10 Most Satisfying Sitcom Finales

While most episodes of a sitcom can be watched out of order, since this type of TV show is made for light-hearted and casual viewing, the series finale is often targeted at true, loyal fans. This is when the characters take stock of what they’ve been through for the past few years and the relationships that they have made along the way.

When fans sit down to watch a beloved sitcom’s last episode, they hope for happy endings, characters getting back together, and a friend group who will never lose touch. There have been several sitcoms over the past few decades that have gotten their conclusions exactly right.

10 Boy Meets World

10 Most Satisfying Sitcom Finales

Boy Meets World is one of the most beloved ’90s sitcoms and the last episode is thankfully just as sweet and emotional as the rest of the show.

While Boy Meets World can be confusing, the series finale sees the characters saying farewell to their favorite teacher Mr. Feeny in his classroom. While they want some wisdom from him, he correctly says that he has talked to them so much over the years that they definitely know how to move forward now. Mr. Feeny’s final line “I love you all. Class dismissed” still makes fans tear up when they think about it.

9 Awkward

10 Most Satisfying Sitcom Finales

Awkward aired on MTV for five seasons, and viewers enjoyed following Jenna’s journey as she grows up and falls in love with both Jake and Matty.

In a compelling final moment, Matty tells Jenna that while he truly gets her, loves her, and wants to be with her, she has to focus on what she really wants out of life. Fans get the feeling that he’ll be there for her if she wants to get back together, but they both agree that she has a lot of dreams to work toward first. This feels right, as Jenna is still young and she wants to think about more than just a romantic partner.

8 Mad About You

10 Most Satisfying Sitcom Finales

After airing for 7 seasons, Mad About You recently got a reboot that slightly changed the events of the last episode. While the series finale “The Final Frontier” features Paul and Jamie’s daughter Mabel as an adult who is now a filmmaker talking about her family, the reboot sees her as a young college student.

Taking the series finale at face value, though, it’s an incredibly heartwarming last episode and fans are glad to see Mabel doing so well and exploring the same creative field that her dad has. While it’s sad to see Paul and Jamie break up for a period of time, they get back together, and it feels realistic as they have had problems for years and it feels like they both have some growing up to do.

7 New Girl

10 Most Satisfying Sitcom Finales

The New Girl series finale allows Winston to do one last prank, and it seems like there’s no other way to say goodbye to Jess and Nick and their friends. Winston makes everyone think that they had to move out of the loft and then explains that the moving company name can be rearranged to spell “My Greatest Prank.”

When comparing New Girl characters season 1 to finale, they have grown up and their wants and needs are so different now. It’s exciting watching CeCe and Schmidt raise their family and there are good things on the horizon for Nick and Jess as well. Viewers know that the characters will remain just as close as ever and that’s exactly what everyone wants.

6 The Good Place

10 Most Satisfying Sitcom Finales

From the pilot of The Good Place, it’s clear that this is a super unique show that will be quite the ride. Is Eleanor actually a good or a bad person? Where is she actually supposed to be, and will she and Chidi make it?

The last episode is both surprising and feels like it had to end this way, as the characters decide that it’s the right time for them to move on to the next place which means passing away. They have been in the afterlife for so long that they’ve felt that they’ve done everything that they wanted to do. In a last hilarious scene, Michael is living on Earth as a human being, which he has always wanted to do, and he happily tells a stranger “Take it sleazy.”

5 Parks And Recreation

10 Most Satisfying Sitcom Finales

The final episode of Parks And Recreation called “One Last Ride” does exactly what a good series finale should: allows fans to think about how much they love these characters and give them a glimpse of their futures. April and Andy have kids, which is sweet, and Ben and Leslie go back to Pawnee to see their old friends and think about their next steps as they could each run for governor.

It’s wonderful and romantic when Ben knows that Leslie needs to be governor and fans relate to this Parks And Recreation couple for many reasons. The episode also ends on a humorous note with Garry’s last name spelled wrong on his gravestone, and viewers feel that this fits the show’s tone well.

4 The Big Bang Theory

10 Most Satisfying Sitcom Finales

While fans were confused by Penny’s pregnancy in The Big Bang Theory series finale “The Stockholm Syndrome,” as she has never wanted to be a parent, Amy and Sheldon had satisfying final storylines. The characters win a Nobel Prize in Physics and Sheldon shares how much his friends have helped him in his acceptance speech, which is heartwarming.

The finale also has a great scene of the friends eating in Apartment 4A, the place where Sheldon lives when the show opens. It doesn’t feel like this show could end any other way, and while viewers wish that Penny’s pregnancy had been left out of this last episode, at least everyone is happy and still good friends.

3 Will And Grace

10 Most Satisfying Sitcom Finales

While the Will And Grace revival has three seasons, the last episode of season 8 was the first season finale, and it features a storyline that might not be perfect but still ultimately has something meaningful to say.

Both characters are now parents, which is great to see, and it’s heartbreaking when fans find out that they don’t talk for many years and their relationship seems to be over. When 20 years have passed, Will and Grace become close friends again, and it’s satisfying to see that no matter how much time has passed, they’re still there to support one another. It might be tough to see them estranged, but it’s definitely realistic.

2 Modern Family

10 Most Satisfying Sitcom Finales

While fans debate the pros and cons of Modern Family’s finale, the last storylines for the Dunphy/Pritchett/Delgado households still make a lot of sense and help viewers say goodbye to this beloved TV family.

Claire and Phil plan to travel in an RV, Cam and Mitch move with their kids to Missouri for Cam’s dream coaching job, and Dylan and Haley live in Cam and Mitch’s apartment that they have left behind. It’s impossible to watch this last episode without tearing up at least once, and while it’s sad to see the Modern Family characters scattering around, it’s nice to know that they will always make it a priority to spend time together.

1 Friends

While fans of Friends would love for the main characters to never leave each other, that doesn’t seem realistic as they’re older now and have settled down. Since Chandler and Monica and Ross and Rachel now have their own families, it’s inevitable that everyone will move away from each other.

This is a fairly perfect sitcom series finale as the characters prove how much they love each other and agree to go to Central Perk for the final time. This ending wouldn’t be nearly as good if Ross and Rachel didn’t get back together, and it’s fitting that they finally find their way back to each other.
