Often, an onscreen pairing has such good chemistry that Hollywood wants to immediately reteam them. Sometimes it’s for a sequel and other times they hope to carry over the success for a brand new movie altogether. In the past, some of these successful multiple movie on-screen pairings have been Jack Lemmon & Walter Matthau, Richard Pryor & Gene Wilder, and Humphrey Bogart & Lauren Bacall.

However, sometimes lightning doesn’t always strike twice as some re-pairings end up being poor attempts at recapturing the magic found the first time around. Here are ten successful onscreen pairings that weren’t so successful the second time around.

10 John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John – Two of a Kind (1983)

John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John became stars thanks to the classic musical Grease. They sat out the disastrous Grease 2 but reunited for the film, Two Of A Kind. Very different from Grease, Two of a Kind told the story of a failed inventor (Travolta) who robs a bank teller (Newton-John) and must reform so God doesn’t wipe out humanity.

The strange premise wasn’t a hit with critics nor audiences as the reviews were terrible and the movie flopped big time. Travolta and Newton-John never reteamed for a movie again.

9 Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone – Gangster Squad (2013)

Gangster Squad reteamed Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone after starring together in the hit Crazy, Stupid, Love. They were again cast as lovers in this fictionalized account of LAPD officers trying to take down notorious gangster, Mickey Cohen.

The film was a modest box office success but a commercial failure with many critics noting Stone was miscast as the femme fatale-type character. However, the pair would redeem themselves when they reteamed again for La La Land, which was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, and Stone won for best actress.

8 Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock – The Lake House (2006)

Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock both had breakthrough roles with 1994’s Speed, however, Reeves wisely opted out of making the much-maligned sequel, Speed 2: Cruise Control. Finally, in 2006, audiences got to see the pair reunited in the romantic drama, The Lake House.

The time travel premise has both characters staying at the title lake house at different points in time, yet are still able to correspond with each other. Unfortunately, The Lake House was a critical and commercial failure, nowhere near equalling Speed’s success.

7 Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence – Serena (2014)

After lighting up the screen together in Silver Linings Playbook, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence co-starred in the ensemble American Hustle before reteaming as a pair in Serena. Lawrence was cast first and recommended Cooper for her co-star. The movie is a period drama about newlyweds in 1930’s North Carolina.

However, Serena received a very limited release and performed very poorly with critics as it currently sits with a 16% Rotten Tomatoes score. Cooper briefly reteamed with Lawrence for the film Joy, but Serena is the only movie in which they co-star that David O. Russell didn’t direct.

6 Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson – MIB: International (2019)

Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson starred in the mega-hit Marvel sequel Thor: Ragnarok, and it’s since been regarded as one of Marvel’s best movies. The movie was a critical and commercial hit, with many critics and fans noting Hemsworth and Thompson’s great chemistry.

However, Hemsworth and Thompson failed to re-capture the magic on their next project together, Men In Black: International. A Men In Black sequel/reboot that failed commercially and critically. The production was full of behind-the-scenes drama with, allegedly, both actors bringing in their own individual writers to polish their dialogue. Hemsworth and Thompson briefly reunited in Avengers: Endgame and are set to star together again in the upcoming, Thor: For Love & Thunder.

5 Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson – The Internship (2013)

2005’s Wedding Crashers was a surprise hit and left audiences clamoring for another pairing of Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. Unfortunately, fans would have to wait until 2013’s The Internship, which is about two middle-aged friends who get an internship at Google.

However, the movie failed with many saying the re-teaming of Wilson and Vaughn came far too late after Wedding Crashers’ success. Upon its release, the popular Onion satirical website ran a story called “The Internship poised to be Biggest Comedy of 2005.”

4 John Travolta and Uma Thurman – Be Cool (2005)

After starring together in what many consider to be one of the greatest films of all time, Pulp Fiction, Uma Thurman and John Travolta finally reteamed for Be Cool. Be Cool was the sequel to Get Shorty. Unfortunately, it was far less acclaimed.

While the film failed to impress the critics and movie-goers, one highlight is audiences finally got to see Uma Thurman and John Travolta dance on screen together again, following their iconic Pulp Fiction dance scene. Ironically, F. Gary Gray directed this sequel-to-a-Barry Sonnenfeld-film, as he would do again with the failure Men In Black: International.

3 Robert De Niro and Al Pacino – Righteous Kill (2008)

Robert De Niro and Al Pacino famously starred in The Godfather Part II but shared no scenes together. So in 1995, it was a big deal that DeNiro and Pacino would finally share the screen in Heat. However, they mostly just have one big scene together. 2008’s Righteous Kill reteamed the pair, but this time they would have much more screentime together.

The result was a disaster as Righteous Kill failed to not only make waves at the box office, but critics deemed it nearly unwatchable. However, DeNiro and Pacino got another chance to reteam with 2019’s The Irishman. The Martin Scorcese film starred DeNiro and Pacino and many consider it a masterpiece.

2 Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito – Junior (1994)

The Ivan Reitman film, Twins, was an enormous box-office success, and because stars Schwarzenegger and Devito took a percentage of the gross instead of their normal salaries, it resulted in the biggest hit of their careers. The same can’t be said about their follow up, Junior, which reunited Devito, Schwarzenegger, and director Reitman.

The premise concerns Arnold as a research geneticist, who becomes pregnant after voluntarily agreeing to participate in a medical trial. The film was neither a critical nor commercial success and many consider it one of the worst movies ever made. However, despite the reviews, Schwarzenegger and co-star Emma Thompson received Golden Globe nominations for their roles.

1 Chris Farley and David Spade – Black Sheep (2006)

After having a surprise hit with 1995’s Tommy Boy, Paramount Pictures wanted to capitalize on its success and rush into production a follow-up film starring Chris Farley and David Spade. According to the book, The Chris Farley Show, the Black Sheep script was hastily written and delivered on the day before Farley could contractually get out of starring in it. By doing it, he was unable to star in The Cable Guy, and the role went to Jim Carrey for which he was paid $20 million.

The production was tumultuous and the movie was such a critical failure that noted film critic Gene Siskel walked out on it. Unfortunatley, Black Sheep would be Spade and Farley’s final onscreen pairing.
