10 Pokémon Evolutions That Dont Look Like The Right Type

The Pokémon franchise is full of interesting decisions form the designers, from the constantly shifting look of the unaging Ash to the Pokémon themselves. One issue many fans bring up is the distribution of typing.

To date, there are 18 types in the series, ranging from elemental, like fire, water, and grass, to conceptual, like dragon and fairy. With so many types to choose from, Game Freak and The Pokémon Company surely have had a few mistakes in handing out types. These are 10 Pokémon that don’t exactly it the type they have, whether that is because they need a second type or a complete change.

10 Golduck

10 Pokémon Evolutions That Dont Look Like The Right Type

Starting from its early days as a Psyduck, Golduck has never fit the aesthetic of a pure water type. While Golduck is based on a duck, it’s even in the name, several of its Pokédex entries mention that it has telekinetic or psychic powers.

Psyduck also has immense psychic power, despite being a solo water type. The part that really drives the psychic connection is in Golduck’s design. They have a gemstone laid on their forehead which lights up during attack, indicating psychic powers.

9 Granbull

10 Pokémon Evolutions That Dont Look Like The Right Type

Snubbull is a cute bulldog-like fairy type Pokémon. When it evolves, it turns into a tough and gruff looking larger bulldog but retains just the fairy type. As a note, this is post-Generation 6, when the Fairy type was introduced. The line was normal type before.

Granbull has the fairy quality of being pink, but nothing else. It may be a timid and shy Pokémon, but it has the look of a fighter, right on down to its cuffs.

8 Tyranitar

10 Pokémon Evolutions That Dont Look Like The Right Type

Larvitar and Pupitar go through levels 1 to level 55 as rock and ground types, they evolve into Tyranitar, a rock and dark type. As a fully evolved Pokémon, it is not unusual for a final evolution to change the secondary typing, however, no other pseudo legendary does this.

Rock type covers a lot of weaknesses, but ground type fits as the secondary typing way more than dark. It is likely that dark type was chosen due to its introduction in the same games Tyranitar was introduced.

7 Samurott

10 Pokémon Evolutions That Dont Look Like The Right Type

Samurott is the final evolution of the generation 5 water starter, Oshawott. While Tepig starts out as a solo fire type, it evolves into a fire and fighting beast, but Oshawott, a solo water type, evolves into a final form of solo water.

This line is based on the samurai. When people think of samurai, they think of the blade, namely the steel blade. This line fits a water and steel aesthetic closer than a solo water typing. They even wield seamitars, but don’t have a steel typing.

6 Wailord

10 Pokémon Evolutions That Dont Look Like The Right Type

Wailord is a solo water type, which doesn’t make sense given its design concept. Yes, whales are aquatic mammals through and through, but Wailord is not solely based on a whale. The design of Wailord incorporates a blimp structure, making it look like a Zeppelin.

Also of note, Wailord love to jump through the air, so much in fact that most of their Pokédex entries mention it. If Drifblim can be a flying type, then Wailord should be too.

5 Donphan

10 Pokémon Evolutions That Dont Look Like The Right Type

For a generation that introduced several two new types, Generation 2 seemingly focused more on dark than steel. Phanpy, the elephant Pokémon, was introduced along with its evolution Donphan, as a pure ground type Pokémon.

The issue here is that Donphan is specifically stated to be the “Armor Pokémon.” Fans could be shocked to learn that this armored elephant is nothing more than a ground type, just the same as Diglett, when it should have had steel typing as well.

4 Aurorus

10 Pokémon Evolutions That Dont Look Like The Right Type

This beautiful fossil Pokémon, which can only evolve at night, falls into the trap that all fossil Pokémon live in. It retains the rock typing. While the original few fossils made sense to be rock type, the designs outgrew the trend, with Aurorus being a shining example of why it doesn’t make sense as a rock type.

It is inspired by the auroras, which gives it its ice typing, but the crystals lining its body could be more indicative of an ice and psychic type or solo ice type. Rock just doesn’t fit this Pokémon at all.

3 Luxray

10 Pokémon Evolutions That Dont Look Like The Right Type

As soon as Luxray was announced there was speculation over its typing. While electric was confirmed, many believed that this brooding Pokémon would also take on the dark typing, given its design, color, and perceived personality. When it turned out to be a solo electric type, many were disappointed.

Luxray fits almost too well into the dark type group, with a similar design to creatures like Mightyena. Even Morpeko, the two-sided Pokémon, looks closer to being a pure electric type than Luxray does.

2 Charizard

10 Pokémon Evolutions That Dont Look Like The Right Type

Everyone knew that Charizard was going to make it onto this list. In many ways, Charizard embodies the fire and flying typing perfectly, but so does Talonflame, the fire bird. Charizard is based on a lizard, even being called Lizardon in Japanese.

In most mythologies, a flying lizard is identified as a dragon, which Charizard fully fits the looks of. In the Red, Blue, and Yellow games, psychic and dragon-type Pokémon had a distinct advantage, so it didn’t fit for this final evolution of a starter to be a dragon, but seven generations have passed where it could have been fixed, and not just by adding a Mega form.

1 Vigoroth/Slaking

Normal-type Pokémon receive a bad rap due to the belief that they are the basic typing. However, Whitney’s Miltank and Norman’s two Slakings have done a great job of negating this stereotype. While normal fits for Vigoroth and Slaking, the fighting type would just as easily fit.

Vigoroth, particularly, is filled with a fighting spirit. It is the number one barbarian of the Pokémon world, constantly raging and taking swings on anyone and anything in its way. It even could be the rival to Primeape, another fighting type Pokémon, but instead, it is normal.
