10 Shows About Virus Outbreaks

The idea of a viral outbreak is a scary one and one that many television series have touched upon over the years. For some reason, in fact, 2014 and 2015 seemed to be banner years for shows following this theme, with several being released, many of which lasted for several seasons.

But there have also been some newer shows that follow a post-apocalyptic world where a virus has taken over. In some cases, people have become zombies and vampires. In others, survivors might fight to stay alive. While others, still, focus on weird conspiracies and secret government testing.

Whatever the direction they take, here are 10 shows that homed in on a main plotline surrounding a pandemic.

10 The Walking Dead

Arguably the most exciting and high-profile series about a viral outbreak is The Walking Dead. It’s certainly also the longest-running one, now in its 10th season with a successful spin-off, Fear the Walking Dead, and others to come.

At the center of this post-apocalyptic story is a mysterious virus that has caused people to turn into flesh-eating zombies. Apparently, everyone is infected and as soon as you die, you reanimate in search of dinnertime. The groups of survivors still don’t know what caused the virus nor how to stop it. But at least they’ve learned that a blow to the brain can kill the infected.

9 12 Monkeys

Adapted from the 1995 film of the same name, this Syfy series sees individuals get together to try and travel through time to stop an evil organization from proceeding with its plan to build the Army of the 12 Monkeys.

It lasted for four seasons from 2015 to 2018, as we followed the story of the scavengers and scientists trying to stop the release of the deadly virus that caused a plague and killed seven billion humans. As the virus continues to mutate, it threatens to eliminate the entire human race.

8 Containment

Also released in 2015, though it only lasted a single season, this limited series based on the Belgian TV series Cordon looked at an epidemic in Atlanta that quarantines a section of the city, leaving those inside to try and survive.

The virus begins with a Syrian man who then infects multiple people, including his own doctor and family. As the cordon sanitaire, as it’s called, is set up, authorities realize there are people outside of its walls who are also infected and continue to infect others.

7 Helix

This sci-fi horror drama aired for two seasons in 2014 and 2015 and told the story of a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) who travel to the Arctic in order to investigate a viral outbreak that could lead to potential disease.

While there, however, they get trapped in a situation that puts all of humankind at risk. Involving genetic engineering and a company that’s more concerned about their activities going public than a potential outbreak, it has all the makings for riveting TV.

6 The Strain

Airing on FX from 2014 to 2017 and lasting four seasons, there were high hopes for this series created by Guillermo del Toro and based on the novel series by Chuck Hogan. Another series that focuses on the CDC, this one looks at the organization’s head, who goes to investigate a suspicious airplane landing where everyone on board is dead.

They realize it’s a viral outbreak similar to an ancient strain of vampirism, and as the virus begins to spread, the doctor must work with his team to literally save the world.

5 Z Nation

Also created in 2014, this action-horror comedy-drama post-apocalyptic series is another one that touches on the idea of a plague of zombies. While the virus has killed most people, one man who received a placebo in a government experiment while in prison managed to survive.

Not only has he not turned into a zombie, but apparently his blood contains antibodies that could help develop a vaccine. As he tries to figure out a way to cure the disease, he is slowly mutating into a half human-half zombie creature that can mysteriously control the zombies. The series aired for five seasons.

4 ReGenesis

A Canadian series, this one aired for four seasons from 2004-2008 and was about scientists in the fictional North American Biotechnology Advisory Commission (NorBAC) that investigates scientific issues, from bioterrorism to mysterious diseases.

While it isn’t as far-fetched and fantastical as the others, it was a smart series that drew upon consultation from an actual molecular biologist and the director of the Structural Genomics Consortium, Aled Edwards. And the show was lauded for addressing some of the most topical social, political, and ethical issues relating to science at the time.

3 Survivors

As the name implies, this 2008 British sci-fi series is about a group of survivors following the spread of a strain of influenza known as the “European flu” that has wiped out almost everyone in the world. Not to be confused with the 1970s series of the same name, this series is actually loosely based on the Terry Nation novel that he wrote after that original show had aired.

The virus caused cytokine storms in the immune system yet somehow these few people have survived. And now without any society, police, or laws, they must start over and fight danger.

2 Between

A mysterious disease starts killing only those over the age of 22 in a small town called Pretty Lake in this short-lived Canadian series that was a co-production between Citytv and Netflix. Releasing two seasons back in 2015, the show focused on the survivors, mainly Millennials, who had to cope with loss and try to figure out what was causing the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the government has quarantined them, leaving questions about whether something else sinister was at play or if this virus really was an Act of God.

1 Pandemic: How to Prevent an Outbreak

Released this January, this Netflix docuseries includes interviews with people who work on the front lines to battle influenza and stop the next global outbreak. Episodes feature people like doctors in the U.S. and Asia, health care workers in the Congo fighting outbreaks of Ebola, scientists conducting testing on animals, and more.

The series also discusses controversial topics like vaccines and anti-vaxxers, religion, prayer, faith, and viral outbreaks around the world. There’s one season so far of six short episodes, making it a quick binge.
