Even by the standards of a show like Succession, the third season of the hit HBO series had some very shocking and horrifying moments.

There are few series on television that are quite like Succession, which is as much about the deep and damaging dysfunction of the Roy family as it is about the company that the family patriarch, Logan, founded and continues to rule with an iron fist.
With each season, the series has continued to push the envelope in terms of what its characters are willing to do and say as they pursue power, no matter the cost, and season 3 had a number of moments that were especially shocking. In some cases, they were even deeply disturbing.
10 Roman’s Unfortunate Picture Incident
Roman is one of the series’ most complicated characters, so it makes sense that it would also be seen as one of Kieran Culkin’s best roles. However, his disrespect for norms and authority sometimes gets in his own way, as when he inadvertently sends a picture of his genitalia to his father instead of Gerri (the intended recipient).
It’s a shocking moment even for Roman, and it thoroughly endangers his position with his father, who begins to doubt whether he really has what it takes to take over the company or be one of its leaders.
9 Willa’s Agreeing To Marry Connor
In some important ways, Connor is the black sheep of the family, and he clearly exists outside of his father’s golden circle. Thus, he relies heavily on his lover and girlfriend Willa, even going so far as to propose marriage. She, however, makes it very clear that she doesn’t really want to do this until she decides in the spur of the moment to agree.
Given how much she seems to barely tolerate Connor’s presence, her decision to marry him defies logic, but it does suggest that she might see him as a potential avenue to gaining wealth and prestige.
8 Roman Supporting A White Supremacist
Roman is one of the most ruthless of the members of the Roy family, as he shows time and again, willing to do almost anything to get his father’s favor. However, his decision to throw his support behind a political candidate who is a white supremacist is a bit far even for him.
It’s one of those moments that shows just how desperate he is to achieve power and to prove to Logan that he is the one who is suited to take over the company.
7 The Entire Republican Conclave
As shocking as Roman’s embrace of a white supremacist is, it’s matched by the entire Republican conclave, which is essentially a meeting of the powerful who get to decide who will be given the power of and blessing of the establishment.
It’s a shocking moment for how brazenly those gathered are willing to subvert the rules of democracy and instead place the power for deciding who the nominee will be in the hands of those who happen to have the most money or the most valued connections.
6 Kendall Confessing About His Manslaughter
Kendall’s accident–which resulted in the death of a young waiter–was one of the most shocking moments in season 1, and it cast a long shadow over his subsequent arcs. At long last, he admits what he did to his siblings in one of the rawest and most shocking moments in the season. It’s surprising for at least two reasons.
First, that Kendall would ever admit to weakness in front of Shiv and Roman of all people and, secondly, that they would both be remarkably supportive given this piece of valuable information.
5 Roman Agreeing To Join Shiv And Kendall
Given that Roman has always shown a peculiar unwillingness to cross his father in almost any regard, it comes as quite a surprise when he actually joins with Shiv and Kendall as they attempt to form one last coalition to bring down Logan.
It’s a sign that Roman is finally coming to terms with the ugly reality that, whatever he might wish and however he might fervently desire that his father will, at last, approve of him, it’s all going to end in the same way: with him being betrayed.
4 Logan Outmaneuvering His Children
From the moment he appeared, Logan Roy has been a powerful presence in the show, signifying that he will remain one of Brian Cox’s best roles. He has shown time and again that he is willing to destroy anyone who gets in his way.
Even so, his decision to not only cut his children out of the merger but essentially cast them out of his life is a powerful and enduringly shocking moment, showing once and for all that he is the type of person for whom loyalty, to him, is the only thing that matters and that he will destroy anyone who doesn’t show it.
3 Tom’s Ultimate Bargain With Greg
There are many sad things about Tom, but arguably his dysfunctional marriage with Shiv is one of those. In the final episode, he, at last, seems to form a partnership with Greg and Logan, and their triumvirate is what allows Logan to outwit his three children.
Even though Tom has many reasons to be bitter at Shiv (and the Roy family in general), his decision to join Logan of all people shows just how far he has fallen out of love with Shiv.
2 Kendall’s Art Installation
Most of season 3 was about Kendall’s efforts to solidify his individuality from his father, and in that regard, he had some mixed results, and his self-indulgent birthday party will surely go down as one of his less appealing moments.
In particular, his decision to have guests enter through a replica of his mother’s genitalia is pretty shocking even for Kendall, and it shows just how much his newfound social justice persona is nothing more than a facade.
1 Caroline’s Conversation With Shiv
Clearly, Harriet Walter is one of the best guest stars to appear on Succession, and she perfectly captures Caroline’s vexed relationship with her children, in particular Shiv. In a moment that is as shocking as it is surprisingly low-key, she actually has a heart-to-heart with her daughter.
It’s one of the few moments where she seems willing to let her guard down and really be honest with her child, something that few members of the Roy family have ever been able to do.
