Any doubts about the MCU were quickly vaporized as Joss Whedon and company delivered a thrilling, funny, and groundbreaking comic book movie. 10 You Were Made To Be Ruled
The MCU’s early days were stellar, but there was a growing issue of their villains. Most of the bad guys were instantly forgettable, except for Loki, who brought a complex nature to the first Thor film.
It was a good thing then that they decided to bring him back as the main villain for The Avengers. Whedon helped grow the character even more and gave him some great villain monologues, like when Loki is in Germany, explaining to the frightened humans that his conquering of them will make their lives simpler.
9 We Have A Hulk
For anyone who grew up reading the comics of these characters, it was just a thrill to see them referenced by each other let alone seeing them fighting side by side. The movie also wisely shows showing growing pains as a team which makes them coming together all the more satisfying.
When Tony Stark confronts Loki before the final battle, he lays out just how impressive their roster is. Loki reminds Tony he has an army and Tony responds, “We have a Hulk”. It’s such an epic line that starts to feel like the team is really coming together.
8 Shakespeare In The Park?
As fun as it is to see these characters fight together, it’s maybe just as much fun seeing them make fun of each other. Joss Whedon is great at this kind of witty dialogue and has a lot of fun making these heroes insult each other.
When Iron Man and Thor meet for the first time, Thor warns the mortal that he doesn’t know what he’s getting involved with. Tony responds “Shakespeare in the park? Does mother know you weareth her drapes.” It’s the perfect way to make these characters a bit more grounded.
7 I Got Red In My Ledger
Black Widow was introduced briefly but memorably in Iron Man 2, but The Avengers really gives her character a chance to grow as one of the central members of the team. The movie even gives time to dig a little into her troubled past.
When she is interrogating Loki, the Asgardian villain questions why she is determined to save Hawkeye. She replies “I got red in my ledger, I’d like to wipe it out.” That is a line that has gone on to define the character and her growth as a hero over the years.
6 I’m Always Angry
After the lukewarm reception to The Incredible Hulk and the recasting of the role, Hulk was a big question mark in this team-up movie. But Mark Ruffalo proved to be a great fit for the role and Whedon brought out a lot of the fun and depth to the character.
As Banner shows up to the final battle with a Leviathan heading toward them, Captain America tells him now would be a good time to get angry. Banner responds, “That’s my secret, Captain, I’m always angry.” Before instantly transforming and taking down the giant beast.
5 He’s Adopted
With all the great action and interesting character moments, it’s surprising how funny The Avengers is as well. There are so many quotable lines of the characters just going back and forth with their big egos.
While the heroes come together at the Helicarrier, Banner makes mention of Loki being crazy. Thor sternly tells Banner that despite what Loki has done, he is still his brother. Black Widow reminds him that he’s killed 80 people in the past few days and Thor sheepishly adds, “He’s adopted.”
4 I Understood That Reference
This film is the first time we get to see how Captain America is coping with life in the 21st Century. While this is explored better in his later solo films, there is some interesting development here as well as some fun moments.
With all the Whedon-esque pop culture references flying around, Cap often looks like a lost puppy. But when someone mentions how Loki has turned Hawkeye into his personal flying monkey, Thor says he doesn’t understand. Cap quickly shouts that he does, excited to not be out of the loop for once.
3 And Hulk… Smash
Following the iconic circle shot of the heroes in the middle of the Battle of New York, we finally get to see the team in action. All the egos are put aside as Iron Man defers to Captain America to lead them into the fight.
Cap wastes no time giving out orders and telling each of the heroes where they need to be. He then turns to Hulk and simply tells him “Smash”. Hulk immediately obliges and shows how good it is to have him fighting on their side.
2 And Then Shawarma?
Robert Downey Jr. is a big reason the MCU grew into the massive phenomenon it has become, and he probably remains the biggest star in the franchise. When it came to the first team-up movie, he allowed the spotlight to be shared while still stealing the show.
After risking his life to defeat the Chitauri, Stark suggests the team all take a break and go try some shawarma. It was apparently an ad-lib by Downey Jr. in the moment, but it helped inspire the hilarious post-credit scene in which the heroes unwind with a nice silent meal.
1 Puny God
Given that he was probably the least anticipated character in the movie, Hulk surprised everyone by stealing the show. While he is a fun menace at the beginning, he is the MVP of the final battle, especially with his run-in with Loki.
Loki tries to talk down to Hulk, saying he is a God and all of these Avengers are beneath him. Hulk isn’t interested in talking and simply grabs Loki and beats him into the ground like a ragdoll. He then tosses him aside and struts away saying, “Puny God.”
