Magic the Gathering Finally Explained Just What [SPOILER] Looks Like

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Magic #1 by Jed MacKay, Ig Guara, Arianna Consonni of Arancia Studios, and Ed Dukeshire, on sale now.

The Magic: the Gathering Multiverse is one of fantastical realms and almost unbelievable planes. While most denizens of these worlds will only ever know their own, some are given the immense power that comes with being a Planeswalker. First and foremost is the titular ability to travel to these Planes with little more than a thought. Things aren’t as simple as simply appearing in one Plane after blipping out of existence on another, though. All who walk the Planes must traverse the space in between them, the Blind Eternities. Though they have long been one of the most important aspects of Magic: the Gathering lore, the Blind Eternities themselves have never really be glimpsed up close. At least, not until now.

Magic #1 opens on the Plane of Ravnica, a sprawling metropolis that is unto itself an entire world. Ravnica is a Plane with several delicate ecosystems, not the least of which is in regards to the political climate of Ravnica. Citizens of the Plane are almost all affiliated with one of the ten guilds that each lord over or scuttle under a particular aspect of Ravnican life. Not all of these guilds are equal, but they all have an important role to play, and as such they all have someone either very powerful or very smart in their highest office. Unfortunately, some unknown force has decided to sew chaos throughout the city by assassinating three guild leaders who all just so happen to be Planeswalkers. After realizing just what is happening, as well as what is at stake, the trio leave for somewhere a bit more private to discuss their shared situation. In doing so, fans have finally been given a chance to see the Blind Eternities for themselves.

Magic the Gathering Finally Explained Just What [SPOILER] Looks Like

Ral Zarek, the leader of the Izzet League, flies through the Blind Eternities with his eyes closed and his arms outstretched as a massive and intricate system of gears and valves shifts all around him. Lightning crackles while the ethereal machines turn through the void between realities, and Ral seems to find an almost eerie peace in passing through to the next Plane. It’s almost too fitting for a Planeswalker obsessed with mechanizing his magic to be a coincidence. In fact, it is, as the Blind Eternities are revealed to resemble something that each individual traveling through them is intimately familiar with.

For Kaya, the Ghost-Assassin in charge of the Orzhov Syndicate, the Blind Eternities are an afterlife of sorts for every being that has ever lost their life. Though Kaya has killed hundreds of both the living and dead, the idea that they might be at peace in the Blind Eternities brings her a somber sort of peace of her own.

Magic the Gathering Finally Explained Just What [SPOILER] Looks Like

The Blind Eternities aren’t always so chaotic, though, as evidenced by the version of them that Vraska journeys through. The queen of the Golgari Swarm simply finds herself walking through a marsh amongst high grasses and reeds, an unexpected calm for a former assassin herself. While it is possible that there exists a more definitive version of the Blind Eternities as experienced by the Eldrazi titans native to it, the idea that each Planeswalker discovers a version of the Blind Eternities unique unto their own experiences is quite possibly the best version of them that anyone could have asked for.
