Quentin Tarantino’s revisionist Western Django Unchained is still his highest-grossing film, according to Box Office Mojo – and not for nothing. It is stylish, daring, bloody, and violent (like any Tarantino film), and has amazing performances by Christoph Waltz, Jamie Foxx, and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Though it is universally considered to be an amazing Western, there are not many other films of this genre that have a similar “fun” atmosphere to it – and not all are just as bloody.

10 The Sisters Brothers (2018)

The Sisters Brothers is a black comedy Western starring Joaquin Phoenix, John C. Reilly, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Riz Ahmed. Though it was critically acclaimed and even won the Silver Lion for Best Direction at the Venice International Film Festival, it turned out to be a box office bomb.

The film is pretty good, actually. Set in the 1850s Oregon, it follows the infamous assassins known as the Sisters Brothers (played by Reilly and Phoenix) chasing a gold prospector and his ally (played by Gyllenhaal and Ahmed).

9 Bone Tomahawk (2015)

What sets Bone Tomahawk apart is that it is a Western and a horror film at the same time. Starring Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, and others, it was a commercial failure but still a critical success with multiple film festival award wins and nominations.

Set in the 1890s in the dying days of the old west, it follows an elderly small-town sheriff (played by Russell) and his posse on a mission to rescue two people abducted by a cannibalistic cave-dwelling clan.

8 Hostiles (2017)

Hostiles is one of the few films where the up-and-coming star Timothee Chalamet had a small role – but that isn’t its biggest achievement. Starring Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike, it is a revisionist Western based on the story of Donald E. Stewart.

Set in 1892, it follows the legendary Army Captain who had reluctantly agreed to escort a Cheyenne chief and his family through dangerous territory.

7 The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is not the Coen Brothers’ best film, but it’s an unusual and entertaining one. It premiered at the Venice International Film Festival winning the Golden Osella Award for Best Screenplay (and later got three nominations at the Academy Awards).

The film consists of six vignettes that take place on the American frontier with the cast consisting of Liam Neeson, James Franco, Brendan Gleeson, Tyne Daly, Harry Melling, Tim Blake Nelson, and others.

6 The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is arguably an underrated and forgotten Brad Pitt film with breathtaking cinematography and brilliant performances from Pitt, Casey Affleck, Sam Rockwell, Jeremy Renner, Zooey Deschanel, and others.

The story follows Robert Ford who has always idolized the renowned bandit leader Jesse James. Robert tries hard to join the outlaw’s gang but gradually becomes disillusioned and even resentful of the man.

5 True Grit (2010)

True Grit is another Coen Brothers film – but it got more attention than The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. Starring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Hailee Steinfield, and Josh Brolin, it was nominated for multiple awards and was a commercial and critical success.

Adapted from a novel of the same name, it follows a fourteen-year-old farm girl named Mattie Ross who hires a boozy and trigger-happy lawman to make him go after the outlaw who killed her father. The duo is accompanied by a Texas Ranger who had been tracking the outlaw earlier.

4 Hell or High Water (2016)

Hell or High Water premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and quickly went on to gain critical and commercial success as well as multiple nominations for various awards. It was even chosen by the American Film Institute as one of the ten best movies of the year.

The story follows two brothers (played by Chris Pine and Ben Foster) who rob several banks to save their family ranch. The duo is then pursued by two Texas Rangers (played by Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham).

3 3:10 to Yuma (2007)

Directed by James Mangold, 3:10 to Yuma stars Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, Peter Fonda, Ben Foster, Gretchen Mol, Logan Lerman, and others. It is a remake of the 1957 film of the same name which is an adaptation of a 1953 short story Three-Ten to Yuma.

The story follows an impoverished rancher who decides to take on a very dangerous job: take a famous outlaw to justice. To do this, he has to get the outlaw to the train station in time for the right train to pick him up – the one going to Yuma at 3:10.

2 The Revenant (2015)

The Revenant is by far one of the greatest survival film ever made. No wonder it finally earned Leonardo DiCaprio his Academy Award as well as the second Best Director Oscar for Alejandro G. Inarritu who became one of the three directors who have won in this category two years back-to-back.

The story is set in the 1820s and follows the frontiersman Hugh Glass who tries to survive after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by his own hunting team.

One thing that’s certain is that pretty much every Quentin Tarantino film is worth watching if you liked Django Unchained. Tarantino takes a genre and transforms it into a film of his own liking by using his famous dark humor, memorable characters, stunning visuals, and so much more.
