Mortal Kombat enjoyed a strong opening weekend in various international markets.

According to Deadline, the video game film brought in $10.7 million from 17 markets and 4,596 screens. Russia led the weekend with a $6.1 million haul, $1 million larger than Warner Bros. other major release of the season Godzilla vs. Kong. The top five was rounded out by Saudi Arabia ($691K), UAE ($689K), Thailand ($574K) and Taiwan ($554K). The film will open in 12 additional regions next weekend, including Spain and Mexico.

Mortal Kombat is a part of the HBO Max same-day premiere lineup, and will debut in theaters and on the streaming service on April 23. Other films that have released this way include Wonder Woman 1984, The Little Things, Judas and the Black Messiah, Tom & Jerry and Godzilla vs. Kong. However, WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar recently stated that Warner Bros. would return to theatrical exclusives in 2022 for major blockbusters like The Batman.

Overall, the same-day premiere strategy has been a relative success for Warner Bros. While Wonder Woman 1984 was marred by critics, it doubled the amount of subscriber activations in Q4 2020 compared to Q3 2020 and was the most-watched streaming film of 2020. Tom & Jerry, meanwhile, has brought in close to $100 million worldwide. Finally, Godzilla vs. Kong has grossed over $350 million worldwide and led to strong engagement numbers on the streaming service.

The official synopsis for Mortal Kombat can be read below:

In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage — or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana — the immense power from within his soul — in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?

Directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan, Mortal Kombat stars Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Bridges, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han and Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi and Scorpion, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Matilda Kimber as Emily Young and Laura Brent as Allison Young.
