Audiences love a good plot twist, and a movie can have a twist about anything. There have been plot twists about the identity of a narrator, the two lead characters being one person, and the entire story being a psychological experiment.

But a plot twist is particularly sinister when it tells the audience something shocking that they didn’t know about a villain they were already terrified of. Darth Vader’s “I am your father” reveal is obviously the pinnacle of the villain-based plot twist, but there are plenty of other great examples.

10 Mr. Glass Caused The Train Crash (Unbreakable)

10 Most Shocking Villain Plot Twists In Movie History

While the twist in The Sixth Sense doesn’t quite hold up on repeat viewings, the rug-pull at the end of M. Night Shyamalan’s follow-up movie Unbreakable is a classic Shyamalan twist. The plot revolves around a security guard played by Bruce Willis who discovers he has superhuman strength after surviving a train crash.

Throughout the movie, a comic book nerd played by Samuel L. Jackson – dubbed “Mr. Glass” due to his weak bones – takes an interest in David’s abilities. As it turns out, Mr. Glass deliberately caused the train crash (and various other deadly accidents across America) in search of a real-life superhero.

9 Amy Faked Her Kidnapping (Gone Girl)

10 Most Shocking Villain Plot Twists In Movie History

This twist was only shocking to moviegoers who didn’t read Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl before watching David Fincher’s adaptation of it, but the reveal is just as shocking in the movie (which was scripted by Flynn) as it is in the book.

Throughout the first half of Gone Girl, evidence starts to mount that Nick Dunne has an unseen dark side and he did something horrible to his missing wife Amy. As it turns out, that’s just what Amy wants everybody to think. She carefully orchestrated her own kidnapping and left a meticulous trail of breadcrumbs to distract the cops from the fact that she just ran away from her unhappy marriage.

8 Esther Is A 33-Year-Old Serial Killer (Orphan)

10 Most Shocking Villain Plot Twists In Movie History

At the beginning of Orphan, a couple grieving the loss of their child decide to adopt a nine-year-old girl, Esther, played by Isabelle Fuhrman. From the offset, it’s clear that something’s not quite right with Esther – but no one could’ve guessed the twist.

As it turns out, Esther is actually a 33-year-old serial killer using her rare hormonal disorder to pose as a little kid and prey on an unsuspecting family.

7 The Vulture Is Liz’s Dad (Spider-Man: Homecoming)

10 Most Shocking Villain Plot Twists In Movie History

Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Homecoming pulls off one of the most surprising twists in the MCU. The first couple of acts present Spidey’s pursuit of the Vulture and Peter Parker’s romantic interest in Liz as two entirely separate storylines. Then, around the turn of the third act, the opening of a door shockingly reveals the Vulture to be Liz’s dad.

At the end of the second act, Peter gives up his pursuit of the Vulture to enjoy life as a teenager. He asks Liz to the homecoming dance and excitedly walks up to her front door to pick her up, then his mortal enemy – who has no idea as of yet that he’s Spider-Man – opens the door. The scene plays off the tension beautifully, as Peter looks unbelievably uncomfortable as an arms dealer who tried to murder him innocently makes dad jokes.

6 The Corpse On The Floor Was Jigsaw All Along (Saw)

10 Most Shocking Villain Plot Twists In Movie History

In James Wan’s low-budget horror gem Saw, two strangers wake up chained to pipes in a dark, seemingly abandoned bathroom. There’s a corpse lying motionless between them – which is taken as a given – and they start trying to figure out who captured them and why they did it.

Toward the end of the movie, there’s a jaw-dropping moment that reveals the body between them to be the Jigsaw killer, the man who kidnapped them, alive and well. At the turn of the climax, he calmly rises to his feet.

5 John Doe Turns Himself In (Se7en)

10 Most Shocking Villain Plot Twists In Movie History

Another Fincher movie, Se7en is a grisly horror take on the “buddy cop” genre. Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt make up the classic pairing of a veteran detective on the verge of retirement and his hotshot new partner who’s excited about his first major case. The criminal they’re after is a serial killer inspired by the Seven Deadly Sins from the Bible.

In the middle of the movie, when “John Doe” is still a few murders away from the full seven, he shows up at the police station and turns himself in. This turns out to be a key point in his diabolical Biblical scheme, as Pitt, Pitt’s girlfriend, and Doe himself are planned to be the last three victims.

4 Rose’s Box Of Photos (Get Out)

10 Most Shocking Villain Plot Twists In Movie History

From the moment Chris arrives at his girlfriend’s parents’ gated community in Jordan Peele’s Get Out, it’s immediately clear that something sinister is at play. But, throughout the whole movie, it seems as though Rose is blissfully unaware of whatever sinister ulterior motives her parents have.

After Chris discovers a box of photos showing all the Black boyfriends (and one girlfriend) that Rose has lured into the community, it becomes apparent that Rose has been in on it from the beginning. When Chris is trying to leave, Rose’s attitude suddenly switches from panic and compassion to pure evil as she coldly tells him, “You know I can’t give you the keys, right, babe?”

3 There Never Was An Aaron (Primal Fear)

10 Most Shocking Villain Plot Twists In Movie History

Arguably the most iconic psychological plot twist delivered by Edward Norton is Fight Club’s revelation that Brad Pitt’s character is a figment of his imagination. But Norton delivered a similarly shocking psychological twist in his first-ever film appearance, Primal Fear.

He plays a kid accused of murder who claims to have a split personality between the innocent “Aaron” and the psychotic, murderous “Roy.” Richard Gere plays the attorney who tries to defend him and ultimately realizes he’s concocting the split personality. He asks, “There never was a Roy?” His client chillingly tells him, “There never was an Aaron.”

2 Norman Bates Is The Killer (Psycho)

10 Most Shocking Villain Plot Twists In Movie History

In the first half of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 thriller masterpiece Psycho, the audience is led to believe that Norman Bates’ mother is the murderer and that he’s just the mild-mannered son desperately covering up her crimes.

As it turns out, Norman himself is the killer. He’s been dressing up as his late mother to commit murders after merging her personality with his own to deal with the guilt of killing her out of Oedipal jealousy.

1 Darth Vader Is Luke Skywalker’s Father (The Empire Strikes Back)

This is arguably the most shocking and unexpected plot twist in movie history, and with the internet spoiling everything these days, it probably always will be. The original Star Wars movie introduced Luke Skywalker as a moisture farmer in the middle of nowhere and Darth Vader as the symbol of evil ruling the galaxy with an iron fist.

Then, in The Empire Strikes Back, Vader shockingly revealed that he was Luke’s long-lost biological father. This significantly raised the stakes of the trilogy’s conflict, adding a personal vendetta to the political one.
