The 20th century gave the world some of the most menacing figures that define the horror genre. Many of the characters, such as Michael Myers, Dracula, Frankenstein, and Freddy Kreuger, still remain popular today and influence many of the villains seen since.
However, the first 20 years of the 21st century have introduced audiences to horrifying villains that will be remembered and passed on to future generations. From slashers to demonic spirits, there are plenty of recent villains who have terrified audiences and the characters who unfortunately come across them in the movies.
10 Valak – The Conjuring 2
This demonic spirit who made its debut in The Conjuring 2 takes the form of a creepy nun that terrorizes its victims. This villain made such an impact on audiences that it received its own film within The Conjuring universe, The Nun.
Religious figures can often be frightening in horror movies, but Valak’s image is quite alarming. It’s pale face and sharp teeth are very creepy and make people feel fortunate that they never have had to counter a nun like this. This demon is also great at scaring people. The scene involving the painting still haunts audiences to this day.
9 Samara Morgan – The Ring
Most people know this character as “the creepy girl from The Ring.” However, while many may not remember her real name, everyone remembers the scene where she crawls out of the TV.
This image is engraved in everyone’s mind, as well as her whole design, with her long black hair that blocks her face and her all-white outfit that makes her black hair stand out even more. She is a vengeful spirit who goes after viewers of the video she appears in. So, if you find out you only have a week to live after viewing her in the creepy video, you may believe it.
8 The Babadook – The Babadook
The Babadook is a monster from a fictional book who begins to terrorize a family in the psychological thriller of the same title. The Babadook has a unique, creepy design with a top hat, long, talon-like fingers, and a pale complexion.
While this monster doesn’t have a ton of screen time in The Babadook, its presence is felt throughout the whole movie. It made a strong impression with many audiences, and many consider The Babadook to be one of the scariest horror movies of the 2010s.
7 The Armitage Family – Get Out
What may be even scarier than monsters and demons are real-life racists. The Armitage family are the main antagonists in Get Out, who use their daughter to lure Black people back to their house where they transfer the consciousness of white buyers into their bodies, leaving the Black men and women trapped in the Sunken Place.
Aside from their horrible racism, the actual experiment they perform is absolute torture, as the Sunken Place is a fate worse than death. Jordan Peele created a family who is so frightening because they seem so real.
6 Bagul – Sinister
Bagul is the pagan deity from Sinister and Sinister 2 who consumes the souls of human children and possesses a realm of his own. He travels to the mortal world through images of himself and while he is scary enough in a photo, once he travels to our world, he begins to lurk around every corner, terrifying families.
His face looks like an inkblot from a Rorschach test, creating a haunting image that stays in audiences’ heads, long after the movie is over. Sinister has recently been declared the scariest film ever, according to science, and Bagul could be part of the reason why.
5 Sam – Trick ‘R Treat
Kids often take trick or treating very seriously, but nobody takes it as seriously as Sam. Featured in the cult classic Trick ‘r Treat, Sam is a demon that represents the spirit of Halloween. On Halloween night, he roams the neighborhood, punishing anyone who doesn’t adhere to the rules of Halloween.
Sam dons a costume that entails a set of orange pajamas and a burlap sack with buttons for eyes. What is even creepier than his costume is what lies underneath. While Sam does appear to have a childlike demeanor, he will surely make neighborhood residents wish he doesn’t show up on their doorstep.
4 Annabelle – The Conjuring
Creepy dolls have always been popular in horror movies, but Annabelle may be the most infamous. Annabelle made her debut in The Conjuring and later had her own separate trilogy of films, including the prequel Annabelle: Creation, which describes how the possessed doll came to be.
There are lots of things about Annabelle’s design that make her frightening: her unnerving smile, rosy red cheeks, and seemingly dead eyes. She may look like a toy, however, she is anything but. Remember, if you see a creepy doll sitting in a room, it is probably best to just turn around and walk away.
3 The Tethered – Us
Another creation from Jordan Peele, the tethered are evil clones of people. In Us, The Tethered run loose one night, killing their real-world doppelgangers and uniting hand-in-hand around the world.
What makes The Tethered so iconic is their costumes, which quickly became engraved in pop-culture. The red-jumpsuits and golden scissors make unique slashers that are instantly recognizable. The way The Tethered behave, including Lupita Nyong’o’s raspy, slow voice, is very unsettling. Sometimes there is nothing scarier than looking into a mirror and being horrified by what you see.
2 Jigsaw – Saw
Jigsaw is one of the most recognizable faces within the horror community. With a horrifying, low voice, constantly asking if you want to play a game, Jigsaw has been terrorizing his victims for eight movies, with a ninth installment executive produced by and starring Chris Rock, coming soon.
Jigsaw has set up some of the most gruesome, gory traps that have created some truly disgusting kills in the Saw franchise. Jigsaw’s mask is one that is commonly seen during Halloween, as the creepy smile and pointy, spiral cheeks are unsettling.
1 Pennywise – It
While Tim Curry as Pennywise the dancing clown was great in the It mini-series, Bill Skarsgard truly made him an iconic figure. From the moment he appears beneath the sewer, Pennywise made an instant impression on audiences.
He is an unpredictable foe, who can be sometimes funny and charming and then immediately turn into an evil killer with razor-sharp teeth and bloodthirsty eyes. This is an entity that takes on many different appearances, based on the fears of its victims, but Pennywise is easily the most memorable.
