10 Modern Successors To Classic Video Game Characters

Iconic video game characters like Mario and Link are from the past. Thankfully, modern gaming has several possible successors to the throne.

Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog, Pac-Man, and Link. These characters are some of the classic faces of gaming as players know it today. They helped bend, shape, and warp the medium into the beloved pastime enjoyed by millions around the world today. But with new technologies, techniques, and methods of creation, the classic characters have somewhat stepped aside to bring in the new generation.

For new gamers, when they think of what they consider a classic game, their minds might not spring to heroes of old, but rather a new breed that has stepped onto the field. How does the old guard compare to this new generation?

10 Fenyx/Link

While this entry might be fairly recent, there’s no denying the influence Link from Breath of the Wild had on the hero character from Immortals: Fenyx Rising. They might greatly differ in their appearances, but it’s easy to draw a line between the armors, weapons, and tools used by them.

Link has his glider and Fenyx has the Icarus Wings. While Link has to go find the Sheikah shrines, Fenyx has to undergo the Hades challenges. Fenyx is a hero who is kind of in the same vein as Link.

9 Diablo Classes/Gauntlet Heroes

At one time, Gauntlet was the pinnacle of a co-op fantasy adventure. But now that the age of 8-bit graphics and glory are gone, who leads the quest now?

From its classes to its isometric point of view, Diablo could be considered the modern Gauntlet. If one needs further proof, they need only look at the classes and characters for direct parallels. From wizards and warriors to demons and dungeons, there’s no doubt that Blizzard did their homework when crafting this title.

8 Trace/Samus Aran

The Nintendo Switch has been a veritable breeding ground for Metroidvanias, one of the first to receive such distinction was Axiom Verge. While the scientist might lack the suped-up battle armor of a certain orange bounty hunter, they play and feel scarily similar.

Many games call themselves Metroidvanias, but Axiom Verge truly feels not like a sequel but like an equal to the Nintendo classic. Although, long-time players can’t help but wonder how Samus would do with Trace’s weapon stash.

7 Nathan Drake/Lara Croft

On the other hand, there are characters that feel like they lie just a little bit too close to their inspirations. Is it really so much of a stretch that Nathan Drake could be considered just a male Lara Croft?

A video game treasure hunter who is excellent with a gun, grappling and platforming, does any of that sound familiar? Granted, Drake works with a team and Lara dives into her adventures solo, but there’s still an unshakable identicalness between the two.

6 Yooka and Laylee/Banjo and Kazooie

Right from their names, the pair this lizard and bat duo are succeeding is the lovable bear and bird buddies of the ’90s. Like Banjo and Kazooie, Yooka and Laylee explore a colorful world, collecting various shiny objects on a quest to defeat an over-the-top villain.

It’s more than a bit on the nose, but it’s an adequate and heartfelt tribute to the 3D-platformers of yesterday. As the saying goes, a true classic never goes out of style.

5 Miriam/Alucard

Symphony of the Night has often been considered one of the greatest action-platformer games of all time, and when Koji Igarashi, a lead developer of the Castlevania series, released his successor to the popular game, the comparisons were rapidly made.

Miriam might not be a dashing vampire like Alucard, but she does have that monster-blood and gift for spells and bladed weapons. For further proof of that classic influence, be sure to check out the 1986 mode for a familiar but difficult experience.

4 Bayonetta/Dante

The successor relationship between Bayonetta and Devil May Cry has been discussed so much that talks of a crossover between both Bayonetta and Dante have been rumored for years. Honestly, it’s impossible not to make that comparison.

Both do battle with the forces of Heaven and Hell, wield various forms of magic and automated weaponry, and both do their deeds with a certain tongue-in-cheek flavor. Would bringing these two together really be that much of a challenge? After all, there’s nothing wrong with a little fan service.

3 Assassins/Prince of Persia

Those versed in the history of the game know that the Assassin’s Creed series originally had origins as a Prince of Persia spinoff. So it makes sense that something like Sands of Time plays remarkably similar to the Ezio trilogy of Assassin’s Creed games.

Although there might be an ocean of time between them, Ezio and the Prince are remarkably similar in their charm, wit, and acrobatic parkour skills. There’s also a very coincidental similarity between a young Ezio and the Prince’s first appearance in the 3D titles, but who’s to say.

2 The Messenger/Ryu Hayabusa

There’s a difference between homage and painfully obvious, but The Messenger definitely takes the cake in terms of characters. Although the games are very different in tone, the titular ninja in question has a similar design and animation cycle to the original masked platformer, Ryu Hayabusa.

Though this is mainly during the 8-bit sections of the game, The Messenger and Ryu are separated by mainly a palate swap. The Messenger’s weapons aside, it’s still an uncanny successor worth noting.

1 Shovel Knight/Mega Man, Mario, and Scrooge McDuck

The obvious influences are of course Mega Man and Mario, with his ability to take on new skills and quest for rescuing a damsel in distress, but his hearty stature and pogo-stick method of using his shovel to bounce on enemies is 100% Scrooge McDuck from the Ducktales games.

The game as a whole incorporates the best traditional Nintendo titles had to offer, resulting in a beautiful tribute to classic platformers of old instead of just a standard successor. The love for the retro genre is certainly strong with this one.
