Love is love and there are many diverse and beautiful representations of the many different types of romance on TV. Here are a few of the best.

Relationships don’t come in one size fits all, so it’s refreshing to see some romances portrayed on television that aren’t afraid to show the wider spectrum of love, though there is still a long way to go when it comes to equal representation. The majority of mainstream media stories still tend to follow a set of rules or tropes, making the characters who have broken out of that mold have an even stronger impact on their audiences.

A large number of the many ways of expressing love were not socially accepted at one time or another, and some still are in many parts of the world, proving that these rules are meant to be broken. There’s no better time than Valentine’s Day to celebrate how all love is valid, all love is real and it all deserves to be celebrated.

10 Ryn, Maddie & Ben – Siren

Everything about this interspecies triad from Freeform’s Siren brings something fresh and exciting to the genre. Often, sirens are portrayed as devious females or clueless damsels, but Ryn is a caring but powerful leader. Instead of tricking a man into falling for her for nefarious purposes, she enters into a healthy, supportive relationship with an existing couple, Maddie and Ben.

There is no jealousy or focus on a central partner, instead, the three are equal and always there for each other, as well as open with their friends and family about their dynamic.

9 Jason & Janet – The Good Place

On the outside, Jason Mendoza and Janet from The Good Place may look like the “average couple,” but they couldn’t be further from traditional. Even though Jason is dead and trapped in the afterlife, he’s still human, which can’t be said for Janet.

Artificial beings like her aren’t supposed to be capable of falling in love, and a big-hearted goofball like Jason is the last person anyone would expect to end up helping her go against her design to get married.

8 Maze & Eve – Lucifer

Neither Mazikeen or Eve believe in restrictions when it comes to love in Lucifer. They each have no problems with physical intimacy and engage in various relationships with both men and women. But they are opposites when it comes to their origins. Eve breaks free of Heaven to come to Earth, while Maze was born and bred in Hell.

Despite the fact that everyone says demons have no soul, Maze falls in love with Eve on a deeper level, while Eve begins to finally be freed from the idea of having been designed for Adam.

7 Magnus & Alec – Shadowhunters

Fan favorites Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood, also known by their couple name Malec, are masters at breaking the rules. This couple from Shadowhunters defied their entire world order to be together. Traditionally, shadowhunters and warlocks hate each other, making it difficult for the two to be accepted by either community.

There’s also the added prejudice in their world that leads to Alec nearly being forced to marry a female shadowhunter, as well as the huge age difference between Magnus and Alec since Magnus isn’t mortal and has centuries on him. Despite all these obstacles, their bond only grows and the two get married, proving that love can conquer all.

6 Angel & Lil Papi – Pose

When Blanca takes in Angel and Lil Papi to become part of House Evangelista in Pose, the rules aren’t the same as they are for adoptive siblings, but they do call each other family. Entering into a relationship when they already live together has its risks, as demonstrated by the fallout of housemates Ricky and Damon, but they decide it’s worth it.

Even when her modeling agency rejects Angel for being a trans woman, Lil Papi doesn’t let the industry shut them out for not fitting the “status quo,” and the two continue to move forward as model and manager.

5 Oberyn & Ellaria – Game Of Thrones

Game of Thrones’ Westeros isn’t the first place to visit when looking for modern romance, but in the case of Oberyn Martell and Ellaria Sand, their philosophy on love is extremely progressive, especially compared to the rest of the fantasy world.

While other kingdoms are pushing ahead with arranged marriages and heteronormative relationships, Oberyn and Ellaria are inviting multiple partners into their bed and enjoying the company of men and women, along with each other. They reject the constraints of society in King’s Landing, choosing to ignore the remarks of anyone trying to force their narrow-minded view upon them.

4 Kat & Adena – The Bold Type

There is nothing “ordinary” about The Bold Type’s Kat Edison and Adena El-Amin, whether they’re apart or together. Though she’s had to overcome many obstacles as a Muslim lesbian woman from Iran, Adena has been out and proud for years when she meets Kat, who is still discovering her sexuality.

In order to help Kat discover more about herself, Adena encourages her to open up their relationship so Kat can have experiences with other women. While their relationship evolves, it remains impossible to fit into a box. But no matter what’s going on between them, they continue to support each other in their activism, never letting the world tell them who they are or what to think.

3 Elena & Syd – One Day At A Time

From the beginning, Elena Alvarez and Syd bond over being “different” from other people in One Day at a Time, especially in their love of cosplaying and activism. The two must navigate explaining Syd’s nonbinary pronouns to family and friends, along with finding a term that works for their situation when traditional words like “girlfriend” don’t work. They eventually settle on “Syd-nificant” Other.

Neither is willing to change themselves to fit the mold, even when that means being rejected, as is the case for Elena when she comes out to her father.

2 Arthie & Yolanda – GLOW

Being among the first female wrestlers make Arthie Premkumar and Yolanda Rivas rarities, especially in the 1980s. Their romantic relationship with each other in Netflix’s GLOW sets them apart even more, especially when Arthie refuses to conform to any labels that define her sexuality.

This is a controversial issue among fans, but many believe that Arthie is taking a modern stance in a time when doing so was rejected, even by those in the queer community. Yolanda using wrestling as a way to help Arthie become more comfortable with her own intimacy further displays their unique connection.

1 Villanelle & Eve – Killing Eve

There is nothing “normal” about Villanelle or her relationship with Eve Polastri on Killing Eve, by society’s normative standards, or when it comes to the “typical” relationship between an assassin and a special agent. The two meet while MI6 agent Eve is hunting down the assassin, and their relationship involves attempting to murder one another on several occasions.

All of the characters on the show are begging for them to end the toxic dynamic, and the world is literally against them as the government tries to stop the trail of bodies that follows in Villanelle’s wake, but the palpable chemistry between them keeps fans coming back for more.
