The death-defying challenges of Squid Game are so perilous that even a Pokémon Trainer as competitive as Gary Oak may have reservations. With the recent announcement of a second season for the dark survival thriller as well as the release of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, these trending phenomenons are likely not to crossover past the extent of memes and fan art. In a standard duel between Legendaries, there may be a clear-cut winner based on stats, but in the Squid Game, it would come down to much more.

10 Regirock

Despite being composed of rock and stone, Regirock is not built for this competition. The cave-dwelling Hoenn titan has an unmistakably high base Defense stat that, unfortunately, will only get it so far in the first round, Hide and Seek. The golem-like creature’s sturdy frame hinders its mobility, which will put it at a severe disadvantage when lumbering through the course.

Assuming that the course’s repercussions remain, the Rock-type Legendary will have difficulty fending off constant firepower (especially if the ammo is “steel cased”). If Regirock does manage to advance to the dalgona challenge, it will certainly be eliminated for not having hands nor a proper means to cut out a carved symbol.

9 Cosmog

Akin to its peculiar evolutionary trajectory, Cosmog may come along further than expected, but its innate sensibilities will keep it from advancing too far. 8 Silvally

As an imitation designed to recreate the qualities of the god-like Arceus, Silvally falls disappointingly short, but this Legendary from the Alola region has inherited enough human qualities to be considered a worthy contender. With an affinity for friendship and a programmable memory for recalling different move sets, this synthetic lifeform is surprisingly sentient, adaptable, and trustworthy. Such traits and characteristics make this chimerical Pokémon an apt teammate.

As an individual competitor, while maintaining well-balanced stats, it significantly pales in comparison to the creature it aspires to replicate. Furthermore, if it is not holding a Memory Disc, its Normal-type form is less resistant, vulnerable to fighting moves, and offensively inferior. Not super effective.

7 Uxie

Coined as “The Being of Knowledge,” this wise, fairy-like Legendary from the Sinnoh region is a valuable asset with stipulations. With the ability to wipe out both memories and ambition, the powerful Psychic-type is widely regarded as one of the most intelligent Pokémon. Sporting high emotional intelligence, Uxie can ameliorate a stressful situation, like calming down Dialga and Palkia in the event that they become enraged.

Due to a proclivity for pacifism, the Lake Guardian refuses to abuse its powers. The decision not to engage in conflict may very well be correlated to its comparatively low base stats, which are unlikely to overpower opposing legendaries. Despite similar stats, Latios is a highly offensive player whereas Latias is a highly defensive player.

The Land Spirit Pokémon may appear cute on the surface, but as a wielder of nature’s wrath, this incarnate is a force to be reckoned with. Aware of its physical limitations, the guardian deity of Akala Island can outsmart even the most intimidating of foes, taking control of a battle through Psychic-based strategies. A true “frenemy,” the unpredictable, butterfly-like Pokémon produces luminous scales that can either heal or destroy.

While it displays some amiable tendencies, the seemingly innocent creature lacks empathy for those who are afflicted by its scales, making it easier for this pocket monster to emotionally detach itself from other contestants. Similar to the competitor, Cho Sang-woo, Tapu Lele is cunning, resourceful, and will do almost anything to outlast its opponent.

4 Lugia

Spending its life in solitude, the Guardian of the Sea withholds its catastrophic power in order to keep the world above safe. A decision like this shows how intelligent and well-disciplined this Pokémon can be. Knowing when and when not to make moves is a key strategy that is all the more heightened by its telepathic abilities. The empathetic birdlike Legendary from Johto may have a soft spot, but if pushed, it won’t be so considerate to those who seek trouble.

Owning its title as the “Great Wall,” Lugia is a defensive powerhouse. Its power will have to be tempered when playing games that require focus and precision such as the dalgona challenge. The mere extension of its wings can produce mighty storms, easily destroying cities, let alone pieces of candy. It does help that Lugia’s wings duel function as hands, increasing its dexterity, and it can always use telekinesis to operate more meticulously.

3 Cresselia

Harnessing the light of a crescent moon, Cresselia is not only a strong ally, but a tricky competitor with a plethora of mind games. Possessing the ability to manipulate dreams, conjure psychic blades, teleport, and even travel through time, the cosmic entity can easily manipulate the outcome of the competition.

Bravely claiming victory over Darkrai, her mythical counterpart, the Legendary Pokémon dispels dark energy with unfaltering stamina. Although her regenerative skills are highly efficient, her proficiency to revitalize others can backfire. Using her selfless move, “Moonlight,” Cresselia can fully restore teammates, eradicating all status issues, but, in return, deplete her HP to a single point.

2 Necrozma

From the Farthest Hollow on Ten Carat Hill, this Psychic-type Pokèmon is definitely one of the strongest of its types. Known to the Ancient Alolans as “the pillager of light,” the aggressive Legendary, plagued with eternal pain, will stop at nothing to absorb light. With enough energy, it can forcibly take the form of either Dark Mane Necrozma or Dark Wings Necrozma by controlling the mind and bodies of other legendaries.

Along with possession, it has the reality-bending ability to warp through wormholes, and its defensive “Prism Armor” guards it against attacks that its type is most vulnerable to. Its Ultra form is brutally strong, but if it hasn’t acquired enough light, it will succumb to rage and diminish in power. Still, when it has a goal in mind, it’s determined to achieve it even by any means necessary, making this cataclysmic member of the “light trio” a ruthless contestant.

1 Mewtwo

Based on lore and raw statistics, Arceus is unmatched, but not undefeatable, especially in the context of Squid Game. The artificial humanoid lifeform, Mewtwo, was engineered to be the very best, complete with genius-level intellect, comprehension of human speech, mind control, a levitating force field, and deft agility.

An abomination, the genetically spliced Legendary was not part of Arceus’ plan, and therefore, operates on its own agenda, becoming so powerful it’s unnatural. Comparable to singularity, the highly sentient being has the advanced capability of learning with a keen sense of awareness. Despite initially having weaker stats, Mewtwo can Mega Evolve consequently increasing its base stat total to exceed that of Arceus. Reminiscent of the Squid Game, in general, Mewtwo is a man-made death machine that exposes the folly of its creator.
