10 Pokémon With Contradictory Typing

Pokémon typings are based on different elements that are used to determine the effectiveness of moves in battles. There are currently 18 types, and while most dual-type Pokémon have typings that make sense, others have typings that contradict each other, such as Water and Electricity, Bug and Flying, or Fire and Ice.

As a result, a Pokémon’s weaknesses, resistances, and immunities may be positively or negatively affected. They might gain a weakness but lose an immunity, or gain lots of resistances and immunities without any drawbacks. While they might not make sense in the real world, the typings of these outliers show that anything is possible in the world of Pokémon.

10 Emolga Is An Electric/Flying-Type

The Sky Squirrel Pokémon Emolga is an Electric/Flying-type. Flying types are typically weak to Electric attacks because there’s no alternate path for the electricity to pass through when it hits them.

Emolga, however, is able to conduct electricity in its cheeks and disperse it while gliding. Its dual-typing means it is only weak to Rock and Ice, is immune to Ground, and resistant to Fighting, Flying, Bug, Steel, and Grass types.

9 Abomasnow Is A Grass/Ice-Type

10 Pokémon With Contradictory Typing

Grass and ice don’t typically go well together, as ice can cause severe damage to grass, but that doesn’t appear to be a problem for the dual Grass/Ice-Type Abomasnow.

Based on a snow-covered tree, Abomasnow’s typing doesn’t go in its favor, opening it up to a total of seven weaknesses, and the Frost Tree Pokémon doesn’t actually gain any resistances or immunities compared to if it were a pure Grass-type.

8 Grimmsnarl Is A Dark/Fairy-Type

10 Pokémon With Contradictory Typing

Dark-type Pokémon are usually dark-colored, intimidating, and sinister-looking. On the other hand, fairy types are often pastel-colored, cute, and elegant. These two contradictory types are married with Grimmsnarl, the Dark/Fairy-type.

The Bulk Up Pokémon’s typing makes it weak to Poison, Steel, and Fairy, which is strange considering it is half Fairy. Apart from the other members of its evolution family, Impidimp and Morgrem, no other Pokémon has the same typing.

7 Scyther Is A Bug/Flying-Type

10 Pokémon With Contradictory Typing

Bugs are weak to Flying-types because the latter can scout their prey from above before swooping down on them. Scyther doesn’t adhere to this, however, as the Mantis Pokémon is a dual Bug/Flying-Type.

Its typing leaves it vulnerable to Fire, Electric, Ice, Rock, and Flying, while its only immunity is to Ground. However, it does have resistances to Fighting, Grass, and fellow Bug types. Despite its typing, Scyther’s learnset consists mostly of Normal-type moves.

6 Volcanion Is A Fire/Water-Type

10 Pokémon With Contradictory Typing

The Mythical Pokémon Volcanion stores water in its body and expels it with the use of the two cannons on its back which, according to its Pokédex, can blow away a mountain.

Despite being part Fire-type, it is immune to Water, and yet it is weak to Electric attacks. Its typing also means the Steam Pokémon boasts five resistances: Bug, Steel, Fire, Fairy, and Ice, despite it being part Fire-type.

5 Lunala Is A Psychic/Ghost-Type

10 Pokémon With Contradictory Typing

Psychic-type Pokémon are weak to Ghost, and yet, Legendary Pokémon Lunala is a Psychic and Ghost-type. Its typing means it isn’t weak to Bug types, as it would be if it were a pure Psychic-type.

It has immunity against Normal and Fighting-types and is resistant to Poison and Psychic, even though it’s part Ghost. The only other Pokémon with this typing are Hoopa and Dark Wings Necrozma.

4 Magearna Is A Steel/Fairy-Type

10 Pokémon With Contradictory Typing

Steeliness is not often equated with the realm of fairies. One is hard and cold, while the other is soft and enchanting. The Mythical Pokémon Magearna breaks the mold, however, in that it is a Steel/Fairy-type.

It’s one of the more favorable type combinations, giving the Artificial Pokémon nine resistances and two immunities, being Poison and Dragon, while it is only weak to Ground and Fire. Magearna’s learnset is made up primarily of Steel-type moves.

3 Medicham Is A Fighting/Psychic-Type

10 Pokémon With Contradictory Typing

A trainer faced with a Fighting-type would be wise to use a Psychic-type Pokémon, a brain to combat the brawn. In the case of Medicham and its pre-evolved form Meditite, however, this would have little effect, as the Meditate Pokémon is a dual Fighting and Psychic-type.

Thanks to its typing, Medicham is weak to Flying, Ghost, and Fairy-types and is resistant to Fighting and Rock, while it doesn’t have a single immunity.

2 Lanturn Is A Water/Electric-Type

10 Pokémon With Contradictory Typing

Even someone who doesn’t know a great deal about science knows that water conducts electricity. It’s therefore quite surprising that there is a Water/Electric-type Pokémon, Lanturn. It may be part Electric-type, but its Water typing makes it weak to Grass, and yet it is damaged normally by Electric.

Despite looking more like a water-based creature than an electric one, the Light Pokémon has twice as many Electric moves as it does Water moves in its base learnset.

1 Galarian Darmanitan (Zen Mode) Is An Ice/Fire-Type

Zen Mode Galarian Darmanitan seems to defy logic with its Ice/Fire typing. Fire and ice existing within the same organism requires some suspension of disbelief, and there’s nothing in its Sword and Shield Pokédex to explain how it works.

At the start of battle or at the end of a turn, if the HP of a Standard Mode Darmanitan with the Zen Mode Ability is less than half, it will transform into Zen Mode. Of course, Darmanitan’s type advantages and disadvantages vary depending on what form it takes.
