The show Dexter premiered on Showtime in 2006 and ran for eight successful seasons. The first season of this series is based on a novel by an author named Jeff Lindsay called, “Darkly Dreaming Dexter”.
The rest of the series strays from the novel and centers around Dexter Morgan, a crime scene investigator, whose specialty is blood splatter. Dexter not only solves crime, but he commits them as well. Dexter is a murderer, but he uses his killer instinct to hurt bad criminals who have slipped through the cracks of the justice system. The series is available to binge entirely on Netflix, but in between episodes, there are a few similar movie titles worth checking out.
10 Prisoners (2013)
This 2013 thriller boasts an impressive ensemble cast with Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, Melissa Leo, and Paul Dano. The story focuses on two families, torn apart by the abduction of their daughters. The girls’ alleged abductor is taken into custody, but is then freed not long after, enraging both families. The father in one of those families decides to take matters into his own hands if the justice system can’t follow through.
9 Gone Girl (2014)
One of the best storytelling devices in Dexter is the way they use narration so that the audience not only sees everything from Dexter Morgan’s point of view, but they hear his thoughts, which makes rationalizing what he does even easier for viewers. David Fincher’s 2014 thriller, Gone Girl, uses that same formula. Amy’s story is told a lot through narration, making what she does to her husband Nick almost justifiable for anyone watching.
8 The Nice Guys (2016)
For a show that focuses so much on crime and murder, Dexter has some pretty funny moments. Dexter Morgan’s character is quirky and dry enough that sometimes seeing things from his point of view, is actually pretty funny.
For fans looking for a little more comedic relief after binge-watching too many episodes, the crime comedy, The Nice Guys, starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe should be next on the queue.
7 The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011)
This psychological crime thriller is another from David Fincher and based on a 2005 Swedish novel. It tells the story of Lisbeth Salander, a computer hacker, played by Rooney Mara, who teams up with a journalist, Mikael Blomkvist, played by Daniel Craig. Salander and Blomkvist are investigating the forty year-old disappearance of a woman from a wealthy family. This film has similar vigilante themes to Dexter and packs on the suspense in the same way as the hit series.
6 Memento (2000)
In this Christopher Nolan Neo-noir thriller, a man is in search of the people responsible for killing his wife. This man, Leonard Shelby, played by Guy Pierce, suffers from anterograde amnesia, which means he can’t form new memories, as well as short-term memory loss.
Leonard uses a series of Polaroids and tattoos to track his memories and thoughts in hopes of bringing his wife’s killers to justice himself.
5 Seven (1995)
This is another very suspenseful thriller from director David Fincher. This film follows Detective David Mills, played by Brad Pitt, who teams up with Detective William Somerset, played by Morgan Freeman, to hunt down a killers using the seven deadly sins in his murders. For fans who loved seeing the different serial killer storyline in every new season of Dexter, this film should be high on everyone’s watchlist.
4 The Silence Of The Lambs (1991)
This classic suspense movie gets into the mind of a serial killer the same way Dexter does. This film, starring Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lector, the crazed killer, and Jodie Foster as Clarice Sterling, the detective trying to figure him out in hopes of solving another active crime, is considered one of the most suspenseful and iconic psychological horror films ever.
Anthony Hopkins won an Academy Award for his performance in this movie, despite only having about twenty-six minutes of screen time.
3 El Camino (2019)
At the time of Dexter’s premiere and the success of the series that followed, audiences seemed to enjoy rooting for the “bad guy” because television was turning the cliche stereotype into someone more relatable and easier to understand. The series Breaking Bad gave audiences a different take on the crime world with Walter White, husband, father, and high school teacher turned meth dealer. For fans who love both Dexter and Breaking Bad, the movie El Camino, which is a follow up to AMC’s hit series is a must-see.
2 The Exorcism Of Emily Rose (2005)
Jennifer Carpenter played Deb, Dexter’s adoptive sister on the series for eight seasons. For fans who love Jennifer Carpenter’s work, people should check out The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Not only is this film terrifying, and supposedly based on a true story, but Carpenter’s work in it is really incredible considering what the actress must have had to tap into in order to portray a girl who has been possessed by the devil.
1 Mr. Brooks (2007)
This psychological thriller has a lot of similar elements to Dexter. The main character, Mr. Brooks, played by Kevin Costner seems to be a loving husband, father, and businessman, but harbors a dark secret because he is also a serial killer. Like Dexter, Mr. Brooks has an alter ego, who speaks to him often, only Mr. Brooks’ is a little more sinister. This alter ego, played by William Hurt encourages Mr. Brooks to give in to his killer instincts.
