10 Secret Garden
When Gil Ra-im, a stuntwoman with a tragic past, is mistaken for her body double by Kim Joo-won, the rich, young president of a luxury department store, the latter immediately takes an interest in her. At first, he’s fascinated (and repulsed) by the massive difference in their position in society but eventually sees there’s a lot more to her than that.
As the story moves along, the audience discovers that Gil Ra-im lost her father, a firefighter, in a fire. Throughout the drama, the audience is also taunted with the mystery of an accident Kim Joo-won was involved in years ago, which left him with suppressed memories and claustrophobia. The truth about his accident is revealed in a flashback sequence that’s horrific and sad and bound to test the strength of their newly-formed relationship.
9 It’s Okay, That’s Love
After meeting during a tense TV show where they’re pitted against each other, the main leads, Ji Hae-soo (a psychiatrist) and Jang Jae-yeol (author of mystery/thrillers) continue to cross paths. When a series of events leads to them staying in the same building, their relationship slowly goes from enemies to friends to something more.
It’s Okay, That’s Love does an impressive job of presenting different mental health conditions through various characters that make an appearance in the season. Their stories are all touching but the heartbreaking part comes with the reveal of just how big an impact Jang Jae-yeol’s traumatic childhood had on him. While the audience is shown that he has OCD from the start, the truth about a young man who follows him around is the shocking reveal.
8 It’s Okay To Not Be Okay
Ko Mun-yeong, a children’s author with an anti-social personality disorder takes an intense interest in Moon Gang-tae, a man who hops from one city to another, seeking employment in different psychiatric wards. He travels with his brother Moon Sang-tae who is autistic and despite Gang-tae’s reluctance to entertain Ko Mun-yeong at first, the three of them strike up an adorable friendship.
Sang-tae and Gang-tae deal with the loss of their mother, who was murdered when they were kids—something they have in common with Mun-yeong. One of the biggest reveals is their childhood connection, but this same connection leads to the disturbing revelations about what happened the night both women were murdered. And that’s just the first of many heartbreaking twists.
7 Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo
In the midst of a total solar eclipse, Go Hae-jin is thrown back centuries in time, waking up in the body of Lady Hae Soo and right in the middle of royal drama. As she tries to adjust to the new era and find her place in it, her life becomes intimately intertwined with the princes, leading to drama, heartbreak, death, and betrayal.
The drama combines time travel and reincarnation, without making the plot too difficult to follow. Because she’s from the future, Hae Soo knows the princes’ destinies, but when she tries to change the course of history, she becomes the catalyst for the events she tries to prevent. Moon Lovers wraps up with a devastating scene and is one K-Drama that fans hope will get a season 2 to tie up the loose ends.

The past and present collide in Signal, thanks to a walkie-talkie that allows a detective from 1986 to communicate with a criminal profiler in the year 2015. Throughout the season, the detective helps the profiler solve cold cases in the future while the profiler helps him get ahead of open cases in the past.
While the drama doesn’t include time travel in the traditional sense, the characters suffer the heartbreaking consequences of their efforts to change the past and the future. As the drama unfolds, the plot starts to hit a little too close to home when one of their cold cases involves the mysterious disappearance of the detective.

Also referred to as Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, Goblin starts out with the wrongful execution of a decorated military general. As punishment for the soldiers he killed, while he was still alive, Kim Shin is cursed with an immortal life of servitude as he watches his loved ones die while he lives on. The only one who can break the curse is a young woman who appears 900 years later, destined to be the goblin’s “bride.”
The supernatural K-Drama with hints of a fairytale love story delves into reincarnation, creating a convoluted plot where every character’s past, present, and afterlife are connected in the most shocking ways. With the grim reaper as one of the main characters, heartwrenching deaths are a guarantee too.
4 W – Two Worlds Apart
When two worlds combine, chaos, death, and heartbreak follow. The story begins with Kang Chul, who finds his entire family dead, with him as the prime suspect of their murders. As he tries to find the real killer, the drama introduces Oh Yeon-joo, a surgeon in training and the daughter of a webtoon creator whose main character is Kang Chul.
The plot kicks off when Yeon-joo discovers her father’s plan to kill off Kang Chul, and she somehow ends up in the webtoon, saving his life. The more their worlds intertwine, the more dangerous life gets. The 2037 timeline shows a new version of their world, divided into two sections, where a crime detective investigates the disappearance of the 2017 brothers from their timeline.
Each episode slowly unravels the mystery of how the two timelines are connected, throwing in plot twists and red herrings that leave the audience guessing after each episode. As the storylines converge, the action gets more intense, merging seamlessly into an ending that’s both unexpected and tear-jerking.
2 Sad Love Story
When Joon-young and Hye-in meet for the first time as kids, they instantly become best friends. After Joon-young gets injured while protecting Hye-in, her aunt flees with her to another city and the two best friends lose touch. Believing him to be dead, Hye-in moves on and gets engaged to her producer Gun-woo, who introduces her to his friend.
Unbeknownst to her, the friend is actually Joon-young, but because she was blind when they were kids, she never knew what he looked like and thus, doesn’t recognize him. Sad Love Story lives up to its name as the two leads meet one obstacle after another. The drama is filled with terribly frustrating near-misses, bittersweet moments, and a blindsiding ending.
1 The Smile Has Left Your Eyes
On the surface, The Smile Has Left Your Eyes is an enemies-to-lovers story, with Kim Moo-young and Yoo Jin-kang falling in love after some initial tension between them. Convinced that Moo-young has a shady, hidden past, Jin-Kang’s brother, Yoo Jin-gook starts investigating him and finds an unexpected connection that links the three of them.
This drama takes the audience on a roller coaster of emotions with twists, turns, lies, and secrets so dark, they leave a lasting impression long after the credits have rolled. The ups and downs throughout the drama culminate in a heart-pounding climax and an ending scene that leaves the audience with an intense sense of loss.
