10 Of The Most Powerful 9th Level Spells In D&D

The magic capabilities can sometimes be immeasurable in D&D, but sometimes players can achieve powerful feats of magic. Within the world of D&D, there is a cap to the magic that mortals can achieve, and in turn, Players only have limited access to magic in D&D in the rules as written. The highest level of magic that any magic caster could achieve is the powerful 9th level spells.

Most Players rarely get a chance to use 9th level spells as it requires the magic caster to reach 17th level at the minimum. Nonetheless, when Players do reach that level of play in a high-level game, they will have access to formidable magical spells that could alter reality’s fabric if Players so choose.

10 Foresight- See Into The Immediate Future To Gain The Upperhand

10 Of The Most Powerful 9th Level Spells In D&D

The only 9th level divination spell, Foresight, takes about a minute to cast, but it lasts for 8 hours. The caster can either use it on themself or another ally. The target cannot be surprised, rolls advantage on everything, and anyone who attacks the target has the disadvantage.

This is the best way to ensure a specific character will not die when entering a climactic battle. Just having an advantage across the board is already useful. Everything else about this spell makes it all the more useful.

9 Storm Of Vengence- When The Druid Is Sick Of People Messing With Nature

10 Of The Most Powerful 9th Level Spells In D&D

This powerful spell that is only accessible to Druids and strangely lore bards, but that is a different discussion, is the culmination of all the destructive forces of nature. The Radius of this spell is 360ft and lasts for a full minute.

The Spell goes through several rounds, changing to different types of storms, starting with a deafening thunderstorm, then moving to acidic rain, lightning strikes, then hailstones, then ending with powerful winds with freezing rain. An intense spell that would challenge any Player.

8 True Polymorph- For Those Moments When Players Want To Turn Their Enemies Into Chairs

10 Of The Most Powerful 9th Level Spells In D&D

Polymorph comes in handy in many scenarios. Sometimes Players need to turn their enemies into frogs. Sometimes Players need to turn their allies into T-Rexes. Regardless the Ultimate version of this spell is True Polymorph.

Interestingly it is the only Polymorph that allows players to transform creatures into objects. It is a fun spell to use to either immobilize enemies or have a new advantage changing allies into powerful creatures.

7 Mass Heal- Can Help Turn The Tide In Any Battle

10 Of The Most Powerful 9th Level Spells In D&D

Perhaps the most useful healing spell in Dungeons and Dragons, Mass Heal allows the caster to restore up to 700 hit points to any creature within 60 feet. The spell also cures any diseases or effects that made the character blind or deaf.

It is a simple spell, and there is not much to it that alters reality, but being able to distribute 700 hit points is incredibly powerful. For a Standard party of 5, assuming they are all level 17, 700 hit points should be enough to heal everyone to max if they were all at 1 hit point.

6 Meteor Swarm- This Spell Would Be The Definition Of Overkill

10 Of The Most Powerful 9th Level Spells In D&D

When Players think of a powerful 9th level spell, this is likely one of the first to mind. Meteor Swarm is the strongest version of Fireball a Caster could achieve for all intents and purposes.

The spell has a range of 1 mile, a 40-foot radius sphere, and does a total of 20d6 fire damage and 20d6 bludgeoning damage to any creature, which fails the dexterity saving throw. All being described as massive meteors rain down on any creature caught in the blast radius.

5 Time Ravage- A Twisted And Evil Spell Created By Matt Mercer Of All People

10 Of The Most Powerful 9th Level Spells In D&D

Time Ravage appeared in the Explorer’s Guide To Wildemount as one of the two 9th level spells to appear. Just from the name alone implies this spell is not something to mess around with.

It essentially forces a creature to age in an instant rapidly. On a failed constitution save, the target takes 10d12 necrotic damage, ages to the point where they only have 30 days left to live. The target has a disadvantage on everything while in this state. With Limited was to reveres this effect, this makes the spell all the more devastating.

4 Time Stop- Need A Little Bit More Time With This

10 Of The Most Powerful 9th Level Spells In D&D

Potentially one of the more practical 9th levels spells, Time Stop does, as the name suggests, stops time. The Caster stops time for everyone except themself. From there that have roughly 1d4+1 turns in a row where they can act and move as normal.

It allows them to potentially have 5 full turns to perform any feats they want to do, provided they do not affect any other creature during this time. It may not seem that great, but this spell works best when combining with other spells such as Delayed Fireball. Using this spell in conjunction with other spells is where the true power lies.

3 Power Word Kill- Need Someone Dead In an Instant? Then This Is the Spell To Have

10 Of The Most Powerful 9th Level Spells In D&D

A popular spell among many villains, particularly liches, this spell is the be-all-end spell for most. It is simple but absolutely devastating. The spell has a range of 60 feet. The Caster points to a target, speaks a single word, and if the target has less than 100 hit points, they instantly die.

No saving throws, no death saving throws, full death. This spell is best used for the climactic end battles of the campaign, and being able to kill someone instantly would make the entire table gasp.

2 Imprisonment- Anything That Has A Duration Of “Until Dispelled” Is Fairly Powerful

10 Of The Most Powerful 9th Level Spells In D&D

A unique spell is likely used when needing to trap either the BBEG or an ancient evil. Regardless this spell is particularly great at making sure the target never leaves. The spell creates a magical restraint either through a large burial or massive chains restraining the target.

The Spell ends under a determined condition that has to be reasonable or come to pass. So theoretically, the spell could end if 100,000,000 sunsets occur or if the character’s true name is ever spoken allowed by the descendent of the royal family. The imagination of the caster only limits it at that point.

1 Wish- Anything The Player Could Ever Ask For But At A Heavey Cost

The most infamous 9th level spell in 5E. This spell alters reality to the whim of the caster. Need the governmental policies to change drastically? Use wish. Need the evil necromancer to never learned how to read? Use Wish. The spell is only limited to the Casters imagination.

However, there are many caveats to this spell. Firstly, the caster must be specific and as precise as possible as the DM could easily warp the meaning of the spell if they so choose. Secondly, the spell has a brutal effect on the caster, essentially immobilizing them for several days. Lastly, there is a 33% chance the spell may never work again, But when it works, oh man, does this spell work wonders.
