Matilda, based on the book of the same name, is a classic ’90s film. There are some other movies worth seeing if you enjoyed that one.

Released in 1988, Matilda is one of the most charming and well-loved Roald Dahl books. It was able to entertain and inspire children and adults around the world, before being turned into a fantasy film for the ages in 1996. The excellent performance at the heart of the film came from Mara Wilson, but it was Danny DeVito’s direction, production, and co-starring role that really stood out. Alongside his then-wife, Rhea Perlman, as well as Pam Ferris and Embeth Davidtz, Matilda was a perfectly cast film.

With no sequel and no remake (yet), audiences simply have to sit back and hope to find another film like Matilda. That has been made a little bit easier thanks to this list of features that should stand out to fans.

10 Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban (2004)

The innocence of the two lead characters in Spy Kids overlaps hugely with the character of Matilda and the adventures she ends up in.

While Charlie Bucket’s parents are delightful, they live in squalor. The film tells the heart-warming and humorous story of Charlie and his family’s change of fortune, just like Matilda does in its brilliant story of Matilda and Miss Honey’s relationship.

7 Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Matilda’s power works kind of like the Force, right? She is able to harness her mind in a certain way which gives her control over the movement of objects she isn’t touching. She moves a water jug; Yoda moves an X-Wing.

It’s certainly a similar skill. The sci-fi of Star Wars doesn’t have a huge connection to Matilda, but for a fan of her powers, then the entire Star Wars franchise has something for an overlapping audience.

6 The Witches (1990)

One of the best big-screen adaptations of a Roald Dahl book came with 1990’s The Witches. It tells the story of Luke and a group of witches who are hell-bent on turning every child into a mouse.

The whimsical dark humor of Dahl’s story writing shines through here, while the elements of surrealism, magic, and fantasy are on display for all to see.

5 Stuart Little (1999)

While The Witches tells the story of people being turned into mice, Stuart Little is the story of an actual mouse. A talking one, in fact. He lives with the Little family (who couldn’t be more different from Matilda’s family) and the film follows his development as he learns how to fit into the human world.

There is a parallel between Matilda and Stuart, while Mrs. Little’s characterization is just like that of Miss Honey, and Stuart’s fake father has certain similarities to Harry Wormwood.

4 Home Alone (1990)

Kevin McAllister might not have ‘powers’ in the same way that Matilda does, but he certainly has a gift for something: he is able to analyze situations in such a way that he can predict the movements of people, while simultaneously having the incredible ability to construct devices well beyond the quality anyone else his age could achieve.

Their shared ability to find humor and fun in what are actually rather harrowing situations for a child makes for a clear connection between the two films.

3 Wonder (2017)

Wonder was a heart-warming and touching 2017 comedy-drama. It told the story of a boy called Auggie and his struggle to fit in while fighting Treacher Collins Syndrome (a genetic disorder that causes deformities in the ears, eyes, cheekbones, and chin).

His developing acceptance and the film’s generally uplifting nature has great links to Matilda.

2 James And The Giant Peach (1996)

The final Roald Dahl adaptation to make this list is James And The Giant Peach. The 1996 film is centered on a boy called James and… a giant peach. The surreal fantasy of the film came from the mind of Henry Selick, but the production of Tim Burton really adds a layer of madness to the combination of live-action and animation.

As with all Dahl stories, there is a distinct element of darkness combined with humor and warmth present throughout James And The Giant Peach.

1 One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975)

Finally, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest takes viewers all the way back to 1975 and one of the greatest films of all time. Technically, anyone who has seen Matilda would love this film just because it is so objectively good.

However, the specific attraction here comes from a young Danny DeVito. As he directed, produced, and co-starred in Matilda, it seems apt that one of his earliest and most hilarious roles should be featured on this list.
