10 Most Underrated Pokémon From The Kanto Region

The first generation introduced some Pokémon like Golbat and Dodrio that have faded from popularity over the years and deserve more attention.

Generation I introduced the world to 151 digital Pocket Monsters, each unique and capable of battling. While these original creatures are still some of the most famous, certain ones have drifted into the background as the Pokémon series has continued. While some people still play games based in the Kanto region, they often forget about certain creatures.
These Pokémon have their fans, but the general population seems to have moved on. The underrated creatures of the Kanto region deserve more recognition because of their incredible designs and impressive stats. Although it does not appear that any new Kanto games will come out soon, hopefully, more fans will come to appreciate some great Pokémon from Generation I.
10 Sandslash
Although it received a regional variant in Generation VII, Kantonian Sandslash has been pushed into the background over time. Its Ground typing allows it to deal super-effective damage to several types, but Ground cannot hit cute Pokémon Flying-types like Woobat under normal circumstances. Since Flying is a common type, Sandslash’s capabilities are limited.
Nevertheless, its great design and decent power make it a capable combatant on most occasions. While Alolan Sandslash’s dual-typing of Ice/Steel allows for many more resistances, making it potentially more viable, Kantonian Sandslash is also worthy of attention and deserves to be recognized more than it currently is.
9 Golbat
When Crobat was added in Generation II, people paid little attention to Golbat anymore. This is fairly reasonable because Crobat is one of the best evolutions added in a later generation, but its previous evolution deserves more respect.
It held its ground before Crobat entered the series, and while it was not groundbreaking, it was a more than decent choice if players needed to fill out a team. In addition, its design is both unnerving and incredibly interesting. While almost every person who has played a Pokémon game can likely recognize Golbat, it has drifted from favor as time has progressed and should be reconsidered by fans as a worthy addition to anyone’s team.
8 Venomoth
The Bug-type is infamous for being extremely weak, especially in Generation I. The cultural mascots of this type, the Butterfree and Beedrill lines, are unimpressive in a battling capacity.
Venomoth is much stronger, but it is much less famous. Perhaps this is due to its moth-like appearance, which many may consider neither cute like Butterfree nor intimidating like Beedrill. Venomoth helps to balance out the Bug-type a bit, though. It is not exceptionally powerful, but it can hold its own in a variety of matchups.
7 Primeape
Being a Fighting-type introduced in the same generation as Machamp is not a good sign for one’s popularity moving forward. Primeape, unfortunately, suffers this exact fate. It is not terrible by any means, but its battling capabilities are lackluster compared to the four-armed beast.
It should not be disregarded, as it can strike with powerful force, making it a reasonable choice for trainers seeking Fighting-types. It has received little attention since Generation I, and it is time that Primeape gets some deserved admiration.
6 Golduck
Golduck’s first evolutionary form, Psyduck, gained fame partially due to its prominent role in the Pokémon anime, becoming so popular that now, even non-fans of the franchise know it. Golduck, though, did not receive the same level of adoration.
While it is certainly not as quirky as Psyduck, Golduck deserves more attention than it receives. It is not meta-defining, but its stats are higher than some more popular Pokémon from Generation I. While its design is fairly simple, its sharp features help to make it much more intimidating. In certain matchups, Golduck can shine, but as time has gone on, it has become more irrelevant strength-wise.
5 Victreebel
The combination of the Grass and Poison typings is not uncommon in Generation I, with even the starter Bulbasaur having the Grass/Poison typing. Because of this, Victreebel and its previous evolutions blended in with the rest, not making their own significant mark. A member of its line has almost always appeared on Gym Leader Erika’s team, but this was not enough to solidify its place in the public consciousness as much as it should have. Its interesting design and decent power should have earned it more fame than it currently has today.
4 Dodrio
The three-headed bird Pokémon Dodrio was never incredibly well-known. It is recognizable, but few trainers have used one on a team consistently. It is a prominent creature in New Pokémon Snap, but in the main series, it is generally ignored. This may be partly because Doduo, its previous evolution, can only be found relatively late in the game.
At this point, many players have solidified teams with which they plan to finish the game. Dodrio’s unremarkable typing does not do it any favors either. Despite this, Dodrio has a great design and decent stats that warrant a second look from fans.
3 Dewgong
As the lead Pokémon for Elite Four member Lorelei, Dewgong has its place in Pokémon history. However, in the time since Generation I, it has received little additional treatment. Other Water and Ice dual-type Pokémon like Lapras took the spotlight, leaving Dewgong behind.
The seal-like Pokémon is not the strongest of its dual-typing, but it is a consistent pick for trainers who need a role to be filled. It has a simple design, but it is a lovable creature that should receive more support.
2 Tauros
Tauros has fairly good stats, but it suffers from the curse of the Normal-type. Tauros only gains a Same Type Attack Bonus with Normal-type moves, which are not super-effective against any type in the series.
This makes Tauros less viable and is perhaps why it is not as well-regarded as many other Pokémon from Generation I. Many people forgot Ash caught it in the anime, showing how far it has drifted from the public consciousness. Although there are drawbacks to its typing, Tauros has a great design that deserves more recognition than it gets. Hopefully, future games will give Tauros more attention and expand the creature’s abilities to make it more desirable for players.
1 Cloyster
Sporting the Water/Ice dual-typing like Dewgong, Cloyster also sits in the shadow of Lapras. It is more powerful than some more famous Pokémon, but it is not incredibly popular. Its stats are not incredible, but it can withstand certain attacks extremely well, making it a reliable pick in combat.
Similar to Dewgong, Cloyster is a consistent member of Lorelei’s team, along with Lapras. While the three Pokémon often accompany each other, it seems that only Lapras has gained extensive popularity. Due to its power and durability during battles, Cloyster deserves more love and attention from fans of the franchise.
