10 Best Survivor Seasons For Fans Who Like Cutthroat Strategy

Survivor is a game of strategy, and its 41 seasons have displayed both fierce and weak strategic gameplay. These are the strongest of them all.

People come to Survivor for different reasons, and it is this widespread enjoyability that has helped make it a runaway success for so long. Some viewers put emphasis on the beautiful locations. Some prefer fun characters and interesting arcs. Some come for the extravagant challenges. And many, of course, come for the cutthroat strategy and exciting storylines.

Survivor strategy has undeniably evolved throughout the years – so much so that the early seasons could be considered primitive and boring by comparison. It is now a cutthroat game, and at times, even a confusing one. If ferocious playing is what people are after, then these are the seasons that they should be watching.

Season 4: Marquesas

Marquesas is arguably when Survivor starts emphasizing strategy and gameplay over the survival aspects. Rob Mariano became a huge star thanks to his cutthroat style and he is now regarded as one of the show’s most notorious villains.

The Rotu Four was also an incredible alliance that managed to overthrow Boston Rob’s power. Finally, the Outsiders Alliance showcased some fantastic strategic gameplay by teaming up and Pagonging the Rotu Four after the merge. Survivor really came into its own with Marquesas.

Season 15: China

China was one of the most fun Survivor locations, and Survivor: China contained both a memorable cast and some solid gameplay. Winner Todd Herzog played an excellent game throughout, and he was helped by Amanda Kimmel and Courtney Yates.

Together, they managed to outsmart the other survivors and orchestrate some impressive moves, like eliminating Jean-Robert Bellande once he began scheming and blindsiding James Clement with his dual idols. China is one of the most impressive early seasons in terms of strategy.

Season 19: Samoa

Samoa is where “modern” Survivor began with its cutthroat gameplay and heavy emphasis on strategy. And that’s due to one man – Russell Hantz. Easily one of the most chaotic players ever, Hantz changed how Survivor was played.

He found hidden immunity idols without the help of clues, and he orchestrated the Pagonging of the Galu tribe. The post-merge section of Samoa is a masterclass in Survivor strategy, and the show would never be the same.

Season 20: Heroes Vs. Villains

Easily one of the best seasons of Survivor, Heroes vs. Villains contains a ton of great strategic gameplay – mostly on the part of the villains. Everyone on this season plays hard – even J.T. Thomas, whose infamous idol blunder came from an attempted “big move.”

Many of the season’s eliminations came through strategic mastery, including Tyson’s, Boston Rob’s, and J.T.’s, whose demise resulted from the greatest idol play in Survivor history.

Season 28: Cagayan

Heroes vs. Villains was considered the greatest Survivor season of all time – until Cagayan came along. Like Samoa and Russell Hantz, Cagayan is almost single-handedly run by eventual winner Tony Vlachos.

Tony is a masterful strategic and social player, with the incredible talent to blindside, backstab, and twist alliances into knots while also retaining strong personal relationships. Tony’s gameplay can be studied for all future Survivor players, as it may be one of the greatest games ever played.

Season 31: Cambodia

Cambodia is easily the most strategy-heavy season of Survivor. Consisting entirely of returning players, Cambodia is a relentless exercise in Survivor strategy, as everyone was appreciative of their second chance and came to play for the million dollars.

This season placed a heavy emphasis on “voting blocks,” and it made for exhilarating – and often confusing – viewing. Cambodia has the potential to tie viewers’ minds into knots, and at one point Jeff even has to break out a board and draw football-like diagrams to explain an elimination. Cambodia is for die-hard fans only.

Season 33: Millennials vs. Gen X

Airing as the 33rd season, Millennials vs. Gen X is one of the greatest modern seasons of Survivor. The entire cast plays hard, and the season contains a lot of great and imaginative gameplay that showcases the hearts of its players.

Adam Klein is a die-hard Survivor fan, and he plays like one. The season also contains the greatest fake immunity idol play in the history of Survivor, and the entire post-merge makes for exhilarating TV. Goofy theme aside, Millennials vs. Gen X is peak modern Survivor.

Season 37: David Vs. Goliath

David vs. Goliath is arguably the last “great” Survivor season. It is easily the best of the 30s, and it has earned consistent acclaim for its strong level of gameplay and unpredictable story. The season contains some of the show’s greatest and most shocking blindsides, showcasing a masterclass in playing both numbers and advantages.

Two of the season’s Tribal Councils have made for historic Survivor moments, and many players – notably Angelina Keeley – showcase their love for Survivor strategy. David vs. Goliath is the best that Survivor gets in terms of gameplay.

Season 38: Edge Of Extinction

Edge of Extinction completely ruined the momentum that David vs. Goliath had built, offering up one of the show’s worst seasons immediately after one of its best. While the Edge of Extinction twist was unanimously hated, it did offer some interesting strategy that helped flip the traditional Survivor narrative.

Chris Underwood displayed a very strong strategic and social game by integrating himself back into the game and going on to win. He not only played the Edge twist to perfection, but he also played a masterful social game by building bonds with the Edge jury. It’s not easy to pick up the game 20 days after leaving it, but Chris made it look easy.

Season 40: Winners At War

As its title suggests, Winners at War is composed entirely of past Survivor winners. It’s no surprise that literally everyone came to play. Like Cambodia, Winners at War is nearly all strategy. Players go out for complex and often confusing reasons, and the myriad advantages are played well.

There are also a ton of memorable moments, like Denise voting out Sandra with her own immunity idol through a brilliant 1-0 vote. Plus, Tony once again plays a masterful social game, and Natalie takes full advantage of the Edge of Extinction twist.
