after triumphing over Gigan, Godzilla took on the gigantic scarab-like monster god Megalon in the 13th franchise entry.

After a nuclear test creates a massive earthquake that sends Godzilla’s pals Rodan and Anguirus underground, the Megalon emerges to control the world with the help of Gigan. On his mission to save the day, Godzilla teams with an android named Jet Jaguar, a memorably unique character who should return to the franchise in the future.

4 Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla (1974)

In two successive franchise entries releases in 1974 and 1975, Godzilla did battle with his technologically upgraded mirror image, Mechagodzilla. The first came in Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla and the other included Terror of Mechagodzilla.

In the former, Godzilla teams with Anguirus and the new character King Caesar to confront Mechagodzilla, a huge titanium robot from outer space equipped with a high-tech arsenal. Since mirror matches tend to be the most even, a return of Mechagodzilla to the franchise is a must.

3 Godzilla Vs. Biollante (1989)

After defeating Mechagodzilla in 1975, Godzilla lied dormant for a decade until The Return of Godzilla in 1984. However, it’s the 1989 follow-up film Godzilla Vs. Biollante that really ought to make a comeback.

The reason being is the villainous Biollante itself, which happens to be a genetic mutation of a female Godzilla mixed with the DNA of a rose flower. The terrifying flora-fauna hybrid runs roughshod over Japan until Godzilla mounts a brutal counterattack. As one of the craziest creatures Godzilla ever faced, Biollante needs to return.

2 Godzilla Vs. Destroyah (1995)

After rematching some of his aforementioned enemies during the early 1990s, Godzilla squared off with Destroyah in 1995, a hive-minded collection of aquatic mutants that can change form and fly away from their foes.

Upon consuming too much nuclear energy, Godzilla’s heart has become a nuclear reactor in the throes of a devastating meltdown. As Japan’s officials work to ensure Godzilla’s survival, the giant beast takes on human-sized crab monsters known as the Destroyah while protecting its offspring, Godzilla Junior.

1 Godzilla Vs. Megaguirus (2000)

The most recent Kaiju film that should make a return to the Godzilla canon is Godzilla Vs. Megaguirus, the franchise’s 25th film. As the queen of the Meganula, Megaguirus is a giant dragon-fly-like creature whose kind first appeared in the 1956 film Rodan.

In addition to its scary size and stature, the Megaguirus draws power from Godzilla’s own nuclear source, which makes them stronger while simultaneously weakening Godzilla in the process. Still, with the help of a Dimension Tide, Godzilla harnesses enough energy to crush the creature’s powerful stinger and firebomb the Megaguirus to death.
