Supernatural 5 Of the Worst Angels (And 5 Of the Best Demons)

The CW’s Supernatural has been on TV for over a decade and in that time it has built a rich mythology of beings, but none have been as popular and as widely used as the angels and demons. Traditionally, demons are thought of as entities of pure evil while angels are considered to the epitome of purity and good.

However, Supernatural has always challenged the very notions of good and bad. Throughout the show’s long run, there have been a variety of angels who were really not as good as they were meant to be, while there were demons who were actually not that bad. Here is a list of ten of them.

10 Angel: Raphael

Supernatural 5 Of the Worst Angels (And 5 Of the Best Demons)

Raphael is one of the four archangels in the show. Incredibly powerful, he was one of the most rigid and traditional of all the angels. Earlier in the show, he became disillusioned by God’s disappearance and became weary of his angelic duties.

As a result, Raphael was one of the strongest supporters of the Apocalypse and in season six, he even tried to restart it by freeing Michael and Lucifer. However, unlike those two, Raphael always had a lot more freedom to act against Heaven and become a powerful ally to the Winchesters. However, his cynicism made him unwilling to change.

9 Demon: Crowley

Supernatural 5 Of the Worst Angels (And 5 Of the Best Demons)

Crowley is one of the longest-running characters in the series. Unlike many of the other demons on the show, Crowley has a long and complicated history that explains why he was devious and self-interested. As a child, he was abandoned by his mother Rowena and as an adult, he formed a tenuous relationship with his son, Gavin.

Formerly, the King of the Crossroads, he both helped and betrayed the Winchesters multiple times throughout the series. However, in the end, he sticks with Team Free Will and sacrificed himself to save them and trap Lucifer in an alternate dimension.

8 Angel: Naomi

Supernatural 5 Of the Worst Angels (And 5 Of the Best Demons)

Naomi appears in the eighth season of Supernatural and at first, seemed like a new friend to the Winchesters after she rescues Castiel from Purgatory. However, Naomi only did it so that Castiel could spy on the brothers and get a hold of the angel tablet.

In order to get Castiel to betray the brothers, she tortured and took control of the angel by forcing him to kill hundreds of copies of Dean. When they eventually find the angel tablet, Castiel almost kills Dean by beating him to a pulp, just as Naomi had programmed him too.

7 Demon: Meg

Supernatural 5 Of the Worst Angels (And 5 Of the Best Demons)

Meg is the first important demon the brothers face all the way back in season one. At first an enemy of the Winchesters, she later formed a fragile alliance with the brothers in season six.

Importantly, Meg developed a strong relationship with Castiel. In season seven, she takes care of amnesia-riddled Castiel and helps the brothers to fight the Leviathans. In season eight, she further helps the Winchesters by sacrificing herself to Crowley, so that they could keep the angel tablet safe.

6 Angel: Uriel

Supernatural 5 Of the Worst Angels (And 5 Of the Best Demons)

Uriel is one of the first angels we meet in the series. Fairly unpleasant, it is clear from the beginning that he absolutely hates humans and even refers to Dean as a “mud monkey”.

Therefore, it is not at all surprising that he would double-cross Heaven and work with Lucifer, who also sees humanity as an abomination. Equally as ruthless, Uriel had no problem killing the former head of his garrison Anna in order to ensure his plans.

5 Demon: Ruby

Admittedly, Ruby is a very controversial choice to add to this list. She was responsible for befriending and tricking Sam into getting addicted to demon blood and causing him to unknowingly start the Apocalypse.

But, Ruby did a variety of things for the Winchesters that she not only didn’t need to, but that could have sabotaged her own plans. This included helping the boys to restore the Colt, giving them the Demon killing knife and helping them save the angel, Anna.

4 Angel: Gadreel

Supernatural 5 Of the Worst Angels (And 5 Of the Best Demons)

Gadreel is perhaps one of the most complex angels on the show. Once God’s most trusted angel, Gadreel was in charge of guarding the Garden of Eden, but was tricked by Lucifer and indirectly became responsible for the corruption of man.

Gadreel is imprisoned for thousands of years and with the fall of the angels, deceived Dean into letting him inhabit Sam in order to heal him. However, Gadreel started to work for Metatron and ends up killing Kevin Tran, using Sam’s body.

3 Demon: Cain

Supernatural 5 Of the Worst Angels (And 5 Of the Best Demons)

Everyone knows the story of how Cain killed his brother Able out of rage and jealousy. However, in the Supernatural universe, Cain was only trying to protect his brother and instead exchanged his soul to Lucifer, so that his brother could go to Heaven. After killing Able, Cain bore the Mark and becomes corrupted by it. He becomes the first Knight of Hell and one of Hell’s most feared demons.

As time passed, Cain fell in love with a human woman Colette, who made him promise that he would stop killing. However, through the other Knights of Hell, Cain accidentally killed Colette and in memory of her, decided not to kill anymore. Cain lived a peaceful and quiet life until the Winchesters showed up and forced him back into the life he swore to leave behind.

2 Angel: Metatron

Supernatural 5 Of the Worst Angels (And 5 Of the Best Demons)

There is probably no angel as hated as Metatron on the show. Personally chosen by God to be his scribe, he was in charge of recording the word of God. At first, Metatron seemed like a pretty harmless angel, albeit a little strange.

However, it soon became clear that he is a vengeful and power-hungry despot. In season eight, he tricked Castiel into helping him expel all the angels from Heaven and in season nine, he tried to become God himself. In the end, he gets locked in Heaven’s dungeon by the Winchesters, but not before killing Dean and causing him to turn into a Demon.

1 Demon: Demon Dean

In season ten, Dean spends the early part of the season as a demon and he very easily takes up this role. The Dean Winchester that everybody grew to love disappears and the new black-eyed Dean is violent, callus and has no problem killing humans, even Sam.

However, just like Cain, Dean was only corrupted by the mark and the real Dean still existed underneath the demon’s exterior. Eventually, Sam and Castiel were able to capture and cure him.
