10 Shows From ABCs TGIF That We Wish Were On Netflix

The 90s are where everybody wants to be right now. Whether you lived through it or not, this decade is all over the place. Its fashions are in style, its culinary delicacies are reappearing (we mean French Toast Crunch), and its television shows are just as popular as ever.

One huge part of the 1990s is ABC’s TGIF block. The Friday night fun is still talked about by fans and by those in the industry who created TGIF’s awesome programming. Some of the block’s shows are available for streaming, but others have been forgotten over time. Here are ten TGIF shows that we wish were on Netflix.

10 Full House

Full House is not hard to find. It is available on Hulu, and many devoted fans bought the DVD boxed sets years ago (which are still out there for purchase). However, there is one good reason why the show should be on Netflix: Fuller House is on Netflix.

The last installment of the reboot will arrive on June 2, and it would be nice if fans could go back and see the story from the very beginning, all in one place. Though they are subtle about it, the cast has hinted here and there that they’d like for this to happen, too.

9 Two of a Kind

Why not make it an Olsen twins party? No, the fashion moguls are not on Fuller House. But after Full House ended, Mary-Kate and Ashley didn’t stop.

They had a lot of years of acting left in them. Between all their direct-to-video entertainment, clothing designs, and dolls, the twins booked Two of a Kind in 1998. Though this sitcom only lasted for one season, it was a cute show, and it’d be fun to revisit it on Netflix.

8 Sister, Sister

While we’re on the subject of twins, fans everywhere are still wondering why Sister, Sister is not available to stream. It’s absurd that this hasn’t happened yet. The comedy of twins Tia and Tamera Mowry is truly special. Their characters are separated at birth and then get a chance to live together as teenagers, with Tia’s adoptive mom and Tamera’s adoptive dad working together to guide them.

The show has golden moments of physical comedy, but it can also address serious matters, like when the twins start searching for information on their birth parents. If only we could watch it again!

7 Boy Meets World

Well, there’s a clear reason why this one isn’t going to happen any time soon. Let’s take a brief look at Boy Meet’s World’s history. The show premiered on ABC in 1993 and was always a part of TGIF. Cast members have repeatedly explained that the show did not rise in popularity until new fans found it in syndication. The main networks people remember watching BMW reruns on are Disney Channel and ABC Family (which is now Freeform). As with the eight seasons of Full House, many avid fans went out and bought DVDs housing each of BMW’s seven seasons.

The beloved teen sitcom was on Hulu until Disney+ came to town. The new service took all episodes, most likely because the spin-off, Girl Meets World, is a Disney Channel show. Boy Meets World can still be purchased on Amazon Prime, but the show would add so much to Netflix and would then be available to fans who don’t have Disney+ or Prime.

6 Step by Step

While Step by Step is still on Hulu, it would be much more binge-able on Netflix. A basic Hulu subscription is ad-supported. While the cable generation is used to commercials on sitcoms, it is a treat to watch them uninterrupted. Step by Step would also be a different kind of show for Netflix.

The ’90s are so in right now, and this sitcom gives modern viewers a taste of what life was like for a blended family back then. Cast member Christine Lakin, who played Al Lambert, is often asked about the possibility of a reboot for this show. If it ever happens, maybe it could land on Netflix. It would be ideal for viewers to have both the old show and the reboot in one place.

5 Family Matters

Steve Urkel was in high demand in the 90s. The character appeared on both Full House and Step by Step. If both of these shows ever migrated over to Netflix, it would only make sense for Urkel’s own show, Family Matters, to be there with them.

All three shows are woven together by their memorable theme songs (thanks, Jesse Frederick and Bennett Salvay) and feel-good storylines. These Miller-Boyett shows would only make Netflix better.

4 Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place

This TGIF show had a bumpy road on ABC. It shifted in time slot and dropped in ratings, but it was on from 1998-2001, which isn’t a bad run. Its pizza premise vanished entirely in season three, and no one talks about the show much now.

If for no other reason, Netflix should want the sitcom because Ryan Reynolds is in it. Also, it was one of the first shows to utilize online voting in order for fans to decide the characters’ final outcomes.

3 Odd Man Out

Another obscure part of the programming block’s later days was Odd Man Out. Though it only made it through one season, the show uniquely featured a teenage boy living with his mother, aunt, and three sisters. Did we mention that the boy is Erik von Detten?

90s girls would love to see this on Netflix. The show is actually a good fit with its thirteen episodes. A number of Netflix originals last about as long, anyway.

2 Sabrina, the Teenage Witch

There’s another show in Hulu’s holdings that would be a good fit for Netflix. Sabrina, the Teenage Witch still has a huge fan base. Melissa Joan Hart played the world’s favorite teenage witch from 1996 to 2003. She loves having been a part of the show, and fans never get tired of talking about her fun times with Harvey, Libby, Salem, Aunt Hilda, Aunt Zelda, and if you want to go way back, Mr. Pool and Jenny.

Since Netflix has their original Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, it would be nice for fans of that show to see the original, much more lighthearted, story.

1 Just the Ten of Us

Just the Ten of Us was a spin-off of ABC’s Growing Pains. The new show began as a backdoor pilot on Growing Pains and then aired from 1988 to 1990.

It kept its Friday night slot when the network formally began TGIF in 1989. The show follows Mike and Carol Seaver’s gym teacher, Bill Kirchenbauer, as he moves his large Catholic family out to California. It would be pretty cool to have both Growing Pains and Just the Ten of Us on Netflix one of these days.
