10 Things To Watch With The Main Cast Of The Pirates Of The Caribbean

Since 1967, folklore and mysticism surrounding the Pirates of the Caribbean theme has been around, thanks to Disneyland. Finally, in 2003, the idea came to the big screen, including some very popular names, and paving the way for others to begin their career. Since the release of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, there have been five movies and one short movie that has been successful and has continued to gain a fan base; but what about the main cast’s other acting roles?

The cast of the first movie is hard to replace, and before and after they gained stardom with the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, they’ve had other notable roles that have gained huge success in one way or another.

10 Johnny Depp: Edward Scissorhands

Jack Sparrow wouldn’t be the same if not for Johnny Depp’s acting chops and odd mannerisms. Johnny Depp has worn many hats throughout his career so far, but one of his most notable came out of the 1990s. Edward Scissorhands wasn’t his first role, but it has definitely been one of his most successful in his early acting days.

Johnny played an artificial man who wasn’t completely constructed prior to his creator’s passing; Edward is brought down to the normal world by an Avon lady and it’s there he discovers a world beyond his own. Even though Edward Scissorhands turned 30 in 2020, it’s still a classic that fans should see.

9 Orlando Bloom: The Outpost

Will Turner is the only child of “Bootstrap Bill” and is an excellent swordsman and blacksmith by trade; he’s a heroic man that falls in love with Elizabeth Swann.

Orlando Bloom has had quite the career so far, and one of his recent roles was CPT Ben Keating in The Outpost. Based on the 2012 novel, it focuses on the several outposts that were placed during the Afghanistan war, Camp Keating included. It’s there where Ben and his small team battle against the Taliban enemy, who are in their hundreds. The Outpost has been dubbed a “realistic war film” that gets the facts right with great acting.

Elizabeth Swann is the daughter of Governor Weatherby Swann and lives amongst the high ranking society types. Elizabeth has an adventurous spirit, though, and takes off to save her love and eventually become a pirate herself.

Keira stars as Joan Clarke, Alan Turing’s once-fiance, played by Benedict Cumberbatch. The Imitation Game is based on real events during World War II when English mathematical genius Alan Turing attempts to crack the German Enigma code. Keira Knightley is known for being a shoo-in for period dramas, and her role in The Imitation Game is ranked highly in that realm.

7 Geoffrey Rush: The King’s Speech

Hector Barbossa is among the legendary pirates in the Caribbean and the Pirate Lord of the Caspian Sea. Better known as Barbossa, he’s an evil character with a monkey on his shoulder, who is played perfectly by Geoffrey Rush. While Rush will be known for this iconic role, he’s also had other successful roles in his career, too.

Welcome, The King’s Speech. Geoffrey plays Lionel Logue, a man who helps King George VI, played by Colin Firth, with his speech before being crowned king. Any role that Geoffrey plays is excellent and has won several awards for his acting chops. In fact, The King’s Speech is among Geoffrey’s best movies to date.

6 Jonathan Pryce: The Two Popes

10 Things To Watch With The Main Cast Of The Pirates Of The Caribbean

Actor Jonathan Pryce plays Weatherby Swann, the Governor of Port Royal and a representative for the English Royal Navy. Weatherby is a likable character but is known as a push-over. His character is a pivotal part of the franchise, but Jonathan Pryce also has other notable roles as well.

Opposite Anthony Hopkins, Jonathan plays Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio/Pope Francis in The Two Popes. Anthony plays the conservative Pope, while Jonathan plays a more laid-back Pope; when they come together, they try to find common ground that is not only for the common good but for the future of the Catholic Church. The Two Popes have a lot of amazing moments throughout the movie, but there are some that stand-out amongst the rest.

5 Lee Arenberg: In The Gray

10 Things To Watch With The Main Cast Of The Pirates Of The Caribbean

Lee Arenberg plays one of the most recognizable characters in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie; Pintel. Pintel is a member of the pirate crew, most notably aboard the Black Pearl, under Barbossa and Jack Sparrow. Where Pintel is, his comrade, Ragetti, is there too. Pintel is crude, rough around the edges, but offer comedic relief at the right time. Lee was meant for that role, among others he’s excelled at, too.

In particular, Lee plays Silas in the movie In The Gray. It’s about an undercover narcotics officer whose professional and personal life intertwine, and whose partner is Silas, played by Lee Arenberg. The movie came out in 2012 and received rave reviews, which part of it probably has to do with Lee’s acting skills.

4 Mackenzie Crook: Tales From The Lodge

Another squirrely character in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is Pintel’s side-kick, Ragetti, played by Mackenzie Crook. He’s known as being a member of the pirate crew with a wooden eye, and a comedic flair. He’s a memorable character for his appearance and for Mackenzie’s portrayal of him.

Mackenzie’s other roles are mostly in the television show industry, but his portrayal as Joe in Tales from the Lodge is memorable, as well. When friends come together at a lodge in remembrance of a friend, they end up telling creepy stories to one another. They end up realizing they are in a scary story themselves. It’s a campy horror movie with laughs, scares, and a good storyline.

3 Jack Davenport: A United Kingdom

10 Things To Watch With The Main Cast Of The Pirates Of The Caribbean

Norrington is respected and decorated for his loyalty to the Royal Navy. He’s a man that has captured some of the evilest pirates and wishes to have Elizabeth Swann’s hand in marriage. He’s a menace in the movie but is just doing his job, despite it being against those he loves and respects. Played by Jack Davenport, it’s a notable role, if not a particularly well-liked character.

In 2016, director Amma Asante released A United Kingdom, in which Jack plays a character named Sir Alistair Canning, a British government rep based in South Africa. The movie is based on a true-life romance between two people, despite their families’ wishes. It’s touching, and the cast worked beautifully together.

2 Kevin McNally: Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre: King Lear

10 Things To Watch With The Main Cast Of The Pirates Of The Caribbean

Joshamee Gibbs, played by Kevin McNally, is a loyal First Mate to Captain Jack Sparrow. He always has a story to tell, with an adult beverage in hand. Joshamee is very skilled and has seen a lot and done a lot during his time as a pirate. Joshamee was an important character throughout the franchise, where Kevin truly became his character.

Kevin has played a lot of roles in the television show industry, but his most notable in the movie industry was broadcast live. Kevin plays Lear in Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, who divides his power to his three daughters, and suffers the consequences. Kevin nails the live performance and the re-telling of such an important story in theatre.

1 Zoe Saldana: Avatar

Zoe Saldana was barely getting started in her acting career when she played Anamaria in the first Pirates of the Caribbean film. Anamaria is a smuggler, who happens to be a woman, and went on many adventures with Jack Sparrow. She lent her beloved ship to Jack, even though he sank it. After getting over this with a few slaps to the face, she joined forces with them for the greater good.

Zoe’s role as Anamaria might get overlooked because she’s had so many iconic roles since. In particular, without even really playing herself, she voiced and did CGI-acting as Neytiri, the princess of the Omaticayla clan in James Cameron’s Avatar. If fans of Zoe’s haven’t seen her role in this blockbuster, they are missing out big time. Among her list of well-rated movies, Avatar is in her top 10.
