10 The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008)

Based on the popular book series by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi, The Spiderwick Chronicles centers on the Grace siblings – Mallory, twins Jared and Simon – who discover a field guide about fairies and goblins, detailing a fantastical world around their new home.

This family-friendly fantasy had the trademarks of a franchise starter. However, it works as a simple standalone adventure with an engaging atmosphere and fine performances from Freddie Highmore as both Grace twins. And it concludes with a showdown between the Graces and Nick Nolte’s goblin army.

9 Stardust (2007)

From the mind of Neil Gaiman comes this fantasy adventure about a young named Tristan (Charlie Cox) who finds a fallen star in the form of a woman named Yvaine (Claire Danes). Everybody else wants a hold of Yvaine, resulting in a swashbuckling adventure that both of them goes through.

Expect whimsy and wonder in this film that recalls the days of The Princess Bride, Willow and Labyrinth. And under Matthew Vaughn’s direction, he effectively brings Gaiman’s bright vision to life. The result is the seamless mix of fantasy subgenres.

8 Mune: Guardian of the Moon (2014)

Here is a peculiar one: Mune: Guardian of the Moon is a French 3D animated film about a fantasy world where two distinct realms, day and night, live in perfect harmony. But when a faun boy named Mune, the guardian of the moon, inadvertently left the Sun to be stolen, he sets off on an adventure with the guardian of the Sun before destruction.

Animated by On Animation Studios, this uniquely animated film boasts a whimsy color palette that mixes Luc Besson and Tim Burton.

7 Clash of the Titans (1981)

1981’s Clash of the Titans is notable for being the last film that stop-motion maestro Ray Harryhausen contributed to. This sword-and-sandals epic fantasy recounts the Greek myth of Perseus as he journeys to stop the Medusa and the Kraken to save the Princess Andromeda.

Based on the book The Little Broomstick, it tells the story of a girl named Mary Smith (Ruby Barnhill) who discovers the flower “fly-by-night,” which gives the abilities of a witch for only one night.

This anime film clearly takes inspiration from My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service when it comes to the story’s rich magical elements and childlike storytelling. For that, it becomes an adventure worth taking for anime first-timers and fantasy fans.

5 A Whisker Away (2020)

Still in the anime realm, A Whisker Away comes from Studio Colorido, the animation team behind the equally peculiar Penguin Highway. As indicated from the title, this is cat-themed fantasy about a girl named Miyo who finds a mask that turns her into a cat. She then uses this ability to gain the attention of her classmate Kento. But slowly, her reality and her life as a cat begin to blur.

Japan has a deep connection to cats. So, this film helps fantastically illustrate the connection between people and cats.

4 Christopher Robin (2018)

Christopher Robin is one of the few live-action Disney movies based on one of their own animated films but is not a direct remake. Instead, this continues the tale of Winnie the Pooh when Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor) is now a grown adult who rekindled his life’s passions when he gets reunited with his “silly little bear” best friend.

For fans of Winnie the Pooh, this is a real treat that respects A. A. Milne’s creation and faithfully recreates the characters as adorable plush toys. Overall, it is a feel-good fantasy drama.

3 The Little Prince (2015)

Based on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s classic, The Little Prince is the second feature-length adaptation of the book. Uniquely, the film instead focuses on a young girl (Mackenzie Foy) who encounters an old man (Jeff Bridges), who claims to have encountered the Little Prince, and rediscovers her sense of adventure.

This animated employs two animation mediums: one is computer animation with the girl’s arc, serving as the framing device for Little Prince, and the other is stop-motion to bring Saint-Exupéry’s iconic illustrations to life. The result is a heartfelt animated experience.

2 Hugo (2011)

It is strange that Martin Scorsese directed a 3D family film. However, he succeeded it perfectly with Hugo. Based on the Bryan Selznick book, Hugo is the tale of an orphan boy (Asa Butterfield) who lives within the walls of the Paris Gare Montparnasse railway station, only left with an automaton. But little did he know that the contraption stores great secrets.

This adventure film not only works as a delightful experience but also Scorsese’s love letter to silent films and cinema magic. And it deserves its traction as a fantasy film improved by 3D.

1 Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

Guillermo del Toro is now known as the honcho with an unabashed love for fantasy creatures. But so far, Pan’s Labyrinth is widely considered his best film to date. To the unfamiliar, this fantasy film tells the story of a girl named Ofelia (Ivana Baquero), who discovers a labyrinth guarded by a faun (Doug Jones), who assigns her tasks to save her family during 1944 Francoist Spain.

Del Toro approaches his tale like a bedtime story, but he never strays away from the darkness of his fantasy world and its historical backdrop. The result is a fantasy masterpiece.
